He's very much in love. Head over heels. He's just trying to deny it. That song has a really interesting story. They did tons of recording of the group's voices and mixed them to create that "airy" sound. Oh, and the woman's voice saying "big boys don't cry" was actually the record company's secretary.

You could not be more right! Many people, including our lovely hosts, misinterpret it based on the outward appearance of the lyrics. Yes, the guy is so in love but too proud to admit it! And the sound is divine. Thanks!

I'm surprised S&M didn't talk more about those dreamy multi-layered voices -- that was a totally different sound on the charts back in that great summer of 1975. It inspired Billy Joel to include a similar layering of voices on his big hit "Just the Way You Are."

Eric Stewart (the singer) wrote this "Tongue in Cheek" song in response to his wife's constantly telling him that he didn't tell her that he loved her enough times.....In reality, he loved her very much. The band searched high and low looking for the perfect voice to say the words "Big Boys Don't Cry" when their secretary/telephonist/tea maker etc. popped her head around the door while they were recording this, to tell them that they'd got a phone call and they all instantly knew that her voice was the exact voice that they were looking for. Eric and his wife are still married after more than 50 years......but it won't last..."It's Just a Silly Phase He's Going Through!"

They nearly binned the song because it wasn't working out. The secretary Kathy Redfern who voiced the big boys don't cry part, asked them what happened to that Not in Love song they were working on, she really liked it. So they went back to the song and added all the Moog synthesizer effects, and the song really worked. Check out ''Kathy Redfern, Strawberry Recording Studios'' if you want to see the face behind the voice.

The lyrics sound like someone doing a bad job of insisting he's not in love. True. However, the story of the song has been told many times. His wife asked him why he didn't say he loved her more often and he said things like that lose their meaning when you say them all the time. So, he decided to go the other way in the song. It was a humorous response to his wife's comment, and all underscored by his genuine, and totally non denied love for his wife.

  • @badplay156

  • @jamesrawlings5781

    @jamesrawlings5781

    2 жыл бұрын

@@badplay156 I'm sorry but that makes no sense. Yes, the guy in the song IS in love. However, judging by the lyrics, it sounds like the other person is definitely into him to. 'Don't tell your friends about the two of us'; 'don't get me wrong, don't think you've got it made'. Why would she think she'd got it made if she didn't like him too? The most convincing reading is that it's an immature response to a romantic relationship - he's trying to be too cool by denying he feels the same way as the other person. The idea that she has rejected him just isn't supported by the lyrics. And, as I've said repeatedly, we KNOW it's about his immature belief that telling his wife he loved her too often would diminish the meaning.

One of my all time favorite songs. The way the produced this song back then was ground breaking, and there are a few short (15 min, or so) documentaries about it. Queen and Billy Joel later borrowed this technique for some of their songs. The documentary will also explain what @walshaw mentioned in his comment about the lyrics.

Hi Guys! So nice to see you this Sunday, I was hoping you would be on today. :). You know, I always thought this song meant something different. My take on it was that he really did love the girl, so much that he had to keep himself from crying "big boys don't cry big boys don't cry...". But that he was trying not to let her see how deeply he was hurt by her. So he was pretending that he didn't care about her. The part that made me feel that way was second verse when he said "he had her picture on the wall because it hid a nasty stain that was hiding there" and that he would not give it back. He was making an excuse because he treasured the picture. I don't know what the real meaning was suppose to be, but that is what I have always thought when I listened to the song. Have a great day!

10cc, with their first 4 or 5 albums just nailed it -- they had their own recording studio, so the production is superb. Fascinating group that deserves more attention. 'The Things we Do for Love' was a hit for them, but I also love 'Art for Arts Sake' and 'Don't Hang Up' which got college radio play back in the day. Two members split off, (Creme and Godley) and made a few interesting albums of their own and produced videos for Herbie Hancock and Duran Duran.

The greatest English Group, that relatively few people have heard of. lol, Almost every track on every album and every single one was different. HOWEVER, the really Beautiful version is not this short one but the 6-minute version and on that one, you hear the "Choir" . Session musicians would come in and do these painstaking recordings for every instrument of an orchestra, one note at a time so that when they were all played together on a Mellotron it sounded like an orchestra. They then tried it with banks and banks of voices. The whole process took about a week. Three or four of them had to sing every note about 14 times, then put echo on it, which gave it that luxurious, velvety harmonic sound.

I'm amazed at how in many of these reaction videos, the people reacting just DON'T GET IT. Of course he's in love, that's obvious from the lyrics as a whole, and the fact he's repeatedly denying it, is what the song is all about: It's about how society sees strength in a man if he suppresses his emotions, and sees weaknesses in admitting to them and illustrates how we're brought up to be that way; (the 'big boys don't cry' interlude expresses that perfectly.)

HE WAS SO IN LOVE. 😂 This was a truly beautiful (multi layered) song as a joke to his wife. 😂 Beautiful melody, with the opposite meaning to how he felt. They had to lay each voice down over, and over (like Queen on Bohemian Rhapsody) to create the choir effect. No fancy technology back then. SUNG over and over. Result.. 😲 🔥 😢 ♥

Kevin Godley and Lol Cream were the pioneers of layering vocals and the female backing singer was the receptionist from the main desk of there studios in Stockport UK. There both from Manchester just around the corner from where I live. There is a documentary on the making of the song.

I have friends from Stockport England. And 10cc set up Strawberry studios there. It's now a museum. My friends had me go on Skype and I got to see inside. It was cool to see. Plus they showed me Jimmy Page's house. Robert Plant's. and John Bonham's Grave since they knew I am A Zeppelin fan. They even sent me a book called When Stockport Rocked. Plus numerous pics which I cherish. Thanks for the reaction Shawn and Mel. God Bless.

I rate 10CC as one of the top 5 British bands of the 70s. 3 outstanding writers and composers in Stewart, Godley and Creme.....the last 2 went on to produce some of the best pop videos ever. This track was the most requested on BBC Radio for several years....which says an awful lot for its power and longevity.

The line that I remember the most from this song is “big boys don’t cry”. I was a child when this song came out. That line was sampled in another song called “Mr. Jaws”.

I listened to this when it first came out. I absolutely loved this... even today, in my old age (65 yrs old). By the way, the message of this song is, he's trying to convince himself he's not in love, but in fact he is!

*This song is somebody who is very much in love.. so much so that he's trying like hell to deny how he feels. He's trying to talk himself out of being in love. We've all been there, it doesn't work lol*

Its the background singing of...big boys dont cry. that gives it away. But u have to listen intently to hear it. Its what we go thru in a breakup. The pains done alone.

Yes a great sound. I remember this song very well. It was 1975, and I was a 19 yr old United States Marine on Okinawa. So many memories, then I received the dreaded Dear John Letter. She said, "I'm not in Love." Broke my heart.

The thing that's really says he loves her, is that in the chorus he says 'I'm not in love, it's because....' and the sentence ends there. Obviously that's just my opinion, and throughout the song he gives reasons for the picture on the wall etc. But for me personally, that half finished sentence says it all xxx

Two members of 10cc Godley & Crème went on to do their own music and then got into making music videos. They made some of the earliest and very best taking full advantage of the technology as it appeared. They did the video for a certain song you may have heard of; every Breath you take.

I have always thought this song was his inner struggle to not want to be in love but being totally in love. He is in denial. Haha. I think these are the things he is telling himself not her so much. They have great harmonies and he is a beautiful singer.
