Because everyone deserves love and kindness in a world where there are those who think cruelty is strength. Please, take care of yourself, Benjamin77.

"The Joke" won 2 Grammy awards for Best American Roots Song and Best American Roots Performance in 2019. Brandi Carlile said on NPR of the track, "There are so many people feeling misrepresented [today] ... So many people feeling unloved. Boys feeling marginalized and forced into these kind of awkward shapes of masculinity that they do or don't belong in ... so many men and boys are trans or disabled or shy. Little girls who got so excited for the last election (2016), and are dealing with the fallout. The song is just for people that feel under-represented, unloved or illegal."

I had my fingers crossed that you'd do Brandi Carlile's "The Joke" on a Female Friday. This is my favorite of hers (and she has many great songs). I love the message of how many people feel excluded from life, belittled and struggling to find his or her place in this world of woe. Society can be so cruel to people labeled as "other" or "not our kind of people". We are all unique, special individuals with so much to contribute to this world. Brandi points out that ultimately the joke will be on those who strive to put down any of God's creatures.

Around 2000 we were lucky enough to discover Brandi when she opened for Jonny Lang at the House of Blues in N.O. It was Jonny’s acoustic tour and one of the best shows I’ve ever heard. Brandi came out with guitar and the guys that play with her ( the twins!). We stood at the old wooden stage right in front of them while they sat on stools and simply played acoustic guitar and sang just like we were in our own living room! IT. WAS. AMAZING!! ♥️ She has such a powerful voice to be so soft and soothing. She said that she was always told that her voice was a mix of Patsy Cline and - Amber, JANIS JOPLIN! because she can wail!! After, we got to meet her and bought her first limited release CD which only had maybe 5 tracks but we wore it out. Needless to say we became fans on the spot! And I’ve mentioned Jonny Lang before! You guys really need to check him out for guitar skills that are unmatched and a voice like none other! And yeah he played that night sitting in a chair just tapping his foot and brought the house down!! Didn’t even need accompaniment for most of the show. Great reaction guys! Love y’all. 🎶 ♥️ 🎶

I think both of you would enjoy the Highwomen covering Fleetwood Mac’s “The Chain”. The Highwomen is a group with Brandi Carlisle, Amanda Shires, Maren Morris and Natalie Hemby.

If you haven't, you have to see the Grammy performance of this song! That voice isn't just a processed studio version... i've been in a room and heard her live and had goosebumps for about 2 hours straight.

Jay, Amber, thank you for allowing us to share your journey while you experience the music that is the songbook of our lives. Your exuberance, empathy, and joy, that you so freely show, while you do, is a blessing to us, your faithful RSR family. The passage of time can harden us, but you are there to remind us of what that music means, and how we felt when we first heard it. You punch through the walls that time has built around our hearts. Thank you for the blessing that your example provides to me.

Great reaction, another uplifting song, about peace and harmony that is right up your guys lane is AQUARIUS/Let THE SUNSHINE IN The song came out in the late 60s and became like a rallying cry , sung by Billy Davis and Marilyn McCoo, who some 50 years later are still happily married and still making great music. AQUARIUS will not make you cry, it will make you get up and move.

What a unique voice. I really, really like Brandi Carlile. Never heard her before. What a great song for today. We rarely take the time to understand that *everyone* has experienced pain, fear and loss and we should help each other get through it. That's the Golden Rule in action.

This song reminds me of something that one of my mentors drilled into me: People will forget your name, forget where they met you and forget the details of any conversation that you had, but they will never forget the way you made them feel." Words to live by.

I have never heard that song. Thank you for reacting to it. I am dyslexic and have been told many times that there’s things I can’t do, that I would never succeed. My Dad told me to never listen to them. My parents believed in me and that is all I needed. I am now a college graduate, Economics degree with a minor in Chemistry. The joke is on them.

I've been following Brandi Carlile since the release of "The Story" in 2007. It took too long for Brandi to get the recognition that I felt she merited (as well as "The Twins"). I still recall her live performance of this on the Grammy Awards a few years ago. It was powerful! She and The Twins have written and performed so many great songs. A good next reaction would be "The Story."

Brandi is part of a “supergroup” called “the highwomen”- they did a song by the same name. It is an answer to/new version of the “highway man” song done by “the highway men” ie Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, Kris Kristofferson, & Willie Nelson. If you haven’t heard the original, I highly recommend it, along with the new version by the ladies!

Jay and Amber, it is an honor to be here as you share your true colors. You show us you are real. The reason I chose a life in music is exactly what just happened to all of us here. Music is truly the healing force of the universe and kind people like you with a platform of heart and soul and joy….of peace, love and unity reminds me so much of the words of Dr. Maya Angelou…”We are more alike, my friends, than we are unalike.” Thanks for bringing great music into our lives and thank you for being there to share with us. I have taken to ending my show with “make somebody smile”

Ever since then, every time I hear her voice, it just touches my soul, and my eyes well up.You should do a video of her song "Turpentine", if you want a good cry!. It's about her brother. Man, she is really young in that one.
