It's a shame that the quality wasn't what it should have been, because this is, perhaps, Dolly's best performance of this song. This performance was from Dolly's 1983 concert in London's Dominion Theater that filmed and released as a US television special that same year. I keep hoping that someone will re-release the entire concert at some point. Many of Dolly's songs from the late '60s, and into the very early '70s were very dark, and told similar stories. "My Blue Ridge Mountain Boy", "The Bridge" and "Just Because I'm a Woman" are definitely all worth a listen.

I never in my life heard the verse about the old lady, Miss O'Grover. I only read it just now, on a lyrics site. Maybe she thought it made the song run long.

Thank you! This is one of my favorite songs. Sorry about not giving you a heads up about how emotional this song is, but I feel that would have had an impact on the reaction in one way or another. Very well done. [Dover is the capital of Delaware] I witnessed many girls going through this at that young of age and the shame and outrageous behavior of many were horrific. But lets face it, this has been happening since the beginning of humans. I am 60+ years old and my grandparents had to get married in the early 1920s. My grandmother was from a very wealthy family who disowned her and told her that she was dead to them. Her parents never saw my grandmother again and never met any of their seven grandchildren. Stone cold hearts and souls.

I love this song but this is not my favorite version. The problem with releasing a live version is that if you have made a mistake, that mistake has to stand because there is no take 2 for you to get it right. There is a line that is missing from this live version about how during her pregnancy she gets a job taking care of an old lady who lives on a secluded farm and she says the lady never asks her any questions so she never talks to her about her baby. Of course, since the old lady is the only one she has any contact with, that means that she doesn't talk to anyone about her baby. Mothers-to-be love talking to anyone and everyone about their expected baby but this young lady cannot do that. So sad. It's also sad that her family sent her from the homeplace and that she honestly believed he would be coming down from Dover. To the very end, she trusted in him. This song breaks my heart. I'm not sure Dolly had any Dover in particular in mind when she wrote this song but I do know that besides Dover, Delaware there is a much less well known Dover, Tennessee that is not far from Nashville and since Dolly had such strong ties to Nashville, she MAY have had Dover, Tennessee in mind, OR she may have simply been using a city name that she thought sounded "right" in the song. A commenter below, popland1977, gives the address of kzread.info/dash/bejne/f45lq65xgpjZg7w.html which she correctly said is a much better quality. It also has the missing line about her living with the old lady during her pregnancy.

That verse was not in the original version, that was on Fairest of Them All, from 1970. She must've written that verse for the version on Little Sparrow. It does fill out the story ,a bit more.

I think I can remember Dolly saying something to the effect that when she first recorded it in 1970, RCA asked her to take a verse out to shorten it, as country music albums followed a very specific format in those days, and they didn't like to have songs exceed three minutes in length.
