Life On The Road In An Ex-Ambulance Camper

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

This week we give you a full tour of our ambulance camper (we call it our campulance) which we use travel and camp all over North America!
Support our show: / livingbig
We have plans in 2019 to do a full camper conversion on this ambulance, which is built on a 2008 Chevy C4500 and which was a fully working ambulance up until it was retired from service in 2017.In this pre-conversion tour, you'll see the ambulance as we bought her, as well as how we have been using it as a vehicle to tour with.
Read More: www.livingbiginatinyhouse.com...
Not only is our Campulance a home away from home, it's also a tow vehicle which we use to pull our tiny house around. We've installed a full tow package which means that we will be able to travel with both the tiny house, and the campulance together, or just take the camper for shorter excursions. For us, this ambulance camper is like living the vanlife dream. It's a great vehicle and has been an amazing home on the road.

You'd be hard pressed to find a 75K miles Duramax pickup for 15K, and this is a 4500 medium duty chassis. @I Know You're Right But you can find surplus deals but nice gems like this are pretty rare. Most places don't retire vehicles until after they've had a long service life, normally pushing 200k miles in something like this. The power train is rock solid, you'd be hard pressed to overload it, and it tows great. Not much more you need! I look forward to seeing the solar and bedding solutions they come up with.

Used ambulances are quite common on the used market. I have no idea why they're not more popular for conversions... they have all storage built-in, space for a bed, and a crew to work around it. The prices are right tho, since whole fleets need to be replaced every couple of years, and no one want used ambulances. You might wanna choose one without the original ambulance paint and symbols tho xD

@@livingbig Keep the blue color on it and get rid of any ambulance markings such as the snake. Also, remove the big ass horn on the hood and remove some of the warning lights. Maybe you could add a roof scoop on top to make it more aerodynamic due to the back half being so square. I mean, the camp-ulance has the aerodynamics of a barn door. Lol

OMG PLEASE keep the blue!!! Our units here in Canada look NOTHING like the one you have. It is beautiful and it would be a shame to see it covered or painted. I would keep it the way it is but I know you want to or maybe need to remove the star of life but maybe just remove or cover up the pin and snake and do something that works with the star and worry more about removing the markings on the rear of the unit. Just my 2 cents worth about the unit. Good luck and I look forward to seeing what you guys come up with!

put a skylight in the rear cabin. Ambulances make amazing reuse vehicles for all sorts of things. Big fleet units are always well maintained and a diesel is hardly even broken in at 75K miles :) I had one that I got for $500 and we gutted and put all wood paneling in along with a Maple hardwood floor. We built a drop down bed platform so that we could have a large bed, but one that would stow away when we wanted to move around and use the kitchenette or just hang out when the weather wasn't cooperating outside. Another nice addition would be a side awning so that you can cook and relax outdoors even in fowl conditions.

Your tires will now cost 300 to 500 each and you will need to go to a dealership or big rig tire shop. Brakes and engine work are much more expensive. Similar to a class A motor coach. The engine and trans are same as a 1 ton so more than regular vehicle but not in outer space like the Caterpillar engines in the coaches. Great buy!!!! I love it. I really enjoy your content. My suggestion is that you go in so the wall cavity over the bench area that you said you wanted to keep and do a Murphy bed. They are so convenient during the time you are not sleeping you can still entertain and use the bench like you want and then at night you pull your bed down and it can be a very nice bedroom for the 2 of you.sorry I'm too late with my idea but I just found this video. Love this idea! Never thought about an ambulance as a camper but it has so much potential! If you want to keep as much as possible from the Original interior I would install a bed that you can pull down from the backdoor. It would mean you cannot use it as an entrance anymore, but if the bed is down, you can still open it and when the bed is up against the door, you have the side door which you allready use as mean entrance and the entrance from front. Blankets and Pillows go in the sofa storage. Your kitchen counter idea is perfect I think and I would put a sink right where that drawer is. For cooking and heating use solar as much as possible. Looks identical to the Kodiak my old volunteer dept still has in service, except ours was purple where yours is blue. And no, (to Mary Ellen's comment) not all had a sink. Ours was a full-time emergency response rig. Those hand rails came in really useful when you were going from one end of the rig to the other for supplies while in motion. FYI: The lock on the fridge was there so that only paramedic and a-level EMT's had access to medications and certain supplies that b-level EMT's were not trained or allowed to administer. (which makes no sense, because if you only had a paramedic and a b-EMT on board, and the paramedic needed the b-EMT to get a controlled med for them, then the code lock becomes useless. Our med safe used a key...)

