Per Songfacts 10cc members Eric Stewart and Graham Gouldman wrote this song; Stewart sang lead. The lyric is based on Stewart's real-life experience. "I remember walking through the rain and the snow when I lived in Manchester and we didn't have a telephone," he said in a BBC Radio Wales interview. "I had to go and find a phone box to ring the girl who was about to become my wife. The phones were down, and it was snowing, and these, these vivid pictures are there. If you put them in a song, a lot of people identify with a similar situation." In a Songfacts interview with Graham Gouldman, he talked about writing this song with Eric Stewart. "When we started writing that, we had some of the music and he wanted to write a song about suicide," Gouldman said. "I told him that was not a good idea and fortunately he agreed. He came up with the title 'The Things We Do For Love,' which is very up and a great title really. What are the things we do for love? What do you do? What should we do for love?"

10cc are a great English rock band from the 70's. This group was super talented as every member was a multi-instrumentalist, singer, writer & producer. "I'm Not In Love" was their biggest hit in 1975 but they had other songs such as "Rubber Bullets", "The Dean & I", "The Wall Street Shuffle", "Silly Love", "Life Is A Minestrone", "Art For Art's Sake", "I'm Mandy, Fly Me" etc.

My dad usually calls them the most underrated band of all time, and I can see it. I never really hear them played, and most people have only ever heard "I'm not in love".

In 1977 two members of 10CC (Kevin Godley & Lol Creme) left the band and formed Godley & Creme. They wrote & sang some great songs..... "Cry" "Under Your Thumb" & "Wedding Bells".... Please give them a listen. I think you'll like them. 👍 🎶🎼🎙❤

I glanced at the comments, but didn't see a request for "Cry" by Godley & Creme. Lol Creme (Guitar & Keyboards) & Kevin Godley (drums) for 10cc had some success in '85 with "Cry" It peaked at 16 in '85.

All there songs are so different- LOVE them

great band. Thanks for posting. Graham Gouldman in 10CC wrote the soundtrack for ANIMALYMPICS ( 1980 ) which you can hear on youtube. Graham began song writing age 15 and wrote great songs for THE HOLLIES and THE YARDBIRDS.

When this song came out @ 76/77, I thought it was the Partridge Family! Mind you, I was 8 years old in 76! I still listen to this song. It's a bouncy little ditty👍

Eric Stewart, the singer of 10CC was in the Mindbenders...The Game Called Love and Groovy Kind Of Love...

I hade several of their albums. They were very creative. But you know this by now. Also listen to "Wax", as two of the members of 10cc started Wax. Oh, don't forget "Wall street shuffle" by 10cc. Almost as good as "Good morning Judge".

What a great song, I can remember this song playing all the time when I was a small child. My parents have great eclectic taste in music and I am so thankful I was exposed to and lived with the great music of Kate 60’s the 70’s and 80’s. Thank you for helping to keep great music alive.
