Johnette should be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame period.
@tonyelliott5045

i agree they created iconic music that should be in the hall of fame. however...the band (specifically Johnette) was so anti record label and music industry, that they burned a lot of bridges. they fought the music business every step of their career, and left them without a label and broke in the end. had they had a stronger manager I feel they would have lasted to this day.

Johnette Napolitano is POWER!! Most underrated voices, period!!!
The lead singer is the great Johnette Napolitano. She's a powerhouse, but her voice also has a dark, almost sinister quality to it. Next Stops: "Bloodletting" "Happy Birthday" "Tomorrow, Wendy"

I logged on specifically to suggest Tomorrow Wendy. The only question is do they listen to the live version from "Still In Hollywood" or the original studio version from "Bloodletting". So many songs to mention but I have also have to say Little Conversations and definitely Mexican Moon and Bajo La Lune Mexicana (Spanish Version - Same Song) back to back.
I won't lie, the first time I ever heard this song back in the early 90's I actually cried. I was sitting home alone in my first apartment and it came on the radio and it really did make me cry.
@johnplaysgames3120

I won't lie, when I first heard this song as a teen, I loved the sound of her voice and the sound of the song but I didn't really process the lyrics. Same with Tracy Chapman's "Fast Car." I could sing the hook and a few choice lines but if you asked me what the song was about afterward, I'd be like, "Uhh.... hm." As an adult, re-experiencing some of these songs with Jay and Amber and y'all, now *I'm* sitting home alone and crying. Actually, Pink Floyd's "Time" did the same thing to me as well. As a teen, I thought it was a cool sounding song. As an adult, it's heartbreaking.

I'm a die-hard Metalhead, but this is one of my favorite songs. Partially because I used to be a Joey. I was a serious alcoholic, and likely would be dead were it not for my fiancé standing by me; helping me get past my problems and giving me something to look forward to. I am the man I am today because of her. I know that there were several times that she should have left me, and although I never physically hurt her, I was the reason that she cried way more than once. I owe her my life and will forever be indebted to her.

Thank you for giving Concrete Blonde some love. They are one of the best bands ever and are well past getting some love! You earned a subscriber!
In 1982 when I live in the San Fernando Valley in CA some friends introduced me to someone that sang and had a band. Back then every one had a band, right? So I did not think much about it until I met Johnette Napolitano, the singer in this band. Yes, incredible voice. She told me at the time they described her voice as something between Ann Wilson of Heart and Cher. I used to visit this couple, Johnette and Jim Mankey were Concrete Blonde, quite frequently when they were renting a house in the Valley. Probably visited them too much. But they were very nice about it. Johnette is a great conversationalist and I had recently broke up with my GF so she was great to talk to. I think they thought I may have had amourous ambitions toward Johnette, which was not the case. In any event, they moved to Hollywood and never looked back. I am surprised Johnette has not commented on other reactors. I would not be surprised to see her show up in the comments section somewhere. She has strong opinions and is not afraid to express them. She is also very socially conscious, politically progressive and does speak out. Extremely gifted and talented person that I had the privilege to meet and interact with as a friend back then.
Johnette Napolitano's voice is mezmerizing and so unique...love this band's sound all round! thx for sharing Rob Squad :)

Beyond criminally underrated. Johnette is the greatest female vocalist on earth. I'm glad more people are noticing.
The singer/ bass player is Johnette Napolitano, and yes, her husky voice is intoxicating. This was a project she started in the mid 80s with guitar player Jim Mankey, who had been in a cultish LA band called Sparks in the early 70s. This album (1990's "Bloodletting") is an absolute masterpiece. And I know Halloween is over, but the title track to this album is a creepy, gothic thing of beauty. I was 18 when this came out, and knew a couple of people who were engaging in self-destructive behavior not unlike this; as a result, this hit hard. You may not be ready to re-visit this topic again just yet, but "She Talks To Angels" by The Black Crowes kind of explores this same theme (it came out the same year, too).

Concrete Blonde was an alternative Rock band from the 80’s through the 90’s… they broke up a few times and got back together. Great memories from my early 20’s. Good one Amber… I do hear the Cher tone.

Yes, probably their best known, but far from the best, and far less an example of how haunting Johnette's voice truly is. The first time I heard "Tomorrow Wendy" I was driving north on the 405 leaving the Valley, ironically, under a "Cold an gray November sky...". It took a minute, I drove a couple more miles, and it hit me like a ton of bricks. I had to pull off at San Fernando Road and sobbed like a baby for half an hour. It brought back the memory of my Mom the day JFK was killed, sitting on the floor with her knees pulled to her chest, weeping. That, along with all the other images it evokes, and I'm still toast 30 years later even thinking about the song.

One of my favorite bands of all time, and a great song. Check out Bloodletting and Mexican Moon albums especially. I also really like "Concrete Blonde y Los Illegals", which was a collaboration between them and, you guessed it, "Los Illegals". Concrete Blonde retired as a band in 2006, but briefly got back together for a small 9-city tour in 2012. I was lucky enough to see them on that tour at the Sinclair in Cambridge MA, which was the opening night at that venue, the first show ever played there. General admission, standing room. I was able to work my way right up next to the stage. Good times!
God is a bullet, and Caroline are other great song from the Blonde. Have always loved this underated band.

