    As a communications engineer, this device that was shown in the video could probably be shrunk atleast 10x. It has a unnecessarily huge battery as well as a lot of components that wouldn't be needed in a professional design. Since chess is an 8x8 matrix, you can develop an effective code to communicate in a shorter amount of vibrations than morse code (3 bits for column and 3 bits for row, the number would be received as binary that you convert to decimal in your head for example), and perform all the stockfish processing somewhere else. All you really need on your body is a receiver, a module that can vibrate, a tiny battery and a small microprocessor....

    One simple solution to the problem you’re presenting with processing being done outside: Just put a delay on the livestream for about 10 minutes or maybe even longer. That way, anyone watching from the outside would be giving moves with a huge delay so that is no longer feasible to cheat that way.

    Addressing some misunderstandings: - It's dubious how well a flat device in your shoe that isn't activated till after passing security could be detected or distinguished from metal spines commonly found in formal shoes especially with just a wand - Component improvement, circuit optimization, casing and shape fitting, feature reduction, etc could easily reduce the size by a few factors from what looks like a film container - Input can be made by pressing a single button in the device via squeezing, tapping, etc or someone watching the livestream could make inputs Remember you don't need to communicate every whole move to a strong player to significantly change results. These aren't casuals who don't understand chess. They can play pretty well without an engine. It's not about being perfect and guaranteeing victory every game, losses can become draws and draws can become wins with small amounts of help: - Just saying what type of piece contains the optimal move can reduce a ton of mental calculation - If there's delay in the livestream, as long as critical moves are sent within time control you can flip results - Even without critical moves, you can anticipate in preparation when complexity explodes. A single optimal move at those points can hugely tilt things in your favor downstream. - Preparation can be significantly augmented by storing anticipated lines without a live engine

    you could actually easly signal to by cutting out the piece moved and using 2 devices. since this can be shrunk my first idea would to fit to into the two of each shoe left is abc right is 123. all you would need to tell the player is the spot they need to put a piece at that level of play it would be easy to figure out what piece needs to be put there.

    This is a P.S.A. The most common metal component that is the largest metal component that I can think of that is commonly present in a shoe is called a shank, and not called a spine. I can’t remember something that is called a spine being commonly cobbled into shoes that is made out of metal.

    You wouldn't even need the device to have a receiver or obtain information from an outsider. Since Stockfish is self-contained on the module, you could add an additional input module in the form of squeezes. Inserting the device a certain somewhere, you could designate squeezing signals to start the game, identify a particular piece, and input where that piece moved.

    First of all, he showed a dev board which has tons of stuff the final product wouldn't need. Second of all, the size could obviously be smaller just by the fact that the individual components (the ones you can't really make smaller without compromises) weren't assembled in a way that optimized it for any specific use (if you wanted to ingest it for example you'd make it longer and taller so the 18650 battery and the full size dev board don't both contribute to diameter which you have to swallow). Even if you played Chess in a faraday cage you could also divied it into multiple parts if you needed something smaller parts for ingesting and then have the different parts (say one for input and one for computing the best moves) talk to each other via radio or even use blood vessels for signaling (latter being harder to detect if FIDE starts using faraday cages and radio signal detection). Jamming would be illegal unless they do make a faraday cage good enough to block the jamming inside the building etc, but plenty of EMP safe places exist already (thanks Cold War!) where they could do the matches.

    The device could be way smaller. He used an arduino, which is a general purpose microcontroller which has a lot of io and other components which aren't necessary for this specific application. If you were to have a custom pcb made specifically for a device like this, it could be much smaller and similar size reductions could be made for the other components as well. Again, he was making a device as a proof of concept, but with a bit more money and time I'd imagine you could end up with a device that is half the volume or even less. As for the device requiring a connection and all of the people commenting about faraday cages or other methods to interrupt that connection, I think you are missing the point a bit. My understanding was that the web interface and connection was only used to input moves to the device, and all of the computation was done locally. If that is the case, all that would need to be done to make the cheating device fully self-contained would be to create some way to input moves into the device itself. I think this is why the point of squeezing it somehow was brought up in the video, and I'm sure with time it would be possible to figure out a reliable input method. TLDR: Pretty much all of the drawbacks of the prototype could be addressed to make a very difficult to combat cheating device.

