This Model Almost Broke Me - SPz Puma (RFM 1/35)
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
My friends, the Schutzenpanzer Puma is probably the most advanced IFV in the world right now. Rye Field Model has released a beautiful kit of this armored vehicle, and Voyager Model has two nice sets of photo-etched details for it. Although I didn't even know this vehicle existed before I saw the box-art, I was captivated by it. Little did I know it would become a very difficult project!

Holy moly, a modern build. This is gonna be awesome
A small correcton: Puma passed its combat readiness test with the Puma VJTF/S1 "upgrade" in 2020/2021. The cameras are thermal imagers and color cameras, the problem in the initial production Pumas (first batch) is, that highly durable, heat and frost resistant (mil spec) flat touch screens with high resolution were not availible (not developed yet) at the start of production, so they took black and white screens wich were availible. The screens are replaced on the VJTF/S1 upgrade with color screens.
Cool to see you do such a modern vehicle. It's not really true that it's in the prototype phase, there are actually about 350 in service right now but like many new vehicles they have some teething issues that still need to be resolved.

Yeah they entered service in 2009-2010
Just watched the first minute and allready feel the need to put some things in the right light. 1. Puma is not an APC (battlefield taxi like the M113 or MTLB) but an IFV. 2. It's not a prototype anymore. Germany has the first lots in active service. There are constant upgrades to make them fit NATO standards (Puma VJTF) and constant technical problems but this comes as troops are using them regularly.

Pretty fair to miss those, Puma's are fairly low in number for active service (so far, that's changing right now), and Martin's a historical modeler so the nuance of what makes an APC an APC versus an IFV is a bit far gone from the tigers and T-34s that is the usual fair. Isn't even truly something that is gotten right more often than it's gotten wrong, tbqh.

@@JJ-M No offence. just wanted to put this a little more in the right direction. But again a little correction in term s of numbers. As of now 350 of them have been delivered. Given the size of the Bundeswehr now, this is neither just a low number nor insignifiant. Also this is not changing atm, as you pointed out. A second batch of 50 Pumas was initially ordered but the order was halted, when some problems occured which in hindsight have shown to be largely caused by soldiers not being qualified enough to handle equiment as suffisticated as the Puma.

@@cupcakewrx3476 My apologies, a bit used to seeing the US force structure numbers in modern terms, and, ah, must have missed the halting of the order, happens. Appreciate the correction though! Don't want to leave anyone with incorrect impressions of it, even if it's relatively unlikely.

@@JJ-M you have to consider that the US military is vastly larger than the Bundeswehr. Just the Army is double the size of the whole german armed forces. This is due to the CFE Treaty (Conventional Forces in Europe) wich drasticly limited heavy weapon stocks of european armed forces (like upper limits for NATO MBT Fleets etc) but also due to the extra paragraph in the 2+4 Treaty (german reunificaton) for wich the british and polish governments pushed, wich limits the total size of the german military to 370k Men including reservists from 1994 onwards. Both treaties crippled german defense capabilities and reduced it from the second largest NATO Military behind the USA in 1991 (with several hundret thousand men more than the next largest ones - possibly up to 750k active serving soldiers) to a below average european military in 1998.
7:50 I found the best diy antislip for myself. all you need is a matte varnish and... going to a pet store)) volcanic sand for chinchillas has a very fine fraction and adheres perfectly to the matte varnish. apply the varnish with a brush and sprinkle the sand. the excess is perfectly cleaned with the lacquer thinner
Wow I live about ten minutes drive from Michigan Toy Soldier! Love that store, glad you are supporting them!
Oh my, I think I just saw the inspiration photos on Google, if it's what I suspect this will be amazing work... With quite unexpected textures! Beautiful build so far.
just worked a 12 hour shift. drinking a cold beer, and enjoying night shift is the best part of my day so far. even with the headaches you suffered, i appreciate you uncle nightshift. thank you for your steady uploads and quality content. loving your new style of video uploads!!! best wishes!!!
I'm telling you, 'ASMR modeling sounds'...easy money. Great build btw!
I'm here for the "my mechanic" shout out. Extra points for him being German on this German build.
When I stepped out of my Gunpla comfort zone, my first tank model was a King Tiger and I have to say that the running gear was my favorite part of the build
I’m calling it, he’s building a Puma in urban camouflage with pallets strapped to it
It's a good sign that your passion is still in the game, as it were
"The Puma almost broke me" - German MoD. (And it is now actually in active Service, btw, Around 350 have been delivered)
Uncle Night Shift, those rubber mats (from 1;50 min) are actually tiny metal bars to prevent penetration of the main armor from shaped charges from cluster bombs. They may have a rubber mat underneath, but the protruding bars are metal. The same armor is on the Panzehaubize 2000. One more thing, Puma is in active service of the Bundeswehr in the total number of about 350 units. And it is constantly being upgraded, it's like Panzer 4 and it's versions, ausf A, B, C and so on. You can say, that Puma is something like ausf B, or Mk 2. I hope I helped. :)

