AppleCare - Useful Insurance, or another Apple Tax?

Ғылым және технология

Is AppleCare just another way to siphon money from your bank account to Tim Cook? Or is it a useful product to protect your expensive Apple devices? In this video I talk about my recent experience getting my Studio Display repaired, and consider when it's a good idea to buy AppleCare insurance.

My 15" mid 2015 MBP had a delaminated screen battery and keyboard replaced. The screen and battery/jkeyboard were at different times. In both cases they sent a packing box, shipped it to their Texas repair facility and had it back in my hand at the front door in three days. As the process was taking place they kept me informed by a text every time anything of significance happened - arrivals, departures, beginning and end of repair. The speed, attention to detail and quality of work was impressive. I 100% agree with your recommendation.

Some very interesting insights here! I'm going to be honest, AppleCare+ on the Mac has been a life saver a couple of times. 2 of my new M1 Max 16" models I'd got at launch sustained water damage whilst travelling back from a business trip (my water bottle burst in my bag). I'd only needed to pay £229 for each Mac compared to over £1500 worth of repairs. Therefore in my view for the more expensive computers, it's definitely worth having it for peace of mind.

I just got the Air M3 15", I also have an M2 iPad Pro I bought last year. A couple of years ago I bought a used iPhone 10. I have apple care for the iPad and air but non for the phone. I will be upgrading to a iPhone 15 sometime this year as the battery is going on the 10 and I can no longer update. I will add apple care to that as well. For me, its just peace of mind and that is worth more than the actual cost!

My 2020 Intel Macbook Pro suddenly had random shutdown issue after 2 years and they couldn't see battery issues. When they found out i have AppleCare+ they offered a replacement M2 and refunded the prorated AppleCare+ fee left on the device so I can buy a new one.

What happens is that the bugs, or eggs which later hatch, get into the display during the manufacturing process - they then crawl around and often die on the display itself. In my time with Apple gear I've seen quite a number of displays like this. It all started around 2012 with the introduction of the thinner iMacs with the glued on display.

I had the same experience with my iMac 2015 and Apple replaced the screen, there mush have been about 6 or 7 of them behind the LCD, that same thing happened to with my LG4K screen at the same time and they did not want to know, Apple care was definitely worth having.

I had something with my 2012 iMac when it was recalled for a replacement hard drive I noticed some weird water mark type patterns on the screen on pure white diagnostic screen. Apple replaced free of charge. That’s why I’m loyal to them.

Great video. Most of the time we don’t need AppleCare to get good service. Everything is relative! Apple customer service is outstanding compared to my nightmare experiences with other manufacturers. So many others are absolute trash. Manufacturers blamed problems on the software and Microsoft said it was the Manufacturer. Do not mention Microsoft’s sketchy CS $25 fee. If the store I purchased my device from did not help me, manufacturer support was nonexistent. It’s been a few years since it all boiled over into my decision to buy a Mac but I am not willing to chance whether PC manufacturers have gotten any better. AppleCare covers issues outside of Apple’s responsibility and I’m not sure I agree such a freakish occurrence was a build quality issue.

Reading the comments - many say - "ah it only cost me $49 or $229" but keep in mind a MacBook Pro 3 year warranty (which is really just an additional 2 years if I'm correct cause you have 1 year included minus accidental with your purchase) regardless its $279 for MBP in USA plus your deductible which I just checked $99 for screen or external issues. $299 for accidental damages. Which means you're really paying upon first use $378 for screen damage and $578 for 1st accidental cause you have to factor in what you've paid upfront for the coverage initially $279. Incidentally, if you never use the insurance you've spent an additional $279 on your computer. So how much is it to replace the screen if you DONT have apple insurance? And how is that weighed against your CHANCE of breaking the screen? etc (depends on your usage) BUT don't think it just cost you $99 to replace that screen when you had an accident. Yes, at the time of the accident, but in total your net worth was really $378

An actual “bug” in the system. Of course the origin of that term of art is the original digital computer ENIAC at the University of Pennsylvania which would frequently fail due to actual insects infiltrating the electronics.

I've used Macs since the 1980s and have never purchased AppleCare on any of my Apple products. And I've never needed the paid AppleCare service. Apple has replaced lots of motherboards for me from recalls and the free AppleCare. On the Studio, it's really a computer as it has RAM, CPU, SSD and would need ventilation so you can't really seal it up. Insects are a general problem if you can't remove the screen yourself. Other potential problems are condensation. If you are in a very humid environment, then you can get condensation on the inside of the screen. When the water runs down the inside, it can result in some streaking as there can be dirt that's pulled down with the water. I don't have a Studio Monitor but I have backup monitors that I can use in a pinch if something goes wrong with my production monitors.

