    I bought an old MacBook Air from Backmarket and am quite happy with it. It came looking almost new and the battery was at 90%. They even give you a 1 year warranty. Impressive for a 2015 Macbook Air. I hope to get about 3 years out of it and I paid $176 incl tax.

    I came here because I was going to find an easy answer to a Mac pro that I was looking at and unfortunately I'm nearly 10 minutes into the video and you haven't actually gotten to whether or not thunderbolt 3 works or thunderbolt 3 dog works. I mean yeah, thunderbolt 4 but you're spending way too much time talking about stuff that just doesn't work and not enough time getting to actually the stuff that does work. I mean come on it's 10 minutes in and we still don't have any answers to the original question

    Running a 2TB SSD 16GB RAM M1 iPad Pro with Magic Keyboard and Apple Pencil, next to a 2TB 24GB RAM M2 Mac Air, I can see and feel just how much 'snappier' the iPad is in almost EVERYTHING. The MacBook Air just seems SLOOOOOOOOOW, when side-by-side with the iPad. The only couple of tasks that the MacBook Air can do better are TERMINAL (CLI)-BASED WORKFLOWS and VIRTUAL MACHINE-based workflows. I know that I can use the iSH app on the iPad for terminal tasks, BUT it is a cut-down experience with simple commands like 'traceroute' being curtailed and yielding no helpful results (on iPad). Of course, I can use Kali Linux, Windows, and Mac OS on the MacBook Air -- all of which look and feel far slower (on the MacBook Air) than iPadOS-based apps on the iPad. So, my optimum workflow is to have a big screen (50inch with 4K @120Hz) above a MacBook Air, next to an iPad Pro with Magic Keyboard, etc. This gives me the ability to control the iPad from the Mac trackpad and use the big screen to share items using shared clipboard. So, the duplication comes in with the two keyboards and trackpads (MBA + iPad Pro with Magic Keyboard). Would ONE DEVICE THAT DOES ALL INCLUDING TOUCH be better? I'm actually not sure as the M1 iPad Pro both looks and feels so much faster than the MacOS based MacBook Air (sitting next to it) AND the iPad also gives me a useful second screen that I find very helpful. My argument is based upon the CURRENT SOFTWARE CAPABILITIES. If iPadOS were able to be run side-by-side on the same machine as macOS (perhaps, in a separate partition, or even in a high performing Virtual Machine) AND NOT SLOW DOWN the current version of iPadOS, I think that would be great. But, compromising the current version of iPadOS (i.e. slowing down the user experience by adding more weight and heft to the codebase in order to look and act more like macOS), that would be undesirable, in my view.

    Hi, currently have a 2013 iMac 27" (on my left) and a 2015 iMac 5K 27" (straight ahead). I often 'connect' the 2013 iMac in TDM to use both screens together. My new job will force me to have a 'locked down' windows laptop (13" or 15") - likely to be placed on the right side of my desk. 1). I really want to be able to connect this 'locked down' windows laptop to my 5K iMac. Allowing me to switch between remote working and personal / home use. 2). And still be able to use the 2013 iMac in TDM to use both screens together. Being able to use speakers, webcam, mac wireless keyboard and mac trackpad. If that is not possible. 3). Could I replace the 2013 iMac with a Apple Studio Display (straight ahead) and still be able to connect both the iMac 5K (moved to the left) and this 'locked down' windows laptop to the Apple Studio Display. Any help would be really useful.

  • @ConstantGeekery
    @ConstantGeekery6 күн бұрын

    If I’ve understood correctly, you want to connect both a 2015 5K iMac and a Windows laptop to a Studio Display - presumably so you can easily switch between the two? The Studio Display has a single input, so this would require swapping the cables. The Windows laptop will need to have DisplayPort over USB-C support. The 2015 5K iMac is not officially supported, since it is equipped with Thunderbolt 2, not Thunderbolt 3. You likely can connect using Apple’s Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2 adapter, and a TB2 cable, however you might find you are limited by GPU in the iMac. Can it run two 5K displays? 5K resolution is a huge amount of pixels (almost 80% more than 4K) and is pretty demanding. You might find it only works at 4K resolution. Another problem you will face is when the Studio Display needs an update - it can only be updated by an officially supported Mac, and I’ve heard tales of the display becoming unusable in that scenario.

