    The notes: How to create and maintain income security: 1. Become indispensable. How? 👇🏾 - Get really good at what you do by investing time and energy into mastering your craft - Schedule practice time for what you're learning without interrupting your routine - Isolate issues to see your problem areas whilst learning - Dedicate yourself to this process consistently - Find creative ways to generate a quick feedback loop for what you're learning 2. Work towards financial freedom. How? - Plan for the worst-case scenario / the unexpected - Instability career-wise (freelancing) can teach you how to be frugal - Learn to be conservative with how you spend what you make - Start an emergency fund and don't touch it unless it's serious - e.g. medical, late on rent, etc. - This fund will grow and this money will give you padding/runway/freedom - And this will allow you to pursue what you love/care about, say no to what you don't, and live an awesome life Parting shot: - Get extremely good at what you do - Try to improve every day - Invest back into yourself - Be smart about your finances - Put money away for the rainy days - Build up as much financial runway as you can - Just start Happy weekend folks :)

    Sleep is also huge. During NREM sleep (non rapid eye movement) the brain forms new neural connections. I was trying to beat this difficult boss in a video game at the end of the day. I was getting better and learning his moves, but I just kept dying and getting frustrated. I eventually gave up and went to bed. When I woke up in the morning, I beat him first or second try. It was a night and day difference with how much easier it felt in the morning. This same situation happened to me so many times, especially with learning guitar. Consciously knowing this really helps me with motivation for learning new things. Getting a good night’s sleep after practice really rings true the message of “I am better than I was yesterday.”

    I remember when I first started looking for jobs, just finished high school and I needed a job to help start paying for college. It got to a point where every other day I would have applied and submitted my resume to 3 jobs. After 3 months of searching I had applied to 72 jobs, receiving 6 interviews, and a lot of emails saying I’m not qualified for mostly “starting seasonal positions.” It was terrifying. That was four years ago, and I always look back and think how grateful I am to work for a company now that supports me during these times. I’m currently utilizing the resources of the company to educate myself and learn how these skills can be applied to my own passions. I’m juggling a lot, but this video just gave me that push I’ve been needing. Thanks!

    Strangely enough the most freedom I've found in my adult life was during the times I was most disciplined and strict with my regime and schedule. I find that discipline can breed freedom to a certain extent and within a certain context but it can also become a double edged sword if you let that discipline become your new escape to an unhealthy degree. For me its just the balancing act more than anything and trying to make small strides and then find my balance. Then take another step and adjust to the balance and sometimes I have to take a small step back. The large leaps into new practices and ideas can sometimes be a good kickstart though too.

    I must admit, you lost me around the 2:30 mark. For starters, I work in a minimum wage retail job. I've perfected my job there but at the drop of the hat, I'm replacable. They won't let me change shift patterns, despite me having to give my notice - so I'm leaving after a year and a half. I'm a super dedicated employee, I work a good 25 hours a week on overtime - I am positive/upbeat and friendly - I'm known for encouraging everyone. I've a record that showcases my passion, good time keeping and reliability.... And yet... I am replacable and will be replaced without so much as a thank you. In creative terms, I guess what you said could apply - for the lowly workers like myself - that really isn't something people care about with us. Working behind the scenes on what I really should be doing, Media - then yes. But that point there, just really zoned me out as a retail worker.

  • @indiemingling

    @indiemingling

    3 жыл бұрын

    I understand what you're saying here and it's an unfortunate truth. Unless you have some highly specialized (technical) skill, you're likely replaceable. You should strive to always be better, so at the very least, you're not the first to be replaced or laid off, for example. However, you should be working on your ability to learn new skills, which could range from hobbies to formal education (courses). That way, should you have to find a new job, you're adaptable enough that it's relatively easy to find something else, whether that be another retail gig or something else entirely. In other words, you'll be confident enough to adapt to a new workplace.

  • @FixItOnTheWay

    @FixItOnTheWay

    Good point. No matter how skilled you are, you're still dispensable. Even high tech companies that require a lot of full-time skilled labour, do not like their employees to be too good. They actively get rid of employees who become indispensable. It's a financial liability to become dependant on linchpin employees. The corporate world would rather keep long term employees who are underachieving cogs in a wheel, because they are less threatening. That's why robots and artificial intelligence are so attractive. Even better is to gain a monopoly in the market place so you can make crappy products with bad employees and maintain total control of both the employees and consumers. The key to long term survival is not financial security. It's about skills, mindset, work ethic. So you can lose it all and start over with nothing. Software is way more important than the hardware.

    i don't want to judge or anything, i just want to say how outrageous 25 hours of overtime sound to my german ears. wtf is wrong with america and the "WoRk EtHiC" there honestly. that amount of work is illegal here. your employer would go to jail. but i've worked retail here too and it sucks. i would definitely suggest to do literally anything else but retail. you'll always be replacable and you'll always be treated like shit. you're basically just destroying yourself. idk if you have any other option but if you have, get on it asap and save yourself :(

Although putting in the hours is very important, what really matters is "deliberate practice". An interesting take on a traditional 9 to 5 job: In a traditional job, your boss is equivalent to your client in the freelance sector. People tend to have a false sense thinking that being an entrepreneur means taking job security into your own hands. If you screw up in your job, you are fired, same for if you screw up in a freelance project. When you work in a traditional job, you eliminate the stress and worry of having to search for the next gig or project, while having a stable but restraint income. Being an entrepreneur, the income is only limited by how well your business is managed. The only thing that job seekers do wrongly is going into a job that is unsuitable or working in that job only for the sake of making a living.

    Mmmm I don’t love the 10,000 hour rule in the discussion of job security.... I’m not sure if telling people to “just work harder” is the right mindset, especially in the climate America is facing right now. Truth is everyone is dispensable to an employer. 🤷🏼‍♀️ This “grind” mindset is pretty opposite of the “minimalist” “simple” and “slow” living framework that I used to resonate with in your older minimalism content. I like the productivity content but I also think we need to ask ourselves what the hustle is all for sometimes too. Hope you’re doing well. Remember to rest ✨
