I met CJ in a supermarket in Spain and it was great to see his van conversion. His converted a Sprinter Ambulance has everything you need and is a good example of a fully kitted out conversion. he has a toilet, a shower, hot water, a diesel heater and a wood burning stove plus a double bed, a TV and a fridge. (Not that he tends to use it all - but it can be nice to have).
In this video, CJ shows us how he converted the van and key elements of his design. Oh, he has a cute dog too!

    Sweet! I have an almost identical ambulance to convert when i get round to it, mines the same age but is super low mileage and has 4x4, I'll have to have a different layout internally though, i'm way to tall for that bed! Good to see one done though, makes mine seem more possible.

Then I switched my thinking to how many lives it might have saved 😊 I love what you have done with it. I smiled too at getting the roller out and painting it. All those people who need to get things resprayed, you put them to shame, well done you. Have a great trip with your gorgeous pup!

    Great van, really like the space. Some good thoughts on the conversion of your mental state also, from the 9-5 hussle and bussle to taking life slowly! Many people I've spoken to about the wood burner suggest that it becomes something that isn't used a lot, how many times does CJ use the burner and are there any undesired effects? Soot deposits around the van etc? I like the idea of the 'dry heat' as oppsoed to the butane burners, which has made me think alot about this option!

  • @ProjectAmber

    Vince Rees up until now iv used it nearly every night to be honest, the dust and soot isn't so bad, a weekly dusting of the van and I bought a flew cleaning brush for a monthly sweep. It has it's pros and cons like everything but out in the woods i can keep warm for free.

    You're right about the Carbon Monoxide Detector, it's going to sit in the ceiling, Carbon Monoxide is lighter than air. but a gas alarm should be on the floor. Propane is heavier than air. so those who say you're wrong may move their Carbon Monoxide Detector to the right place if they have any. but nice and clean build, very nice.

  • @Adiscretefirm

    @Adiscretefirm

    5 жыл бұрын

    CO is actually slightly heavier than air, but since it is almost always in a warmer, or moister stream when encountered (it is going to be from a combustion source, not a leaking tank of CO) it pretty evenly mixes in an enclosed environment. The most important thing is to follow the manufacturer suggestions about placement.

    @@Myjourneybeatingcancer CO molar weight is 28.01 g/mol, density 1.14 Kg/m(cubed), atmosphere 28.97 g/mol, density 1.225 Kg/m(cubed). CO is very slightly lighter and less dense than dry atmospheric air. With combustion-source CO it is usually warmer and moister than the atmosphere it is being introduced to and tends to mix thoroughly, especially in a space as small as an ambulance box. Levels 6 feet up and 6 inches up are going to be very close, and neither is going to vary much from a typical 2-3 foot bed height (most CO poisoning occurs while sleeping). As your link points out the most important thing is to follow manufacturer instructions, wall units need to be vertical and oriented per instructions, ceiling units are designed to be horizontally installed. You're wrong .

    Dickerson gas heater/stoves are not a wet heat. They are a marine grade stove for heating and are a 'closed' combustion system ... so dry heat. Absolutely perfect for vans/ambos/buses as no condensation. A bit pricey but worth it for the liveability factor and no dampness.

Also, I love the wood burning stove but I hear that on the little one's that you need to clean the stove pipe often because of the buildup of creosote which can block your stove/chimney pipe. Have you noticed this problem CJ? Check out Fy Nyth's channel because she talks about cleaning her small stove's pipe. Good luck and enjoy your journey.

    TWROC96 thanks dude. Yeah you're right it does get clogged so I bought a small chimney sweep brush and once a month it gets a quick brushing. Not as much of an issue as it seems.

    Nice conversion. What is the make, model and place to purchase the roof fan?

    That wide squared off space really makes a difference. This is the third Ambulance conversion video I've seen and the first with significant problems (electrical). It may be the other two were purposely built as an ambulance, not converted into one? Safe traveling. ;-)