I had Bloodletting when I saw the CD Single for "Ghost of a Texas Ladies Man" at the store. Bought it on impulse. It had four tracks, including the title, an extended version of Bloodletting, Everybody Knows, and The Ship Song. Blew my mind. Most of the guys I hung out with at the time ended up getting that CD, and we all admitted to listening to all four songs on repeat, just to get to the final notes of The Ship Song and want to listen to the entire set again, just for those final notes. And the song Ghost of a Texas Ladies Man showcases Johnette's ability to sing something in a different genre and not nearly so serious, while remaining true to herself. Concrete Blonde doing a country-style song? Worth checking out. :D

A straight up classic. What a song!
Oh thank you guys so much…I have been waiting and waiting for this, one of my all time favorites 💚✨🌻🙏…she covers Leonard Cohen’s ‘everybody knows’, it’s beautiful, also ‘tomorrow Wendy’ is beautiful, And ‘God is a bullet’ is amazing as well, I could go on and on I pretty much loved everything they did LOL glad you found them, Johnette Napolitano was also in a band called ‘dream six’ for a while although I can’t remember any of their song names…but her voice is amazing! 😊💕💫

@@d-2793 yes! That whole album is amazing and that cover photo is Everything. Have you seen the videos for Damage I’ve Done when she fronted the reformed talking heads - then renamed “The Heads”? It’s an incredible song and on the album she shares lead vocals with Debbie Harry.

@@d-2793 😊💕 I chose a Concrete Blonde concert over a job in my twenties! Had my shift covered but the girl screwed me over, they told me it was my responsibility,...needless to say it was a great concert!
Oof. I love this album so much. Johnette Napolitano is the lead singer and bass player. "Tomorrow, Wendy" off this album is so dark. From a different album, but you should check out "Ghost of a Texas Ladies Man"
Sooo good. Got chills listening to it.
I just want to thank you for the joy you have brought into my life. It's not just the songs but the infectious smiles and your beautiful family . I am house bound and I look forward to your clips daily. A happy fan from Australia
Not to mention her solo work. The album scarred has the song “Amazing” on it.
Two other Concrete Blonde songs that are a must. Walking in London and Bloodletting (The Vampire Song).
"I'm not angry anymore." always hit me hardest because it's so often a confession of ignorance. (at least in my case) If I just knew more, if I just knew how far my meager helping hand might have gone, or even just a kind word. Make someone smile! You never know how far it might reach.
My ex-wife was in a band when this song was released. She immediately put it in her song list. There wasn’t one night that she played where this song wasn’t requested less than twice. It was very popular at clubs and bars in 1990.

I would add "Where Have All The Cowboys Gone?" by Paula Cole and "Connection" by Elastica. Great 90s songs.
One of my favorite songs of all time. Thank you for making it relevant again for a new audience and generation.
Thank you for choosing this! Brings back lots of memories listening to it.
Such a good song, I'm so glad you guys got around to this one. So many amazing elements to this song, some obvious and others that you find after repeated listens. That drum break before the solo to let you catch your breath after that first powerful "I'm not angry anymore", and then that perfect solo. One of the most memorable ballads of the 90s.
I’m not sure why, but for some reason I always put 3 songs into a space of my music nostalgia: Joey -Concrete Blonde Only The Lonely -The Motels and Harden My Heart -Quarterflash Similarly, all 3 have fantastic, unique guitar solos that are fun to play, and to listen to. , 2/3 of the videos take place in a club/bar. I recommend these wholeheartedly, if you loved Joey.

Well said you two. Great song. I have this song on repeat in my car and listen to it every time I'm out driving. It's such a mellow yet soothing song and her voice is comforting.
So glad to see you react to this! One of my faves from this era
Late 80’s and 1990 were Concrete Blonde’s best shot at success. After that alternative took over and the jaded LA sound was dismissed. I always liked their early song Still In Hollywood. A fantastic feel-good rocker.

Was hoping you would stumble on to Concrete Blonde on Fridays!! Great band, many great songs! They cover Little Wing, Everybody Knows, Mercedes Benz, Simple Twist of Fate... She hits hard with God Is A Bullet, Heal It Up, Caroline ,Tomorrow Wendy... I think she has one of the best, if not the best, rock voices ever. James Mankey's guitar work, and knowledge of effects is fantastic as well. Many live performances on Letterman out there on KZread, he adored her.
YOU DID IT! Thank you for hearing me on Johnette! Now you just have to do "Heal It Up" and BE AMAZED!
The most underrated band ever. I've loved them since Free in '89 and my greatest musical regret is not seeing them live.
I have never heard this song. Tuff but a message that needs to be heard. Great pick and reaction.
“Joey, if you’re hurtin’ so am I” ~ Concrete Blonde
I used to open with this song during gigs when fronting my band. It got standing ovations. I love this song and group.
Every time this came on the radio I would have a hard time listening to it because my dad was an alcoholic. Many of the things she feels in the song I have gone through in him but watching him struggle.
Tomorrow Wendy is another compelling but heavy song from Concrete Blonde. They have so many great songs. My favorites include Happy Birthday, Free, Still in Hollywood, Rain, and Bloodletting.
Johnette Napiltano is the lead singer, bass player & song writer of the band Concrete Blonde. Joey came out in the early 90s. The Concrete Blonde Bloodletting album was the very first compact disc (CD) I bought 🤣😂. Concrete Blonde is serious good & Johnette’s haunting achey voice is amazing. Other songs: Caroline, True, Bloodletting (the vampire song). Heal it up, Everybody Knows. They are more of a heavy band that does many slower haunting songs as well as rocking!! ❤️❤️❤️ thank you Amber & J
Hits me in the heart and makes me both cry with a smile of relief. It's about forgiveness, acceptance, understanding, and love that patiently stands by when you don't feel you deserve it or like yourself. It's bigger and deeper than just the words.
I've been a Concrete Blonde fan for years. I saw them twice live and Johnette once solo. Joey is my favorite song of theirs. I interviewed Johnette some years back and she is the most down to earth person. Such a voice.
This band all day! Very many great songs. Johnette is my favorite singer.
