Tbh I kinda subscribe to the “enjoy your life” mindset these days because I just look at house prices and I’m like “this is impossible” and my family doesn’t mind me staying with them (I help pay for utilities and stuff in return). I just feel happier than having to worry about that stuff, it may not be a good mindset but there isn’t much I can do at the moment.

@@BarnabusTheSerf it's very common in america too. the difference is people are doing it until like their 30's quite frequently now. Before it just took a few years and you could save enough to move out. That isn't the case anymore and is very rapidly becoming even harder. A lot of people simply won't ever be able to build up to living independently unless you call just waiting for your parents to die and inheriting their house "building up" lol.

I live in Saskatchewan which is a unique place in being both the birthplace of western populist socialism and one of the major homes of modern right wing conservative thought in Canada. We're one of the only places on the continent to have had truly socialist governments in power for decades, we currently have a more American style right wing government in power, and we've had everything in between from more moderate modern version of the NDP to the Liberals to the Conservatives. Based on Saskatchewans history, the lived experiences of the older generations I've talked to, and on my own life experiences I think inflation is speeding up around the world because governments are trying to have an unplanned economy like a right wing free market society while spending on social programs and infrastructure like a left wing socialist society. When Saskatchewan did that in the past after the Tommy Douglas era and because of pressure caused by the cold war and anti socialism views it lead to economic downturn and extreme government debt. Imo trying to have it both ways is supidity, not a compromise. These are two different systems for running a economy that are both viable on their own but do not function together. A right wing economy works by lowering taxes and cutting social spending so that the private sector is encouraged to invest in services that people want for their profit while a left wing economy works by nationalizing industries and creating crown corporations so the government can have direct access to the nation's revenue and they can spend it however they want. The weakness of the right wing system is that it relies on business leaders being willing to work with the government to provide services and aid leading to more people going without them while the weakness of a left wing system is that it requires the people who have the skill to make policy to also be able to run a business and the consequences of a fool or a corrupt individual in government will be much greater financially with so much money under the government's control. A liberal economy on the other hand just doesn't work. They try to raise they same revenue a left wing economy has by taxing companies who by their nature must raise prices to maintain profitability and by taking loans which will burden the government. And in the case of a federal government they will print money causing it to devalue.

i hard disagree, respectfully. nothing against scanlon or stancil but the whole vibecession narrative feels SUPER out of touch. Real retail sales are down, there is already a white collar jobs recession (this will spread into wider economy as they spend less). Take a look at earnings from companies like NIKE, Uber, etc. that depended on white collar worker spending. They've been able to rise prices for 2-3 years and are now hitting a wall where they have to start cutting to keep market share - Nike surprise released bad earnings and dropped 20% in a day. The problems aren't in the open yet but they are real.
