How the same Dallas play bewildered the Wolves defense
Спорт
How did Dallas comeback in the 4th? Why was Luka on an island on the last play? This watch along reaction film breakdown details what the Mavs offense ran over and over down the stretch, why the Wolves defense is having a hard time stopping, Anthony Edwards decision-making, Rudy Gobert's defensive coverages and more.

Minnesota against Phoenix and Denver was disciplined and locked in and their effort level was astronomical Luka and Kyrie are that good but Minnesota is letting them get whatever they want. Go watch how LA and OKC defended them. Yeah they still made shots obviously that those defenses were actively taking things away whereas Minnesota is playing like it's a back-to-back against Detroit in February.

You have double-penetration threats from THE two best finishers in the league, and both are capable of being phenomenal playmakers as well. Luka is a generational talent who has the ability to fake out defenders with potential lobs, assists, drives, kickouts, or stepback 3s. Dallas is also experienced and unphased by huge leads, so they'll keep attacking you the full 48 minutes until they steal the game. You did not face these challenges in Phoenix or Denver.

@aceloco817 given the circumstances, Dallad is the best place for him to be. Kyrie will retire a Mav, Luka is gonna sign that max contract, Gafford is perfect as an on court mentor while he has Tyson Chandler off the court. Plus he's been given nearly as much minutes as you could want in a rookie season and is now shining in the playoffs. For once since the 2011 season, the Mavs just hapoen to have the right mix of players at the right time. Thing about it is, every player at every position is younger than that championship team if ai'm nit mistaken and I'd argue, all are more talented at their position. Kyrie Irving/Jason Kidd, Jason Terry, Caron Butler/Derrick Jones Jr, Shawn Marion/ PJ Washington Jr, Dirk/Luka, Tyson Chandler/DLive n Gafford. The talent of our team matches uo with the talent of any team in the NBA. Celtics may give us a little bit of problems, but I got Mavs in 6 or 7. yes I agree, there is a guy in LA that plays with modern shaq with defense plus a tailor made roster, his game impacts winning, he is consistently in the play in and he can afford to pad his stats in the 4th and freeze out teammates, he is a point forward you know. plus there is that guy in philly, 7 foot but takes 6 3s per game plus 50 FTs, he also plays like 30 games per year (not his fault that he is injury prone, but durability is ability) and he is the MVP, also that guy in boston that plays on an all star roster, very impactful when it comes to winning. its those euro guys in denver and dallas that are stat padders, their games dont impact winning, even though one of them won a championship with no all stars on his team while averaging a super efficient triple double and the other one was giving work to kawhi and george as a 20 year old, beat the shit out of the 1st seed in the west that had paul and booker on it with dwight powell as a prominent teammate. they are also not jacked so that means that they play bad defense.

F these Luka deniers and this begrudging azz channel
Great commentary.
Great stuff
I hit a last second game winner from the 3 point line once. I can tell you the basket does look much bigger and closer because of the adrenaline. For me It was just city league basketball but still apparently this kind of thing doesn’t happen that often. I was looking at a video where MJ has a total of 8 of 9 in his entire career.
It's really tough for them because they either give up a wide open corner 3 or a dunk/lob but this is one of the problems with defense now you have to sell out so hard on the pnr there's just elite offense everywhere if you have the vision of guys like Luka, Jokic, and Lebron.

It is but they just did this against Denver. They stayed attached to the ball handler, played the lob and the help defender busted his ass to get back to contest the three. Now they aren't staying attached (and a lot of times not even contesting the shot) -- except NAW; he's been fantastic still -- they are playing the ball and giving up the lob, and the help defender is staying attached to the "shooters" vs playing help and recover

@@michaelahurt the thing is murray is far away from these 2 guards luka and irving. skill wise and intellectual wise. murray is more of a shooting guard and not creative as luka and kyrie.

@@michaelahurt Right but that's mostly because of how much better Luka is a manipulating defenders than Murray who mostly relied on elite shot making. I agree in a sense because they aren't selling out on anything well. They're not taking away the lob or contesting Luka well. The only thing they do well is take away the corner 3.

@@lubo1358 Luka is better than Murray but Jokic is pretty good at manipulating defenses too and he was also running a ton of PnR It's just about effort and discipline. Against Denver they were hyper aware of Denver's tendencies and worked to take them away, worked to stay attached, and worked like hell to recover 25 feet to shooters. Realistically Minnesota should be able to do exactly what LA did -- make Luka beat you with mid-range jumpers -- just with better personnel but like you said, they aren't taking _anything_ away so Dallas is getting whatever they want I've said it a bunch but I think Minnesota's players were really feeling themselves and thought they did something. That's how they are playing anyway

