Dolly is telling the story of the apostle Peter. She's a great storyteller. She helps you to imagine the embarrassment and shame Peter must have felt after he denied knowing Jesus three different times. Coming face to face with Jesus again and then knowing you are forgiven by a simple look and simple gesture: Wow. Could it be that easy for all of us? What a powerful song.

But....Peter DIDN'T see Jesus be crucified and die. Only JOHN stood at the cross with the Mary's. That's Biblical.

This is told from the view of Peter, the one who denied even knowing Jesus THREE times. Peter was disgusted with himself, for being a coward, and talks about what it was like for him to see Jesus again after failing him. We know Peter as an apostle, one of the first and most devout believers, but this song shows even someone like him can doubt and regret and then be redeemed by the amazing grace of Jesus.

Same for me with the chills. I put this song on repeat. Can't listen to it just once, 5 or 6 times in a row. Dolly singing HE'S ALIVE fills my heart & soul. TKS God for BLESSING Dolly! Now try "Down From Dover", "Me & Little Andy", "The Bargin Store" & "Coat of Many Colors" Dolly has so many. Also listen to Loretta Lynn, Patsy Cline, Tammy Wynette, Lynn Anderson, Donna Fargo, Barbara Mandrell & there are many other great Ladies of Country Music....like Christy Lane "One Day At A Time". Ok, I'll shut up now.

I remember watching this on tv back in the 90s. I think it was at a country music awards show. Big shout-out to Christ Church choir for singing also. They sang in the Oh Brother Where Art Thou movie at the baptism in the woods scene.

She's so incredible that not only could I visualize it, I visualized it through my own eyes as if I were Peter. As though I were seeing and feeling what Peter was seeing and feeling. I appreciate Dolly telling this from Peter's viewpoint, bc I identify more with Peter's wretchedness than John's righteousness, and I would bet, most of the rest of you do too. I'm actually thankful Peter denied Christ that day, bc, if he hadn't, if all those disciples had been like John, then I wouldn't be so thoroughly convinced that Jesus could also forgive the wretched person I know is me.

Great reaction to a WONDERFUL song!! The first time I ever heard this song was shortly after Dolly had first performed it, but I hadn't even known about it at that time. I was up late on Christmas Eve, baking pies while the Johnny Carson Show was playing on the TV in the living room, and Dolly was on that night, to sing this song. So it was just background noise for me, but as the song progressed, it just rooted me in place, and I turned to the TV to listen to the whole song. It gave me chills from head to foot, and I broke down sobbing, by the end of it, the song is just so beautiful, so moving1 It really personalizes Peter's and the other apostles' heartbreaking experience, losing Jesus in such a horrifying way, and then being reunited with him again!

I was in college when this song was originally recorded by Don Francisco who wrote it. Very popular in early 80’s.

I feel it every time I hear it! Still, after all these years this is my fav of Dolly's -- well, maybe a tie with 'I will Always Love You", man she could sing that song and I would be in fantasy land until someone slapped me, well, anyway, great feeling she puts into it is so powerful.

Don Francisco sang this first and it is amazing. Dolly always does justice to other peoples songs.

I think there's been a huge mixup here, Pat. This is not a song to dance to. I know you've found out by now.... great song and performance, but it's just something to appreciate as Christians and we give thanks for the price He paid for OUR sins. I don't think you were disrespectful, people celebrate their own way, but don't be surprised if you get some noise from some very strict, can't do that and can't do this, you know. Always about living like in the old days. They shouldn't be on a computer to begin with!
