This Non-Euclidean Game Will Destroy Your Brain! - Hyperbolica

Ойындар

Hyperbolica First Look - a unique game by codeparade. What if we lived in a world that behaved nothing like our own? In non-Euclidean hyperbolic space, squares don't have 4 right angles, parallel lines don't stay the same distance apart, and the circumference of a circle is no longer pi times the diameter. This may turn your brain into soup.

    the puzzle at 3:47 involves a property called "holonomy", it's the property of space that involves "creating rotation" through normal movement, follow the path of a five sided square and you'll find yourself rotated a full 90°, even though no percieved rotation is experienced. this effect is present in both hyperbolic and spherical geometries edit: yes, I said five sided square, those exist in hyperbolic geometry (5-90° angles), and three sided squares can exist in spherical geometry

This is something like (and probably *is)* the Poincare model for hyperbolic space, a projection of hyperbolic space into a Euclidean space (so that we can actually view it) which renders infinite distance away as appearing a finite distance away, displaying the universe as this sort of disk around you.

    @alansmithee419

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@virtuallyreal5849 If you project a sphere onto a plane the North pole will be projected infinitely far away, but that has literally nothing to do with spherical geometry. There is no plane in spherical geometry, I honestly have no idea what you're talking about. "Beyond the north pole" is an entirely reasonable place to go. The Earth is a pretty solid representation of 2D spherical geometry - does it take you infinite time to walk to the north pole? Can you cross it? The answers are the same in spherical geometry. You can walk past the North pole as many times as you like, and you can come back to the north pole just by continuing to walk in a straight line from there - and if you keep walking you can cross the North pole in the same direction as many times as you like. The world loops back on itself. I'm fully aware Euclidean and hyperbolic spaces are infinite. What I'm saying is that that disk that *appears* finitely far away due to a projection of hyperbolic space into Euclidean space is actually infinitely far away. I'm not using some obscure mathematical definition of "infinity," I mean it entirely literally. If you want to travel to that edge you can't, because it's infinitely far away. Hyperrogue uses the same projection.

  • @virtuallyreal5849

    The north pole is the apparent center point of this a spherical plane. It is always up away from the plane which appears to wrap around it. Yes, hyperbolic space does appear finite because of the projection, but there is plenty of stuff past it.

    Hyperbolic geometry is essentially the opposite of spherical geometry. In regular geometry like we’re used to, a square is made of 4 right angles and parallel lines never meet. In spherical geometry, a “square” has 3 right angles and parallel lines curve together, you can see these concepts by drawing on a globe. In hyperbolic geometry, a “square” is made up of 5 right angles and parallel likes curve away from each other. Just giving some background on hyperbolic geometry.

    This game itself can be used as a torture device if you pair it with a VR headset. Still frickin cool.

    The major death of the game is its pricetag. At $15 which is almost as much as Outer wilds (a 15 - 20 hour story exploration game) i just can't see any reason to buy it. Well i actually bought it, but after 30 minutes refunded it because i saw almost everything there was. at $5 this would be a no-brain buy for me, but not $15 i'm sorry.

    Cereal is just one if those things i munch on. With less messy cereal it’s a lot like chips, and you can just snack on it dry from the bowl as you work.

    Here's an amazing fact. A square grid in the Euclidean world is actually built of pentagons in the non Euclidean space. The same with hexagons. A honeycomb would be made of hexagons in Euclidean space but heptagons in a non Euclidean space. Once more any polygon with a certain amount of verticies and sides will have the number of verticies and sides increase by one in non Euclidean space. π won't equal 3.14 in non Euclidean space And the perception of reality itself will become majorly distorted.
