This Burpee Workout Always Teaches Me A Lesson

Ойын-сауық

On October 2nd, 2023 I started a burpee challenge ‪@busydadtraining‬
The goal of this burpee challenge is to complete the following two workouts before my birthday, which looms near the end of December.
1. 275 6 count burpees in 20 minutes
2. 120 10 count navy seal burpees in 20 minutes
The good news so far: I was able to complete 277 6 counts burpees in 20 minutes.
The bad news so far: I have only been able to complete 112 10 count navy seals in 20 minutes.
In todays video, I try to push myself a little closer to that goal of 120 navy seal burpees in 20 minutes.
As can be the case a lot of times in life, there is both bad news and good news in this workout.
However, if you are able to take away positives, or "good news" from your own workouts, even if the workout doesn't go exactly how you had planned, then you are well on your way to improving yourself for the next workout.
00:00 What do want to hear first?
01:25 Forget the clock
06:10 So far, so good
10:25 The good news
11:26 A 2nd half strategy
17:17 The bad news
21:39 Lesson for next time

I think in a lot of ways, the mental barriers are just as hard to overcome, as opposed to the physical ones. I'm glad to know that we think the same way, and also that you enjoy the voice over. I've got another 20 minute Navy Seal workout coming out here in a few hours. It was a tough one for sure, brother, but it ended up being a good result. Hey brother nice work 👍 I think you’ve got this. My recommendation, don’t focus on the reps per minute. Just stick strictly to 1 rep every 10 secs, the key in my experience is consistent rest interval and a simple short term goal, the next rep! Good luck 🤩

I had thought about going really hard in the first 10 minutes and trying to get 70 reps done. Then I could hold 5 a minute over the second half and still get 120. But I think honestly your suggestion is better, simply for the consistent rest piece. I’m thinking of trying again tomorrow. I did the 6 count’s yesterday and I’ll just do a lighter bodyweight circuit today. Nothing pump heavy at all😅. Cheers Bruno man!

  • @DavidWhitten

    @DavidWhitten

    8 ай бұрын

    Hey David. Thanks for the question brother! I totally agree. I would find burpees difficult without a nice warm up. That’s especially true with navy seals. Maybe I could get away with it for some 1 pumps but that would be about it haha. The older I get, the more I need to get this old body warmed up👍. Maybe I should do a short video on my warm up? Either way, in a nutshell this is what I usually do before every workout. Jog in place, some jumping jacks, and while I’m doing that, I’m rotating my shoulders and warming them up. I typically do that for 2-3 minutes. Then I do some stretching starting with my neck, shoulders, chest, sides (lats) and end with my legs. I take a bit longer on this part. Maybe go for about 5 minutes. My legs are always a bit sore. I also enjoy a good downward dog, along with a few rotational stretches for the lower back and spine. Hope that answers your question brother. Thanks for checking out the channel again. I honestly appreciate the support.

    @@DavidWhitten nice one. Yes a warm up vid would be cool. That's very useful. It's helpful to know it's legs that you do the most. It's the same with me. With 6 counts my legs are absolutely on fire usually but upper body relaxed. I'll add in significantly more lower limb warm up work now. I usually do 25 Burpees as my warm up but will mix it up I think. Hitting the high six count numbers requires maximum speed from the outset and going in cold has stung me a few times. Appreciate it. So familiar Territory here my man it can go either way 6 more reps sounds a lot and the 102 session well that happens I remember doing similar and then the next session getting a pr, I’m sure if you go in fresh and don’t put any pressure on yourself I’m sure you can claw another 6 reps. Have you considered doing the navy seals first for the next 80 minutes block? You know the 6 counts will come easier than the 10s and if you don’t hit the 10s you can back off on the 6 counts to reserve some mental energy for the following week? Just an idea brother great work it won’t be long 💪🏻🫡

    That’s all great advice Jay man. I’d be inclined to agree. I feel like if someone put a gun to my head, I could just suck it up and get the 275. That’s not the case with the seals though. So yeah, focusing more on them does seem to make more sense. I was thinking about throwing on my body armour and doing like 120-150 reps. Rest for a day or so and then see what happens without the extra weight🤷‍♂️.

    @@DavidWhitten you know it’s not the stamina that’s the issue with the 10 counts it’s the muscle endurance/fatigue mainly in the shoulders so using the vest may make you feel that much lighter once you do them without it, I’d just say go easy with the vest sessions as you don’t want an injury just use it as a tool to work the muscle endurance as it will more likely be shoulders that get injured and they are the worst for recovery time! @@DavidWhitten Yeah that would definitely detract from your main goal. You really want to be holding back where you feel like you are desperate to do a session. I would have three days free of upper body work. You will be going crazy! But all the muscles will be brimming with glycogen stores ready to attack the session. Every day or every other day is ok to build a background but when you need to perform on a particular day, you need to have had 2 rest days, preferably 2 rest days and maybe an active rest day. Hey John, I haven’t tried that approach but it does sound like a good strategy. • @johnconlon2207

    @johnconlon2207

    @@DavidWhitten Yes. The intervals are not flat out. The idea is that they are all at the same pace. Also you can decrease the rest period. The interval is actually tge rest period not the effort phase. Example 6 x 800s on the track. Say 3 mins with 2 mins rest. Then over time decreading the rest. The first one should feel easy enough with the last done feeling tough. You could apply it to a certain number of reps The time would be slower than the taret you are aiming for. The bext day would br more slower endurance. Fartlek is a kind of speed play. In running you would vary pace almost as the mood took you. Hence the play. Eg up the pace for 20 reps ir vary the type of burpee at random intervals. These are just random ideas on thr subject.