I wouldn’t buy a Mac display. The computers are great but the new displays are not that good. The old ones were great. I still have a 24 inch Cinema Display which I still use. I have a MacBook Air which I didn’t buy Apple care for, and the screen cracked, so I just claimed on my house insurance. I should go d have got AppleCare. I have it on everything else now, except my Apple studio which is covered by the free 3 year Costco guarantee.

What happens if i get the insect inside, buy apple care and after a week o phone them: hey look i got a insect in my computer/display? Also can you quit apple care or its a minimal thing how much you have to be subscribed to apple care to benefit for a repair?

  • @ConstantGeekery

You have a limited window to purchase AppleCare from time of buying the device. You can pay for it annually (or monthly on phones) and cancel any time, but once cancelled you can't reactivate it. If you pay annually, you can keep it going for as long as you own the device. If you have an active plan, whether it's just been set up or not, you can claim on it.

Wasn’t this fault immediately noticeable from the day you bought it? If so then you should have been able to get it repaired regardless of Apple care, no? I thought the only benefit of getting Apple care is what happens after 1 year of ownership. Surely it doesn’t matter whether you’re a business or a consumer, a manufacturer fault is a fault and you should have been able to get it resolved. The other benefit I suppose of AC is how the repair is handled. But when I had a fault with my dell monitor a few years ago, I got an AC like repair service and it came with a 3 year guarantee without having to pay anything extra. In fact, when the fault occurred, its was old enough to not be repairable because of unavailable replacement parts, so they just gave me a brand new equivalent model, can’t get better than this. So to me AC is an Apple tax, just my opinion though.

It was a brand new display in perfect order. It's now over a year old. In the UK, the contract exists between the purchaser and seller, not the manufacturer. Consumer law is brilliant, but business sales are governed by different rules. Yes, you can usually work things out, but the time and stress are a factor. AppleCare also allows you to handle it by post, whereas two trips to my nearest Apple Store would cost more in time and expense than the AppleCare premiums.

yes, you SHOULD buy Apple Care. Unless you just love giving away your money. Would you rather pay $29 to fix your phone or $650 to fix it? most people will pay for garbage ass assurian insurance and they are a scam. Apple Care gives you new parts or new devices when stuff goes wrong. if you can't afford apple care, buy windows and android.

I don't like how they build the products with such limited shelf-life. Nothing is built to last anymore, and as a result you keep having to pay insurance on top of everything you buy, especially electronics. This planned obsolescence is more than a headache!

That is a very good point about Apple care but of course you will be paying out £119 for three years for the monitor and £399 for a MacBook for three years. So it starts to really add up. As a non business consumer I couldn’t really afford AppleCare and I did get my MacBook Pro (Intel) replaced when the motherboard died just out of warranty under consumer law. It cost me £35 to send it back to the Apple re seller, who repaired it. But if it had just been a ‘bug’ in the screen maybe I couldn’t have done that. My point is it is quite expensive, maybe too much for many of us; but probably sensible to have AppleCare. But would we do better to put that money in a high interest account and use it for a repair if needed or keep the money if not?

as expected. first, you should not have had a bug, literally a bug, in your screen in the first place. second, it should have been cleaned under warranty for the first 2 years. by the consumer laws of eu. ah sorry you are not in the eu. but overall, if the problem is not as a result of your own fault, you should not pay to correct it.

I am clearly not an Apple Fanboy, or a fanboy of any description, as anyone who has watched any of my content will know. Much of it is edited on PC. I use Windows as much as Mac and I regularly speak out against fanboyism. I also have criticised Apple whenever I've felt that they deserve it... which is often. I did not defend 8GB at all. In fact, I have ALWAYS recommended 16GB minimum with Apple Silicon ever since the early days of our M1 testing. I was the channel speaking out against 8GB when all the other KZread outlets were busy telling the world that you could do everything on an 8GB M1 Mac. I have specifically and frequently called Apple out on their base specs. But, since I'm not a mindless fanboy, I can also see that basic computer users can get by just fine with 8GB. I present facts and informed opinion based on my own testing, rather than simply bleat out whatever is the tech soundbite flavour of the week and parrot the opinions of others. I'm not a consumer - I'm buying for business, as I clearly stated in the video. UK consumer law is 7 years, not 2. Business contracts are governed by different legislation. Thrips getting into displays is actually not unusual it would seem, regardless of the brand. Monitors need to vent heat, so there are openings, and tiny insects can wander inside where it's nice and warm.