    I wish they would do something similar to the Samsung Dex, it’d be nice to get more functionality. Seems like they’re towing the line with the keyboard and M chips but they’re limiting it’s functionality… the hardware could support something better they just won’t provide the necessary software for it.

    I assume you have tried all the ports and checked the cable and the monitor. If you're sure the cable and the port on the monitor are both good, try the following: Shut down the Mac. Remove the power cable and wait 60 seconds before plugging it in again. Plug the mini displayport cable into the bottom left Thunderbolt port. Switch on the Mac whilst holding OPTION+COMMAND+P+R on the keyboard (to reset the PRAM).

    @@ccedraro3878 it would be unusual for the display output to stop working if the Thunderbolt ports still work. I would focus my attention on the monitor and cables. I think it might be made by Startech.

    Just got one for $180 to replace a ACEMAGICIAN MINI PC. The PC was a nice little computer, but being limited to Windows really didn't work out for me. Plus because the components in the MINI PC were too closely put together, the headphone port started buzzing a lot for no reason at all. Don''t really need it to do video editing or music processing, so it should work fine for me for browsing etc. 16GB RAM, 500 GB SSD. Upgradable to 128GB RAM, 1-2TB SSD, 8-core CPU. Pretty sure I can get to Sonoma as well through the Open Core Legacy Patcher. Plus it's cute as hell. Like it better than the cube. Way more useful than my iMac G3 iLamp, which also looks good on my desk.

    I'm planning my next workstation. I've built a TrueNAS server, so onboard storage is not a principle worry. My NVMe needs will be, OS and Programs, Cache, Samples and Delivery. That's 20 PCIe lanes to start with + GPU, Audio/Video Capture and 10GbE. This sees me looking at high end MB and CPU. Generally, one cannot experience any real world speed performance, because they are already ridiculously fast. I do love the idea of combining NVMe's, but CPU speed and lots of RAM are more important to me. More than 8-10 cores is a waste.

    Another use case I would like to know; older iMacs (up until the 2011) that have thunderbolt 1 (10 Gbps), and next to that there's only USB v2. I'd like to connect a faster erxternal drive through the thunderbolt port, but it doesn't seem to be possible, except through a Kanex Thunderbolt to eSATA + USB 3.0 Adapter. Any info on that ?

  • @ConstantGeekery
    @ConstantGeekery12 күн бұрын

    Depends how you do it. If you do a fresh install, the partitions will be done as part of the install process. If you clone an existing smaller drive, you'll need to resize (grow) the main partition afterwards.

    It's rather crazy to look at this once magnificent beast of a workstation with a price tag that put it firmly out of reach of us mere mortals... and then run GB6 out of curiosity and see that my 7800X3D scores 2673 in single core and 15 162 in multi-core. I have to admit though, the Dust Bin still looks sexy and is in my opinion one of the coolest Mac designs ever!

    I have a thunderbolt enclosure with a 4tb wd nvme installed for accessing my photo archive , it is extremely fast on my M1 macbook pro. Should I buy buy a future M4 macbook would I see any speed increases. Would the bottle neck be the controller or operating system or software. The nvme rated upto 7200mbs but I'm only achieving a fraction of that. In the future I should have instantous access with no pause in processing. I'm happy as it is but future tech will only be faster, or will I encounter slight pauses I wonder.

  • @ConstantGeekery

    It depends on the workflow and how disk performance may be constrained by other factors. Outside of file copies, and with latest gen hardware, I’d say that once you get above ~3GB/sec the performance gains are less noticeable. That’s just my experience and your mileage may vary.

    It already has failed. And thankfully it was replaceable in my 2015 MacBook Air. It was dead after 6 years of use and 1-2 years just laying on the shelf. Some people will say "it was past its lifetime anyway". I disagree. That's for the owner to decide, not anybody else. I'm squeezing out a few more years for simple tasks and am quite happy with that. If my $3500 M1 dies after 6 years like that … it'll be my last Apple laptop, that's for sure.
