The public domain thing is only for the Steamboat Willie film and the characters in it. "Mickey Mouse" is under trademark which never expires and they have copyrights on each individual version of Mickey Mouse through out the years. It's going to be impossible to use Mickey Mouse legally for a very long time maybe forever if Disney does some legal/lobbying shenanigans.

The Trademark can be revoked if Misleaning or Abused by the Owner so like if Disney start acting Their Trademark as if is a New Copyright that is Incorrect and can get You to lose Your Trademark

This really supports the argument that art style and art direction is way better than realistic graphics. Most games that try for high end realism will look outdated in a few years. But games that have a unique style like Windwaker, Cup head, or this, will almost be timeless

Bless this dev. They put out a very alpha looking design a while back and thankfully the community only gave praise and very well thought out constructive feedback. Really cool to see how much its improved.

All they had to do is wait like a few months and Mickey Mouse (from Steamboat Willie) is public domain.

Don't get me wrong. I love a good cinematic trailer. But you know the game has potential when it let's the gameplay speak for itself.

It’s an OG Doom/wolfenstien shooter with an old timey cartoon skin. Looks good.

A really neat art style. Hope they work more death animations into it. All the headshots looked identical

I always thought that games should go into that anime/cartoony direction because its easier for tech to handle and its just beautiful.

The consumers dictate the market. Cash grabs keep getting made because they keep making money. When people stop supporting bad practices, the bad practices will stop. Stop buying/playing EA, Ubisoft, Bethesda, Blizzard, Epic, ect. Stop giving them money and it'll change.

An actual gameplay trailer is awesome to see, this looks pretty cool.

I love how devs mocked Disney and Mickey in this, they freaking deserve this so much, i hope lawyers don't do shit with this, we need it. Cuphead devs probably proud that more people dig this style.

One of my favorite single player games I’ve ever played is Bioshock infinite and this game gives me some nostalgic vibes in that regard, would love to try this out when I can get my hands on it

This looks really cool, but I wonder how long it lasts. It's mostly the artstyle that's selling it, but with most of these games I get used to that after an hour of playing and it starts to feel less special. And I'll be honest: judging on the trailer the game doesn't seem to offer a lot of interesting things besidest the artstyle and thematic. I don't know. This feels like a game that will be incredibly fun to play for 1 hour and then gets boring really quick.

It kinda comes with the territory. There's an argument to be made that old-school FPS games should worry more about pacing, but at the same time, their relentlessness is what makes them fun for people like me.

Someine been working on this for a while and waiting for public domain to happen before announcing it.

I actually saw the original trailer when it first launched, and i must say, its a good combo, seiing how the 1st disney shorts(where the artstyle is based off), were made in the great depression

Im all for these old school style theme games like Cup Head and Bindy and the Ink Machine.

Back in the day, Doom Clone used to be a knock against other FPS games, but these days that sentiment is "HELL YEAH A NEW DOOM CLONE" and with good reason with games this crazy.

i’m kinda surprised something like this hasn’t been made before

bit of a nitpick here but I hope they give lots of attention to the environment, as it currently looks kinda uninteresting. They should take inspiration in games like Hi-Fi Rush or even Cuphead has this too where the environment also has a lot of life brought into it through animation.

This looks AMAZING. First game in years that's actually jaw-dropping.

Looks awesome, to me it seems to take some light inspiration from bioshock or is that just me?

The 3D realistic environments are completely out of place with the 30s style hand drawn assets and characters. Were they in sync, would've been much better.

Imagine a fallout game in this style. They already have the cartoon visual from mobile game and other supporting material.

The gameplay remind me of Doom and Cryptic Passage (Blood) by monolith especially the TNT. This could be a really good game. But again if Disney isnt petty, and it plays as good as the trailer shown.

Needs more death animations but cool.

IMO if the art style is going for retro, the portrayal of violence should match. Like in the old cartoons.

It will be public domain unless the higher ups of a specific origin at Disney bends the laws to do otherwise. What prevents them from taking it down during development? There's plenty of fan games that have been killed in the development stages despite being complete reworks.

There is a Film Theory about pooh entering the public domain. It's super interesting the loop holes that exist that allow them to continue some of rights to mickey.

1:02 You can't copyright a whole style of animation. It ain't just Disney who's being doing animation back then, Fleischer Studios was also doing a lot of stuff like that. It's like wanting to shut someone down for doing "CalArts" style of character design. Cuphead didn't get take down. And so what it's a mouse? Mouse is a common animal and this mouse is clearly some noire violence affair. It doesn't matter if Mickey's copyright expires or anything (which they'll just revew), this would never hold in court.

Perfect example of why art direction is superior to Graphics. This looks amazing without being some 4K cinematic bs.

Granted its not super gorey i wish the violence was more slap stick like it's inspiration. Cartoon characters back then would just walk away from gunshots with literal holes in their bodies, get crushed then wobble away flat as a pancake, things like that i would rather see.