    @LostintheWoods I think the thinking with the squeezing method is you'd have some sort of code to input moves based on a sequence of squeezes similarly to how the moves are output with a sequence of vibrations. Most men can control their penis using the pelvic floor muscles.I would attach a wire that senses electrical impulse in the penis to the device that is inside the cave. Or even better, have the wire taped inside the cave walls. Since the pelvic floor muscle also acts on the cave entrance. Then it's just a matter of giving coordinates and type of piece. A game would look like this: Device asks what are you playing with 1 long vibration. You reply " black" with 2 "inputs" Device asks for opponent move with 3 short vibrations. You reply "pawn a 3" with 1 input for pawn, pause, 1 input for a, pause, 3 inputs for 2. The pause should be something like 2 seconds. It was stopped mainly because the school is situated in the middle of the city right next to the town hall which got jammed as well every time as the radius seems to create interference even hundreds of meters away, not enough to stop phone calls but enough to significantly worsen the quality. Any sufficiently strong jamming device to stop communicating inside a large hall will have an effect on nearby buildings which is the main problem. From a legal standpoint you probably can get a license to use it inside of your own property but unless you are in the middle of nowhere or in a bunker you will always interfere with neighbours making it illegal.

    Imagine for a second... you adopt the mindset of a power bottom in training. You could have one of these in for hours like training to acclimate to a super saiyan transformation. Then... you get to the tournament. You've practiced playing chess with your bottom so much that while your opponent is playing you, you're playing the equivalent of dance dance revolution or guitar hero with your sphincter. I imagine Magnus saw this going on in front of him and said ... "fuck this shit! i'm out". Seems ... pretty accurate to the scene described ... lmao!!!!!

    It is actually incredibly easy to put a small arduino or raspberry pi board inside an elevated shoe and encode it so it buzzes a move. It takes 3 bits (buzzes) to encode rank, file and piece. You can do one type of buzz for 1 and another for 0. So it takes 9 buzzes to send the move to the player which can take just to be certain like 2 seconds per buzz. You can send a whole move in 18 seconds which is more than enough for a classical game.

    Best place to put it would be your shoe. Could have one taped to each foot or inserted in the soles. Left indicates row and right is column. All you need is to buzz the original square and then the square to move. For example a4 to e8 - (1 buzz on right foot, 4 buzzes on the left) followed by 5 right and 8 left. You don't have to insert it where the sun don't shine if security is that weak. Easy peasy.

After a minute, someone gives the actual answer (911 calls blocked). Then all of a sudden people all come to the conclusion and everyone starts writing the answer as if they knew.

    This was done in like 4 hours or something. Feel like if anyone with a background in this stuff gave it some actual time it would be very small and much much better (which I think he said). As someone who has messed around with this sort of stuff just for fun, I see this as just a rough prototype and know that it could get way smaller. My only issue with this is I don't know if it could get past a metal detector.

  • @epmcgee

    @epmcgee

    It's a prototype using bulky and cheap components. There are much smaller components that could be purchased and used that perform the same way, so it's just a matter of this guy mocking it up with the more expensive and smaller parts in mind. If the metal detector is good quality, probably not. The ones used at the OTB tourney where Hans beat Magnus were cheap and designed for large metallic objects.

    If you'll notice, before the epoxy, he's using a battery shaped cell of some kind, I feel like you could easily use a flat lithium cell and it would probably fit in a shoe no problem. That said, I think playing matches in a large faraday cage (and as another commenter noted, is quite the expense) is probably the only viable solution to this if external input is required to get the state of the board.

    It can also be that a third person is the one analyzing the games with an engine then he sends the top engine moves through vibration. In that case, it can really be made way smaller than the one shown in the video. Heck it can be hidden in any part of the body as long as u feel the vibrations, it makes the anal bead somewhat viable lmfao. Adding to this, they can also buy the same brand of metal detectors fide is using and make preparations before hand so that no natter what searching/scanning they do, they'll never find it.
