This Guy Turned an Ambulance Into an Adventure Vehicle
Спорт
Overlanding rigs come in all shapes and sizes: they can be totally custom monster trucks or souped-up Subarus, and owners often go to great lengths to build the vehicle they want. Phoenix-area resident Bevan Walsh wanted a sturdy, self-contained rig but didn't want to sink a ton of money into it, so he went with a retired Freightliner FL60 ambulance. As Walsh explains in this video from the 2016 Overland Expo East, ambulances already have a lot of the systems in place that the overlanding crowd looks for, which makes them a great platform to build on.

I Just got the same vehicle from Miami Dade, just a 2001, Had a factory rebuilt Cummings engine installed in 2007. When I got it it had 29,000 engine miles and 210,000 chassis miles. Slowly doing my conversion in Maine. Good Luck on your travels.
I like the idea from a security stand point for traveling in Central & South America. It's nothing too flashy that catches the eye of someone with ill intentions, and you see tons of old U.S. service vehicles down there. I just got back from a road trip in Guatemala and safety and security will be a top priority. Safe travels.
I like the garage door opener on the drivers visor

I agree
That is a huge ambulance. Looks super comfy, but if anything breaks while they are south of the U.S.A they will have a heck of a time with repairs.

Yes, Frieghtliners of this video tage share a TON of parts with Fords. Additonally, many older medium duty trucks, busses, and ambos here in the USA travel to Mexico, Central and South America for second lives where they run them for decades more. I had to compete with a Mexican crew to buy my 2003 FC80 Freightliner
So cool
Is the folding couch-bed an off-the-shelf product? I also like the fact that ambulances have ready-made insulation, lighting, and storage.
Great job of repurchasing, inexpensively. ;-)
I've seen on KZread all kinds of conversions (bus, truck/topper, van, etc...) but several months back I saw an ambulance conversion with all of its built in systems (AC, electrical, Heating, insulated, etc...) and their built rugged, all's left to do is do some planning, maybe move stuff around and build the few things that make it useful, fits your needs and style. ;-) In short (Not!) if I was into camping, being away in nature, that would be the conversion I'd do something like yours. Your setup is a huge leap above other conversions, even a 4WD Ambulance. ;-)

*HUGE being the key word. I have an FC80 Freightliner here (FL60's brother). 5.9 diesel. Its too darn big for the backroads I wanna be on. To each there own. I think even my 1991 ford cutaway dually E350 might be a tad big. Also have standard high top van ambos ...likely that will be our preference. Even "singled out" rear tires on the dually E350 can't really be aired down well. . Think single track dirt roads .

That's a good point, size does matter. Thanks for the input.
Who did you get to insure the vehicle? I recently purchased a smaller one from a truck dealer in FL with intent to convert it, but am having problems finding someone to insure it during the conversion process.
I'd seriously like to own the same Freightliner ambulance, but living here in the United Kingdom, our fuel costs are horrendous (greedy Government [taxes]). It's bad enough keeping my humble 2009 petrol 3500cc V6 Nissan Elgrand 8 seater on the road as it guzzles fuel (it's a 350Z sports car engine in a van). I live in the wrong country for rugged trucks. Congratulations on your amazing vehicle though.
Army ambulance? Very cool. Low maintenance?
This looks like an Excellance Inc ambulance I probably built this one originally.
Very nice Rig, is it powered by a Cat Or Cummins?
I want one ....
Makes me wonder. There's an old ambulance like this one that's 4x4 for sale down the street from me. Hmm

I just purchased an ambulance. I love it
How does it handle in the dirt?
I'm curious, if it's not a rude question, can you give us a ballpark of what you paid for it ? And did you get it from an auction, direct sale from municipality, a dealer or individual ? I just hear so much range in prices from incredible steals to ridiculous many tens of thousands for the same exact thing practically. I'm just trying to get a sense of where to look for those incredible steals since I'm on a budget.
Mi sueño bueno Saludos desde chile
I am buying a 2013 International Terrastar Ambulance in a few days. Its a crew cab and ambulance rear.Any thoughts advice? Im converting it to an off-road camper
Is this truck 4x4?
What's your overall lenth?
color it black and it would really cool like those they use in SWAT team
I wonder how many people have died in the back of there!!

I was a paramedic. People don't usually die in the ambulance. You don't have them long enough. You can be transporting someone who you are doing CPR on, but "technically" they aren't dead until they are pronounced in the hospital. Another way to think about it, far more people were helped during a really shitty day in the back of that rig. That said, I would clean the fuck out of it.

That is why one should always hire a priest to do an exorcism before the conversion. If not, a witch doctor in South American will probably capture the spirits in a bottle for a fee if it is haunted. This will be a great fire pit-side story during their travel while showing off the bottle.
