This Chinese EV Is Going To Be A HUGE HIT In Europe
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
Elliot takes a look at the brilliant (if unfortunately) named Seal from BYD. With sleek design inside and out, punchy performance and packing some seriously innovative engineering, this looks to be one of the most complete EVs to come out of China this year. With first deliveries to Europe scheduled for late '22, could this be one of the first Chinese electric cars to become a smash hit overseas?

People used to laugh about Chinese phones. Then Huawei, Honor, OnePlus, Xiaomi, Oppo took over LG HTC and every other Android brand. It almost overtook Samsung until the US trade war. Then you have DJI making the world's best drones from consumer to military grade, along with their Osmo gimbal series. BYD with their blade battery tech and affordable EV pricing making Tesla squirm. And mind you, I'm no fan of China's communist government. Owned a few Xiaomi smart home products and they are great quality lasting me few years now.
I'm living in a city in the north of China and all of the taxi in my city are BYD EV cars since the year of many years ago. Can't remember clearly, but at least 5 years. My city is known for pollution before, because of the coal mineral of the city, but we are one of the first city to massively adopt electric vehicle. Very proud of that.

Great report Elliot. Keep up the good work. It seems these new EV cars are getting more technical by the day. Driver feedback or dynamics as you call them are a big part of the driving experience. Tesla have taken this and spun it around. I’ve driven the model S and model 3. They don’t feel very engaging and the model 3, dual motor is so flat through the bends. I think we’re getting away from the driving enjoyment and turning the cockpit into an entertainment system with way too much automation thrown in. I saw the Funky Cat locally the other day. Thanks to Elliot and co. for keeping us informed of what might be coming soon to a country near us. The section on their process improvements was particularly interesting, but I wondered about the use of manufacturer-provided stats, eg. the use of CTB architecture making the shell 50% stronger, and the side 45% better protected in a collision. Does that mean crash impact testing has found that an occupant would be 45% less likely to suffer a serious injury in a side-impact? Do we know how this compares to Western vehicles? It's tempting for PR departments to produce flashy numbers that might not mean very much in reality.... and the BYD hat may have (unfairly) made me even more sceptical than usual!

Maybe I missed it but I didn't hear the range although I suspect it's pretty good. I live in Thailand and I haven't seen BYD here yet but given the ease of trade between the two countries I would expect them to be here soon. GWM are already here with the ORA and Haval brands.. The only only issue for me apart from not having enough money is how low it is. It looks good and it helps drag which is mostly OK around Bangkok and down towards Pattaya where the roads are good. Up here in the northeast extra ground clearance is more of benefit since the roads are built by guys with pickups and there often seems to be little thought about how cars fit the picture.

@machenka

Not so sure about that. The quality of a German car is still far ahead of these Chinese versions, and the resale value will likely also differ wildly. I know most people won’t be able to afford a nice car like a BMW, Mercedes or Audi but even a car maker such as VW are years ahead when it comes to build quality compared to the Chinese. There’s a lot of focus on battery tech but the knowledge to build a quality car is something the European car makers have perfected over the last several decades not to mention the security features where they are far ahead of the Chinese. Even Tesla’s build quality leaves a lot to be desired compared to these European car makers.

Great looking and very promising EV, let's hope it reaches the UK at a really competitive price. My only criticism would be why rear wheel drive rather than front for the 2X4? RWD on ICE cars generally poorer in low grip situations due to weight distribution. Engine/gearbox up front and not much over the back axle. In EV the weight distribution is much more even. Battery in the middle and motor over the back wheels. RWD leaves the front just for steering which is much better. VW have done this with the MEB platform too.
Small mistake on your graphic at 2:54. The 230 kW power of the long range RWD model equates to 310 hp, not 210 hp. There is no way that heavy car goes 0-60 in 5.9 seconds if it only has 210 hp on tap!

Kind of disappointed in the boot, would have preferred a Hatchback in my opinion. Also although the inside looks plush, maybe tone the seats down a bit, especially the rear ones and those tear drops on the rear. Otherwise a damn fine looking car. Needs to come in at under £40 though to be a contender in the UK market, but might be possible if BYD get into Sodium Batteries for their car's by 2023 as suggested recently...

"This Chinese EV Is Going To Be A HUGE HIT In Europe" I have seen more convincing commercials than this one. Strangely, they forgot to tell that this is an advertisement.
That car looks fantastic. I much prefer the styling to Tesla's options. Unfortunately, I live in a backward part of the world where we can't buy such products, namely North America. Bring it to Canada and I'll buy one.
Great quality video, but we need more detailed content; it is closer to a advertisement than a critical overview.. Elliot does a great job.

I think it is a fair review. You want a manufacturer paid ad? Go watch any one of the Vinfast videos, where they are paid to talk about Vinfast for two thirds of the video and only gets a few minutes driving the car itself, with a Vinfast minder in the back seat. Multiple reviews for the Seal will be coming out, so you will get a real sense of how good the car is. The latest gen Chinese EVs starting to be exported internationally have looked impressive. I literally could not find a single review that didn't just gush about what a great car the MG4 is. All the Australia/NZ based youtubers reviewing the BYD ATTO 3 have generally given it great review as well. Similar for NIO and Xpeng reviews from the western press.

That is a great-looking car... WOW...! Similar in design ethos to the upcoming Hyundai Ioniq 6, it's great that manufacturers are (albeit, rather too gradually for my liking...) finally starting to move away from aerodynamically-inefficient leviathan SUVs and focusing on efficiency and range. Well done, BYD - it deserves to sell like hot-cakes 👍
That looks like a lovely car. Handling engineering first then focusing on looks second is the only way to get that sort of next-level efficiency. Can't wait to see a right-hand drive one in real life

There is a 25% tax on all Chinese imports, there won't be any Chinese EVs coming to the US any time soon. Now BYD do have factories in the US building electric buses, maybe they can expand these factories to build passenger cars, who knows.
WOW AMAZING BEAUTIFUL LOOKING CAR EXTERIOR AND INTERIOR!!! 🤩🤩
Fantastic report.
I'm a bit cautious about BYD getting a huge success in Europe. Their prices are really high compared to the Chinese equivalent. Eg Yuan+/Atto 3 costs 130k-155k RMB in China (€18k-€25k), but actually starts at €43k in Holland! So if this Seal has the same kind of mark-up, 210k RMB will translate to well over €50k and higher for the top trim. That puts it squarely against a Model 3, and that will be a very difficult proposition for Europeans if they can choose.
@furikuri23
Жыл бұрын
I think, a HUD / instrument cluster will out compete tesla just by having it alone. Markups are understandable, because they are there to compete in the free market isn't it? If the product is better, why can't they charge more? Tesla's are profitting almost 10k on each sale and those are not marked up? Yet, People still buy them. So if they are just slightly cheaper than a Tesla being a better product, logically they will do well. With that, you get competition which drives prices down. So if you want it cheaper, you need better products and even better competition.

@@Metro6am We can't be predicting something that hasn't happen. Tesla depreciates as well, but no data on the Chinese EVs. Unless you know for sure the bias would depreciate its value, then the free market isn't exactly free after all. If Chinese EV Must be significantly Cheaper indefinitely, then whats the point of pushing the technology further when you "Must sell Cheaper" isn't it counter productive?
