I'm planning my next workstation. I've built a TrueNAS server, so onboard storage is not a principle worry. My NVMe needs will be, OS and Programs, Cache, Samples and Delivery. That's 20 PCIe lanes to start with + GPU, Audio/Video Capture and 10GbE. This sees me looking at high end MB and CPU. Generally, one cannot experience any real world speed performance, because they are already ridiculously fast. I do love the idea of combining NVMe's, but CPU speed and lots of RAM are more important to me. More than 8-10 cores is a waste.

Are you doing a video on the last WWDC and will there much changes on the open core Sequoia install when compared to the open core Sonoma install, does it look like a complete update or a feature spec bump? I would like to know if I could install it on my trash can ?

I’m still composing my thoughts on WWDC - but I might make a video if I have something of value to share. It will take a little while for Sequoia to become available on OpenCore. At the moment I’m not aware of any reason why it won’t happen and be usable by older Macs.

at what read/write speed do you reckon the diminishing returns ought to start manifesting itself?

It depends on the workflow and how disk performance may be constrained by other factors. Outside of file copies, and with latest gen hardware, I’d say that once you get above ~3GB/sec the performance gains are less noticeable. That’s just my experience and your mileage may vary.

I have a thunderbolt enclosure with a 4tb wd nvme installed for accessing my photo archive , it is extremely fast on my M1 macbook pro. Should I buy buy a future M4 macbook would I see any speed increases. Would the bottle neck be the controller or operating system or software. The nvme rated upto 7200mbs but I'm only achieving a fraction of that. In the future I should have instantous access with no pause in processing. I'm happy as it is but future tech will only be faster, or will I encounter slight pauses I wonder.

Realistically you’ll never get much more than half the advertised speed due to Thunderbolt overheads.

Would love to see this compared to the Macs, which also have RAID built into the operating system.