Oh, and since it was a recurring issue on our department's Kodiak, check to see if yours has the airbag suspension in the back. It was really useful to raise/lower the height of the rig, but ours always seemed to have reliability issues. If you don't have the air ride, don't worry about it. But if you do, its probably something you wont need in a camper, and you might want to look at converting it to a traditional setup before it flakes out on you. Also, keep in mind, mileage on fire service apparatus is pretty irrelevant. Our ambulance would idle for hours on end at a fire scene or on standby at events. Its not the odometer that counts, the important figure is engine hours.

@@livingbig I've built 2 shuttle bus campers, and used all the built in fiberglass walls and engineered flooring and built from that platform, make it like a modern yacht. I'm looking at a low mileage 95 Ford diesel 4x4 ambulance about the same size to convert. I'm going to use as much of the interior as possible since it so durable and easy to clean, just add accents to make it cool, modern and useful. The idea to use the tall compartment for a shower is excellent, I saw one ambulance camper that used the side stairwell for the shower area using a removable shower curtain and a drain in the corner of the aluminum step. Good luck on the build,it's a beautiful truck, makes me miss my 2011 Chevy shuttle camper I just sold .

9:11 i notice a bit of a gap between the long seat cushions and the wall. If you remove the backrest and maybe the big grey thing on top at 10:18 you could easily install a fold-down bed that could either rest on the seat cushions with a bit of additional support, or just go over the cushions without touching them. There's definitely enough horizontal floorspace for a walkway and bed.

Patrick Ozment it is called a captains chair. Chairs that sit on their own with armrests or individual adjustability that are not connected to a bench seat are called captains chairs. It doesn’t literally mean a chair for a captain. Any chair that’s not connected to a bench in a vehicle is called a captains chair.

I used to be an EMT, and have operated out of these Modular Style Ambulances, and the Stainless Steel Overhead Grab Bars are in place to assist you with getting into your turnout gear when enroute to an Accident Scene, they also come in handy when moving around to work on a patient during transport to the Hospital. The Bed can be made in a way that it could be folded up along the wall when not in use, and then dropped down when the 2 of you are ready to go to sleep.

It looks like it has a lot of potential. Ideas: You seem comfortable with a smaller bed, why not turn the double seater into a couch with interlocked slats that you can pull out (with it's own legs always resting on the ground) to make double the width of the current bench? Keep as much of the current furniture intact as possible (except for the seats). It's been made to be extremely sturdy and withstand the travelling, so it's unlikely you will get something as strong. Start with the seats and tabletops, because they make it look clinical. The rest is minimal, and will probably look awesome with some well-made wooden worktops. You can stick any artwork on the wall to make it look nice without having to replace wall material. See how you like it then and consider doing more. The weird outdoor closet could be an onboard shower if it .. oh I just rewatched and you already said so :)

NONE....... ZERO.... EEVVEERRY person transported in an "ambo" is kept alive. Mandatory action across USA. Heart is kept beating whole time no matter what. Ceasing keeping the body alive is only allowed in the Hospital by doctor's order. That's the rules... If someone is already dead they ARE NOT transported in an Ambo. Coroner has their own vehicle for that.... thus ambulances remain available for another life saving call and not tied up transporting the deceased.

coachgeo your stupid as shit, people die in ambulances all the time, often times patients are pronounced dead. Just because they are receiving cpr doesn’t mean that they are alive. Just because ambulances don’t go around picking up the deceased doesn’t mean that people don’t die in a vehicle that is meant for transporting and caring for people with serious injuries.

coachgeo Where are you getting your information? I’ve worked at my fire department for several years now and have seen many people die in transit, “ceasing to resuscitate” isn’t only allowed at a hospital, There are a tremendous amount of different scenarios that a patient can go through and unfortunately sometimes they’re complications mean they don’t make it to a hospital and you can’t just decide that they have to live until arrival. Don’t put information out there that comes out of your ass, thank you.

I say plenty I'm sure, but how many lives were also saved? How many babies first cries were heard in there? I look at the positive side of things and have never felt the slightest bit of evil while in my rig. BTW, this is my daily driver and it gets 18 mpg...
