I started playing basketball in Germany more than 40 years ago. Sentences like "Germany beats Serbia" or "Germany wins against the USA", and likewise "Germany is basketball world champion" have only been formulated as utopia and wishful thinking in all these decades. As good as the current team obviously is, I could only believe in the title when it was realised.

As someone who grew up in germany i can tell this is all the conclusion of dirk nowitzkis sacrifice for the development of the sport of basketball in germany. All of the players from the wc team grew up in the early 2000 seeing that tall blonde guy playing some unusual sport somewhere over there in the US. He really made basketball cool in germany, put his money and the money of his sponsors into the infrastructure in german basketball and showed up for the sport with his face and name! Big congrats to Dirk for this championship-title too. Well done

@@KingHalik also true... in the end i would say the very professional and long term vision of the team structure of that decade designed by Coach Herbert and his fundamental entitlement of Dennis Schröder as the clear leader of the team is the key... Herbert put Dennis in a highly responsible position where he had to grow to fill it out and push himself and his teammates to that success. and to be fair... Dennis somehow needed this respectfull push to realize his own responsibility. and i guess that this process of maturing of Dennis was not free of conflicts and some noise (regarding nomination of Kleber and Schröders exceeding of competence for example). To be respected is what Dennis always asked for and he totally deserves it to the fullest. MVP!!!

I also would not compare German and Slovenian achievements. Slovenia won due to leadership of Goran Dragič in his last years as a pro of quality and a very strong center in his last international year. They have no such leadership now (Dončič is not it, too immature ) and a distinct lack of big players. Germany on the other hand has their main people either in their prime or very young. The end result is in the history books netherlands was still clear the better team but germany scored two goals and won because they where taken by their pride and fought with every man for every ball. Dirk scored 41 in one half then he sat down.😅 i would have guarded him to 30😎 I missed due to USA Basketball i played. Thoughest miss for me in retrospective. I saw a whole career of a true german Legend from its roots in front of my eyes. But for heaven the team and the coaches were never good enough. Coach Herbert was the main thing that made the difference. He holds the attention of the guys and has their respect because he is a fair person who gives everyone their respect too, but also holds everyone accountable. His calm demeanour and way of letting his words sink in, seems to keep the players focused on the basic things they want to achieve. Without him, this group would have probably faltered alot more in close games, like they used to in the past. But they have shown so much growth in such a small period of time already, I can only look to the future with the anticipation of great things. The olympics are coming up, and tbh I am not afraid of facing a team USA allstar roster with this group of players and their excellent coaching staff.

As a German iam so happy 8-0 from an German Team at a WC in Basketball🤪 and as an european its much more fantastisch Gold,Silver 6 Teams under the best 8 Teams. Of Course next year i think the Americans send all they can mobilized to the Olympics but Serbia missing his Top3 and if next year they are fit the americans get big big problems at the Olympics against this Serbian Team and especially with this defense FIBA BB they can play. The time is over now where an US Team dominate every game with 30+ .Of course they can win Gold but Serbia or Canada , Australia ,Spain are so great Teams. Its not an easy way as in the 90th.But i think most of the Amercans still not understand it and i think they must lesrned it on the hard way

It'll be one hell of a tournament. The Germans doing it like their football team and exiting in the group phase wouldn't even be a super big surprise with so many stacked teams. But then ofcourse they'd also be able to go far again. Looking forward to next year already, as I have tickets for a group phase game :)

Definitely a surprise. If we're honest with ourselves, going into the tournament in terms of expectations teams like US, Canada, France Lithuania and Serbia looked stronger contenders. Germany exceeded expectations but they played better than all the above and they fully deserve it. Great team work throughout the tournament and in fact both finalists and a few other "surprises" like Latvia had that. Goes to show, a team is greater than the mere sum of its parts

We had a bad day and Milutinov and Bogi and Petrusev got some injury after Canada game(which only players knew) and weren't ready for the final game so the whole team was down and nothing was going in amd the player that was in the best mood got injured early in the game yesterday but despite everything we lost by 6 only agains a full and healthy german team which makes us proud of our boys and we coming for Olympic gold 10 times stronger. Congratulations to Germany, they fought so well this whole tournament and they deserved the gold. Some problems our team faced doesnt take away that Germany played amazingly and were a better team yesterday so once again congrats Germany! Hope we get a rematch at Olympics 😉

To be honest it can happen that we will loose in the olympics early on and won´t get anything or that we go for the medals. There where some close games where we gave up lead unnecessary against letvia we could have lost and earned nothing. So a bit of luck is also necassary for everyone to make it to the final.

As a German I'm very happy (and surprised) with the Worlc Cup, but i don't see a dominance coming up. There are so many great nations out there and Germany could have lost in the Quearters in the final second. They have a resiliant and versatile team, but so have others. What I loved about the World Cup that it has a real high quality and was not just "Entertain Basketball" like the NBA.

I hear/read suggested that the North American National Basketball Association adopt some FIBA Basketball Rules. I think one rule they could easily adopt is the metric system. I think it would also benefit the NBA by dropping “World Champion” from our finals every year.

@@cracknigr6065 I'm so agreed with you. Those double dribbles and especially that ridiculous traveling violation they edited makes the game way boring... not to mention that now the defenders may not do hand check like in the past. I'm just concerned that by the next decade, even a slight touch by a finger will be called a foul... and the traveling violation limit is when they stepped more than 4 steps LMAO

As a Serbian, Germans were just better, they scored easier, and played their game. However, it should be noted that Schroder's 3 free throws were an offensive foul (Avramović touched only the ball, while he kicked him), and also Petrušev offensive foul was a 2+1 play EASY, since the German player was moving at full speed into him. Still, we had our chances so we can't really complain. We also missed at least 3 clear lay-ups, and gave away several turnovers without any real pressure, and that was it. Congrats to Germany, you have a great team.
