Yes and the league has more parity nowadays. Right now you don't see a team that plays like a juggernait compared to many others, so the championship race is wide open, and it seems like teams like the Thunder have more opportunity to thrive and eventually win a championship. The teams that are suppoused to win because of star power have been failing repeatedly in the regular season and playoffs, so when we see a team who play like OKC we'll be more inclined to think they can make it. It's the reason the Nuggets went on to be champions last year, and the reason I thought they'd had to prove themselves yet again this year, the league is still wide open.

And remember PG's like Isiah Thomas, Oscar Robertson, and even CP3. AI also had the game, only lacked the championships and more team success. @@duffal0 Ja is a very highly dominant offensive player, and excells at playmaking. He isn't as good a shooter as Shai is, but that's the point of him being an offensive beast, he doesn"t need to, and dominates the game offensively just the same as Shai does. I don't know about his defense, and have probably heard Shai is a very good defender, so can't comment on that, but being a better defender alone doesn't necessarily make Shai the better player. Also as good as Shai is, Doncic is better (and better than Ja too). I always forget Luka as a PG, but he's another example of why Shai can't be easily considered a top 5 PG of all time.

It's going to be interesting to see what happens with this team over the next few years. Are the Thunder going to package players and picks up to make a trade? WIll they let these young guys walk in free agency as they come off of their rookie deals and hope that they keep getting lucky with the draft? I don't think that they are going to open up the books and keep paying their players into the second tax apron. That would mean that they lose their first round picks, and this team isn't scrambling to trade any of those picks. That tells me that this team isn't going to spend that much.

Chet has always reminded me of how strong Abraham Lincoln was said to have been. He can’t necessarily get big and fat but that isn’t necessarily good for a NBA player to be anyway. Sam is an incredible GM. Great talent evaluator, but it goes beyond that. Harden requested Sam draft him as I recall. When it came time for that contract and Harden wanted just a bit more, it’s not that he couldn’t get it or deserve it, it’s that it went off code. He was being loyal to himself, not the team. He wouldn’t sacrifice now to reap the reward later, when the prospect of rewards now and rewards later seemed within reach, but only individually. Being able to parse out guys like that and keep the energy high even in trying times is what his quote really boils down too. A winning culture versus a culture you can win with. That’s really profound in terms of a basketball team and family. My feelings on that trade seem to change the more I learn about, not necessarily the results they achieved, but the manner in which they achieved them. There’s a quote from Gladiator that I believe sums it up nicely. What we do in life. Echos in eternity. It’s true. I’d love to see the clippers and thunder meet in the playoffs this year. It’d be cool if KD returned to the Thunder for his final year in the league and went out with another chip and OKC’s first if they don’t just win the thing this year. Oh what time to be alive. Not many people know this but when Shai was briefly a high schooler in Hamilton, he got cut from a team and my brother in law tried telling the coach he was making a mistake. However not long after that he probably hit a growth spurt of sorts and ended up heading to the US. The fact that same kid is the player they call SGA today is not a surprise if your familiar with how much something like that can push you to great heights. A la Mike Jordan. Funny we talk about luck being in the right place at the right time. SGA was drafted by Charlotte in 2018. Traded to LA. (Kobe!) OKC didn’t have a 1st rd pick that year. Next year they draft Brandon Clarke, trade him to Memphis. Get SGA 11th pick in last years draft. So he’s drafted 3 MVPs, lost one in free agency. Traded away 2 and possibly might be coming up on having been traded one back with the spoils to really take it to another level. That’s uncanny.

You could have gone back further to Ibaka"s expiring contract that they traded to Orlando for Sabonis and Oladipo. Of course they were traded for PG. So basically they got SGA and all those picks for an expiring contract.

Correction: Kawhi is not yet on the Clippers when they made the PG trade. Kawhi's prerequisite to sign with the Clippers is if they get PG13. That's why LAC is willing to trade all those picks, it's like trading to get both PG and Kawhi.

There is a difference in "This GM drafted 3 MVP-level players" vs. "This GM drafted 3 guys that literally were MVPs during a ~5 year span" Presti is not perfect. But given that he is operating from Oklahoma, is ~35Y old and mostly under-the-cap budget - he could get a statue. Some fun fact: Sam Presti managed to get into the game of pulling Carmelo from NYC to Oklahoma :-D

I'm glad for Presti. IMO, the only thing they needed to win back in the early 10's was more time playing together and a better role for Russ. Until this day i dont understand why they let Russ became a pg, Harden was the one who needed to be the starting pg (he was already a good passer and have a better basketball IQ than Russ since day one). Russ eventually became a good passer and pg, but i truly believe he had the chance to become a competent 3&D sg in less time than that. At least todays OKC the young fellas know their role, and they work as a unit, that's something you can't teach easily.

I think it was more role player issues. As someone who followed the Thunder all of those years. The center position was an issue until Steven Adams. And the sg position was an issue by then(after harden trade). Just struggled to fill some important 2 way role player slots around their stars. Always had great defenders but often questionable offensive abilities.
