I can't remember when Melissa finally got big enough to be safe in coming out as a lesbian, but it made such a difference in hearing all her previous songs of love and longing that were originally interpreted as if she was straight, and then all the ones moving forward, like this one. One of the best female voices in rock history. Definitely check out some of the other hits. I doubt anyone else has suggested that you listen to Nicole Atkins and her song 'The Way It Is', but she would blow you away. One of the most soaring and powerful choruses I know of, and gives me chills every time I hear it.

She'd actually just come from a chemotherapy session right before that performance, and she said it took every bit of energy she had to hit that crazy note toward the end of the song...but she did it, and the whole performance was incredible! She went straight home after and right to bed...but that performance is iconic, and it blows me away every time I hear it. What I find even more impressive, is the way she handled her son's death last summer (2020). She'd been doing regular performances from home during quarantine, and she didn't stop. She said it's music that has always gotten her through the toughest times, so why would she stop? At the time, I'd just come home from the hospital after having a double bypass (heart surgery), and it was an emotional time for me...but watching her videos after she'd just lost her son gave me strength. She's always an inspiration.

Amber will be happy to hear that Melissa Etheridge has covered some of Janis Joplin's songs, and she actually inducted Janis Joplin into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1995. At the 2005 Grammy Awards show, Melissa Etheridge did a Janis Joplin tribute that was amazing. She was in chemotherapy at the time and showed tremendous grit appearing in public to perform that tribute. You can find videos of the tribute performance on KZread. Anything she's done is good, she's one of those musicians other musicians admire and ask to play on their tracks :-) Love especially anything she's done with Bruce Hornsby - I think I saw your reaction to Heart doing their cover of "Stairway to Heaven" - she's the one in the audience who was doing "prayer hands" as she listened, 😆

So glad you found Melissa Etheridge. I used to own a retail CD store for 11 years and promoted concerts for 7 years. The first year I was open there were 4 albums that changed the direction of popular music: Joe Satriani - Surfing With the Alien; Guns n Roses - Appetite for Destruction; Living Colour - Vivid; and Melissa Etheridge’s self titled first album. In trying to get customers to try her first album, I told hundreds of people “If Janis Joplin and Bob Dylan had had a kid, it would have been Melissa Etheridge.” I saw her live twice in the early years. “Like the Way I Do” is a hard rockin’ love lost song. She plays the hell out of her 12-string and I love some of the uncommon language she uses in this one and “Bring Me Some Water,” both on her first release.

Conversational, tells a story to every song, and of course has that amazing tone to her voice. During the start of the pandemic lockdown she did daily (free) online concerts and said she was going to continue until lockdown ended no matter how many days, weeks, or months that took. She held true to her word until sadly her son unexpectedly passed away. She loves her fan base and I'm so happy my husband introduced me to her music.

Another. Great. Reaction. This is Melissa Etheridge at her zenith. This was early ‘90’s. She reminds me of a more healthy, forthright Janis. Had she lived, she would likely have transitioned to sounds like this. Melissa was obviously heavily influenced by Janis and has spoken of her eloquently. You should also react to her acoustic rendition of “Piece of My Heart,” which she performed live while inducting JJ into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1995 - very brave and incredible performance. Also her own tune “Come to My Window” is well worth your reaction. In some ways even stronger than this one.