@@michaelahurt I don't think that's the case. Edwards is just streaky and so is KAT and when you're two main scorers are like that it can be hard to win games consistently.
im a huge mavs fan (since 2010s) but this rule where they cant call the foul after review is pure bullshit...whoever came up with that rule needs to be sacked IMMEDIATLY
That challenge and last offensive play for Edwards were the difference makers for me. Twolves absolutely had it 💨💨💨
Nice breakdown.
7:48 Another Rudy Gobert Classic
he’s so mad to be talking about the mavericks finally lol
Golbert is the one consistent player the Wolves have. Yes he’s on the spotlight but Ant and Kat deserve more blame. They’re supposed to be superstars? Ant was never at that level. He just haven’t encountered tough defense in this playoffs before this series and people are hyping him up so much.
Man, Kidd is following Spoelstra is doing last year :).
Idk why the wolves don't just switch that first screen... That's part of why they're getting burned on that stagger play
@shaneyy__
Ай бұрын
That’s what the second screen is for. Now you have to go over or under that screen. Go under and Luka just jerks back to the inside to reverse it. Go over and he picks you apart like a normal pick and roll. Switch it and Luka picks it apart like he did to end the game. If it were as easy as a single switch, a lot less points would be scored
I got to admit I'm guilty of banging on about how Kidd is awful as a coach but I gotta admit I was dead wrong he is putting on a masterful performance.
👏👏👍 Man, these two teams are so close in talents, actually they’re all are - Thunders, Nuggets, Mavs, Wolves. The T-Wolves really made some mental mistakes down the stretch to lose ALL games 1 to 3. M.I.A. missing in actions are Edwards’ aggressiveness and clutch, leadership, Towns’ long ball and points in the paint, and Rudy’s defense against Gafford/Lively. Different T-Wolves role players stepped up in every games but the Wolves’ trio decided to played disappearing acts. At the end of the day, I’m still rooting for Wolves, still rooting for Mavs, still rooting for a great game 7.
Obviously, Ant is young. He’s learning. He’s incredible. But missing both shooters on that last turnover play is crazy. Naz was 7/8 from three at that point and had like 15 feet of space from his defender. Idk how you don’t pass it to Naz.
Great observation on Gobert defending the drive too much, he did it different/better with 46 seconds left staying closer and funneling doncic towards help. But the real story is these dumb turnovers and mental lapses by Edwards (2 terrible passes/decisions in crunch time) and surprisingly conley (who seems to be in the wrong location so often on defence). And please, Minnesota, will you consider a 2-3 zone defence with mcdaniels and Edwards on top?
I've heard a rumor he doesn't impact winning and usually his teams do better without him, maybe they should have considered sitting Doncic down for the final play instead of Gobert 😉 Just putting it out there
9:30 we actually did get a funk on that play
I'm a die hard Mavs fan but I was pretty disgusted with the out of bounds call from McDaniel's where it was clearly a foul from Kyrie. There needs to be some rule revisions to stop this from happening.
3:30 mins left, he takes Kai and Luka out for the possession, and they actually get a stop, what a call.
Do they not enforce the free throw line violation anymore? Ive seen Edwards consistently step over the line before the ball makes contact with the rim when hes shooting free throws, and they are never called for a line violation
If the mavs win this series the Nuggets is done with Porter. These lively, Gad and PJ are doing their role and winning.
Some of the highest level ball I’ve ever seen is this Mavs playoff run. Wolves defense is as advertised but Mavs are able to walk them down inevitably.

There was ABSOLUTELY NO REASON FOR RUDY TO SWITCH ONTO LUKA FOR THAT FINAL SHOT.. YOU FIGHT THROUGH THE PICK AND MAKE THEM TAKE A TOUGH CONTESTED 2..

How about any player not on skates would have made that tougher at least. It’s like Rudy faked out himself. It’s amusing the best defender supposedly in the league is that bad at movement.
That double pick and roll is so effective against teams with slow bigs. You just get everyone into a good position, and let luka and his elite playmaking do the rest

lol i saw that goofiness
If you were Minnesota what adjustments would you make to defend the staggered screen the Mavs run for Donkic and Irving? Is Gobbert a defensive liability against this team’s scheme?
what did Kidd do at the end with the dude courtside when Naz missed the last shot?
@untexan
Ай бұрын
It was Derrick Jones, he ended up over there after contesting the Naz shot
What if they pressure Luka to use his left hand more or attack from the left side, that way he settles for more contested threes. It will also force a lot more turnovers from him because right now he is very comfortable.
10:45 Conley travelled
At some point on the staggered PnRs the Wolves are going to have to have Rudy just sit on the roll/closer to the rim and have one of their bigs on the strong side help off of the corner shooter onto Luka. Especially if they empty the side and have 2 players in one corner like at 9:35 … these dunks are killing them.
Great analysis as always and while all the usual casuals Gobert haters focus on the last Doncic shot, This shows all the plays that built-up into this T'Wolves loss: outbound foul of McDaniels that was not called by the officials, Edwards throwing the ball out...
