Dolly has lived this song. She has made a ton of money, but she has given back by giving away millions of books to children and creating businesses in Appalachia where she grew up. As she has said, her outsides may be artificial, but her heart is 100% real.

Billy, don't ever let the negatives pull you down. This is one old geezer who has nothing but respect for anybody willing to sample, and enjoy, such a range of stuff as you do, and not just stick to a narrow, safe view of what others tell you that you're supposed to like. Keep it up, and let the haters spew. They aren't worth your thought, let alone your time.

I am one of your “OG’s”. I was brought up with the message in this song. And I raised my kids the same way. Even back in the 90’s & early 2000’s, people complimented me on how my kids were/are with others. I am trying to get my granddaughter along those same ways of thinking & manners.

Back when these songs were sung, we could not hear them every day either - either the song might play on your radio that day, or you went to the store and brought a record. But now, people can just hear any music at all with just a click! So don't lose hope!

I like your commentary on the songs' message, and Dolly Parton knows what poverty is. The financial kind, certainly not her soul; she's remained true to the core values she was raised on. Billy, I think it's one of the reasons more Black artists are drawn to it: the dearth of positivity in todays' music scene. Good choice.

The old man is jesu. I'll post the lyrics..! So nobody will keep at me trying to say different.. ? Well, I met an old man walkin' down the street His clothes were torn and tattered With sandals on his feet And I stopped to help him And lend him a hand He said, I love you so much But you must understand Silver and gold might buy you a home But things of this world They won't last you long And time has a way of turning us old And time can't be bought back with silver and gold And he said to me, let's rest for awhile For I have some good news to share with you, child He said, you can't change this old world The people need to know That a dear savior died here A long, long time ago Silver and gold might buy you a home But things of this world They won't last you long And time has a way of turning us old And time can't be bought back with silver and gold His eyes shown like diamonds And his smile was heaven sent His hair was long and flowing And his back was slightly bent And I knew he knew it For that day I changed As I watched him walk on I forgot to get his name He said, silver and gold can't buy you a home When this life has ended And your time is gone But you can live in a world where You'll never grow old And things can't be bought there with silver and gold And time can't be bought back with silver and gold
