You have to agree that it dilutes the original movies. the original Star Wars Trilogy is more or less the same movie it was after the special editions were released in the 90s, but it doesn't carry as much weight anymore because the story and characters have been diluted by additional exposure in the sequels and prequels.

I miss Christopher a lot. He was an incredible steward of his father’s work. The second Christopher passed away Gollum the game and the Amazon show

@@digiquo8143 Because in general its a good adaptation of the book. However Jackson being forced into 3 movies instead of 2 created this weird... well mess. Imagine spending all this time polishing 2 movies and sticking to the book, instead of adding fan fic bits just to streach the material. More time = Better CGI or actually creating costumes/makeup that would look more real. Throw out legolas, Throw out the gandalf and necromancer story, throw out the Romance story and you will get book accurate story with actually good cast. Martin Freeman and all the Dwarf actors were really amazing. Too much CGI and fan fic just diminished their greatness.

If I remember correctly there was a fan film with the same title made about 10 years ago, the story features Aragorn and Gandalf as far as I know which could mean the return of the cast of the older movies, at least partially. This might be interesting considering the same producers are also on board.

Interesting that you say this. Tolkien didn't believe LotR could ever be motion pictured, so he sold the film rights to his books for near more than a song. He was horrified when he found out the Beatles wanted to obtain the rights as he loathed their to him facile and insipid music. Yet in time Peter and Weta pulled the six books (+ appendices) off, and made history. I oft wonder what Tolkien might have thought of these films (once he would have gotten over himself with the changes the team made to make these into motion pictures. I think he might have ended up more grudgingly pleased with it all than not so).

Just because he acted as Gollum over two decades ago, and we loved it, doesn't mean he won't do the present day politics bullshit. They tried to cancel Henry Cavill for defending the Witcher. Who's to say Serkis won't give in to the pressure? NOT making it an identity politics shitfest is a death sentence in Hollywood. The fact alone that they're contriving a reason to milk Lord of the Rings some more by making a movie about Gollum that nobody asked for is a huge red flag.

The naturality and grit of the original trilogy is ingrained in most peoples perceptions of LOTR, and I honestly don't think that can be replicated in modern movies, so it's probably just going to feel off, like the feeling you got watching the Hobbit

Part of why it felt off was because of how they filmed it. A significant portion of the original films took place on location with no sets, while most of The Hobbit took place on sound stages, where they had to oversaturate the set pieces so it would appear correctly in their new 3D cameras they had for the film. Likewise the originals had hundreds of extras, while in The Hobbit trilogy they skipped the extras and had a bunch of CGI guys cut and paste everybody (and not very well either, my least favorite CGI moment in those movies wasn't Smaug or the Goblins or even the whole Battle of 5 Armies, it was the one scene where Azog calls his armies to battle and his horn guy puts his face up to the horn and just stands there in an I-pose...no animation, no nothing, just "guess I'm here now")

The Hobbit was the only movie where I saw people falling asleep in the theater and getting up and walking out then asking for a refund. In all my life that is literally the only movie where I've seen that happen. The Hobbit head horrible CGI that looked super fake it had a boring story it dragged on forever and there was no action so people kept falling asleep and getting bored

Honestly, re watching the hobbit movies and not comparing them to lotr but other movies, it was a pleasure to watch, especially considering the impossible task Peter had. The Hobbit was the first real book I ever read. My teacher was concerned that it was too long, but I did it :).

I hope it's based on the Gollum game.

Ridley Scott and the Alien prequel films. It's old man ego issues. Thinking they still have the same creative spark they had decades ago. They've been famous and respected for so long, they think they can return to what made them famous and make the same type of film. When really, when they made those films that made them famous, they were doing their best to make it into the industry. They had drive and passion, and wanted to see something new that other directors weren't doing.

"If enough freedom is given to them" - That is exactly the problem... I'm not optimistic that studio execs will be able to resist the urge to meddle, which never ends well

Editor is an absolute Gigachad for this. I love Andy Serkis, he's an incredible actor and I'm sure he's gonna be amazing.

Gandalf was the one that started the search for gollum after hearing Bilbo's story (something simply didn't add up) and Aragorn (to my knowledge) was the only one that helped him. So yeah. It might be a cool story of Bros travelling across peaceful Middle-Earth. As it really took them like 16-17 years to find him.

Also what do you mean ”not be allowed to make good lotr movie” there is a lot of good stories they can do. We have angmar wars which to be honest is basically like games of thrones of kingdom of arnor huge civil war and political intrigue. But bigger threat in the north which later actually wins and destroys the whole kingdom and hundred of thousands of people dies in genocide and huge plague by the evils. Then we have the great war of orcs and dwarfs. Which we saw few minutes of in the first hobbit movie. The kin-strife, the civil war of gondor when it was at it’s greatest height and biggest territory, between black numenorians and the ”normal humans/numenorians” Basically house of the dragon xd

I wish they’d make a movie where Ancalagon the black is the main villain. For those who don’t know, Ancalagon the black was the largest dragon in middle earth history (to my knowledge). Smaug was apparently among the last and the smallest of the dragons. I believe Ancalagon was as large as a mountain and when he was defeated and struck down from the skies his body created a mountain range on impact.

Lets not pretend modern western film making isn't absolutely infested with overly educated activists and you only have to see the last LotR TV show popularity to see how well that worked out.

Based editor! That because said, The Hobbit was at least one movie too long with a bunch of non-canon parts! With such logic, LOTR should have nine parts! Asmon should understand how Gollum is equally important as Frodo or Aragon! Yes, Eru did "push" him, but he was indispensable to get Frodo to Mt. Doom, and when Frodo finally succumbs to the ring, it's his desperation and obsession that makes it possible to find and bite off Frodo's finger with the ring on! Not to mention, he found and keeps the ring hidden for centuries! All beings said I doubt I'll be watching because it will most likely be a bastardisation of Tolkien's work, the same as the ring of power! We'll see, but my expectations are low
