Rust Bucket - Tank Restoration Diorama

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

My friends, this is the most unexpected, least planned, and almost the biggest diorama I've ever done so far. Considering how it was made in very limited conditions and under a tight time schedule, I'm quite surprised it didn't turn into a total disaster!

What I like about your modeling is that you constantly modify and improve your techniques. I think you should dabble with aviation modeling and see what techniques you can learn from it that would apply to your armour models. I recommend starting with Mig-15 kit.

Welder here! If you want to do industrial technology such as breaks, metal shapers, etc, make sure to keep some black (very think and light) on it, because when in shops and outside, the metal shavings/rust/grime stays on there, and clumps up. In our shop, the welders have so much clumped up metal, it stays on there. keep up the good work!!

Here's some advice for weld beads: I've noticed that a lot of the time with your models, the weld beads are perfectly continuous even around corners. Yes I know you want weld around corners, in fact I am a welder myself. But depending on the type of welding they used, which was most likely stick, they wouldn't have rounded a corner like that. So, maybe try separating the bead at the corner?

LOVE IT... One thing... In the real world, oxygen and acetylene tanks are ALWAYS stored and chained in an upright position for safety reasons. The one laying on it's side is driving me crazy! [No worries] The Cork Concrete is ideal and I will use this technique. Now am thinking about additional ways to use cork including the thicker chunkier stuff. Thank You my Friend.

Still my favorite part is the warehouse. I’m still blown away by that. Especially the roofing sheets. We use the same galvanized steel sheets for roofing and fencing here in Barbados and the weathering you have done is spot on. Well worth the wait on this diorama

This inspired me to put a concrete slab or brick walkway in the diorama I'm doing as a commission. The client bought some HO/ 1:87 scale nudists from a NOHC and Preiser and wants a nude beach scene. I have some warlord 13mm/1:144 scale epic Chateaus that translate pretty nicely into HO scale beach houses and a 1:72 scale WW2 Russian NCO that could make a fitting generic European/Mediterranean police officer of some sort. The Beach houses are the backdrop on the 1'x1' slab of 2" foam, covering the entire backdrop. around 1/3 of the foreground will be water emanating from the front left corner. The middle 1/3-1/4 will be sand including a volleyball net [will use tight nit fishnet stockings for the net I think] and possibly a brick retaining/privacy wall with a walkway of this style concrete.

It’s great! If you want to add to it - add a couple of big blocks of wood between the wheels, nobody wants 60 tons running away when you’re working in it. Also tanks attract a lot of dust underneath and on the lower tracks when they sit for a while outside, and it tends to fall down when you’re working on them and get blown under the wheels, and into the crevices on the lower tracks. Spanners, hammers, oil cans, tools etc. tend to get put on every surface that will take them, particularly the mudguards and in gaps/valleys where they won’t get knocked as easily, as climbing up and down from the tank is a pain in the bum, but if you drop something into the depths you may not see it again for months/years. You’ll have boxes to hold any nuts and bolts you take off and try to organise / not lose the small things. We’d add steps or tie on a couple of ladders with rope to get up and down (metal on metal isn’t a good friction surface, so ladders slip). The one thing that you got wrong is the towing eyes, which are bloomin heavy and hang down, not up. That’s not a biggie though. I really like it.

Speaking of concrete slabs: Soviet PAG-14 airfield plates! I've been thinking of a 3D printed mold for air drying clay, and a jig that lets me cut the diamond pattern easily. If you want to play with heavy damage, the rods inside the concrete are woven, which would be a pretty awesome detail. All the necessary drawings are easily available online, since the slabs are still sold today. Such a 'background' could contrast extremely well with a more colorful aircraft. One of my favorites has always been the Ukrainian Su-27 "splinter" camo. Such a beautiful pattern, and blue is just an awesome color. Alternatively, some abandoned Mil helicopter, similar to the VW Beetle. Sticking to the Stalker vibe, maybe an Mi-24RKhR. I've found the Zvezda kit to be a good basis, but I'm still working on that. Just some more food for thought ;)