Protruding bars are rubber, pad underneath is some composite.
No way we got a modern tonk lets go!!
that sand texture was chef kiss, thanks for showing us
Hello dear modeller friend, I love your builds, and I learn a lot from each of your videos. Save your eyes, they are important, no model company will provide you with a white cane or a guide dog. I've been building models since 1980 and still going Congratulations again, and thank you for your videos. Happy modelling enjoy always 😊
Really looking forward to what you do with it! I've build the RFM Puma myself, without the fancy Photoetch parts. And I love how it turned out.
I didn’t know we would get a little ASMR, though I’m pleased with it and the model.
i once saw a picture of a puma with an "urban camoflage", it has a lot of pallets attached to it sides and it looked great! from the things you said in the video i have the assumption that you made exactly that. i am right?
Nice work 👍
Glad to see you again! Looking forward to the next part!
Thank you , Uncle Martin . 🐺 Loupis Canis .
An amazing build, as usual. Beautiful!
20:38 most definitely a good thing! Feeling like a kid regularly is quite healthy.

I’m so glad you posted today. Hope you’re well ❤
I always wanted to build this kit. Thank you very much for showcase ❤
Very excited to see a super modern model now :) Can’t wait to see the painting and weathering
I love your humourous kind of story-telling. Please go ahead with it! 🤜🏼🤛🏼🤝🏽
I think that all modelers, no matter the age, still have a kid in them. And that's not a bad thing at all.
I always enjoy it when you step out of the box. 😀 I'm looking forward to seeing how you progress 👍
Can almost feel that nonskid! Looking awesome.
well done. Way beyond my skill level. Thanks for the ideas and thanks for sharing.
lovely work Martin, the PUMA is really beutiful too
Beautiful job as always Uncle. Awesome kitchen too, btw.
"Tell me you watched the Task and Purpose video on the Puma without telling me you did"
Wow, an ultramodern model, yet another large step outside your comfort zone. What’s next, a submarine? 😊 Seriously, the amount of surface detail is quite amazing. I mean, yeah, it’s basically a brick, but it has details at so many different size levels that it almost looks like a 3D fractal. I’m reminded of the first few Bolo stories that I read when they were first published (yes, I’m old). Based on what I knew of tanks (from building models) in those days I imagined Bolos as gigantic simple smooth slabs of iodine colored alloy with tubular Hellbores sticking out, with no particular surface detail. Now I realize that they would have to be covered in various functional greeblies just like the Puma is. So if it’s okay with you, I’m going to pretend that the kit actually represents an early experimental Mark of Bolo.
Watching this again to get ready for part two
Amazing work, so far! 🍷
That slat armour is insane. All the best for You! ;)
The photo etch looks amazing
Thank you.
I really like the punctuation of seeing you talk about what you're doing or whatever in the middle of the build. It breaks things up nicely and we get to see your pretty face and those dreamy eyes.
Looks like a beast. Lovely work as usual Uncle. Can't wait to see the painting. Interested to see how you're going to paint behind that slat armour.
Perfect model i love your models a your perfect modeling and ideas you have my respect
Made my holiday even better Definitely going to be my next model
Te quedo inctrible, felicitaciones, esos fotograbados...de verlos me da un dolor de dedos...de nuevo increible trabajo
Great change of pace, nice seeing something different! Going to be fun, painting and weathering (not weathering?). Excited to see it completed. 👍
It's always a good day when Uncle shows up with a new video 🤘
Thank you Martin Uncle Nightshift!
I have been waiting for too long for you to build a modern vehicle. It is super exciting.
the amount of PE on that would make me blow my brains out, thats a nightmare for me
I have this kit in my stash and have yet to tackle it... a little intimidated to be honest; but you have now put some of my apprehensions to rest with your build. Anxiously awaiting your next video!
You looked at this nightmare and thought “that would be relaxing “😂. Nice work, nice video.
I’ve even more respect after watching the complexity of the kit. It looks incredible in paint….
Omg that looks so freaking awesome!! Makes me want to return to model building. Must've been 20 years ago
I love modern armor, I’m currently preparing to do a 1/48 Tamiya m1 abrams and I’m so pumped. Love the videos keep it up
Good subject choice.
Impressive photoetched work. Only word, you are a master. Thanks for your videos.

Bending is super easy, if you got some kind of bending tool. Soldering is pretty easy too: fix the piece together (clamps, tape, etc), pre-heat the PE for about 3 seconds, add the solder and move it along the seam with the iron. Should flow perfectly on your second or third try, then you'll have figured it out.

@@fonesrphunny7242 Thanks, for the tips.
Superb video! As a beginner, I've never seen metal parts that are also soldered. Looking forward to the next installment :-)
I haven't built a model in 20+ years. Since I have been watching your videos, I now have a large stock pile of WW2 models and I cant wait to get at it.
Amazing again !!!!!!!!!
Greetings Night Shift, that looks to be a bit likeca space age night, ready to go into battle, looking forward to the next installment, bext regards from Australia 👍👍👍👍
Going strong!
Very nice video! I have the same problem as you with constructors showing up at my house more or less at random. I feel your frustration. Your kitchen looks very nice though!
Good job on the pe. I started building 1/16 and hate working with smaller pe pieces… I can only image the complexity of this, especially on this scale. You’re a better man than I haha
