This is one of the best tutorials I’ve seen. Really in depth on the fundamentals that most people gloss over. Doing body weight has a lot of complications to it compared to weight lifting. Having to remember every part of a movement isn’t easy and it can be hard to break down where someone is failing.

Yep during the shutdown last year I had to rely on push-ups and other calisthenics, of course, and lighter weight dumbbells doing more reps. When I went back to the gym, my bench and squats had gone up. Another thing that happened was my physique and fitness noticeably improved from doing only calisthenics, running, stairs, dumbbell supplementation. I’ve now made the switch from gym to to home/street workout full time and I’m getting better results - at age 46 - than I ever got at the gym, where I did too much “testing my strength.” Home workout benefit that you can grab a workout in your underwear has real benefits: more total volume per week, no baggy shorts to interfere with squats (seriously). I’m doing “no days off” or 6 days a week full body - not destroying myself each workout like I would with 2 or 3 gym workouts per week (when I needed 3 recovery days), but I’m seeing results. I’m kind of moderately pumped all the time I guess. But since I’m not totally destroying myself with each work out, I think I’m getting enough recovery for the muscles to grow. Or, if I did a hard enough work out the day before that I am really sore on a given day, then I will take a day off. I managed to achieve that recently doing a bunch of dumbbell lunges.

@@lucass.4365 yep - most people cannot do as many (correct) push-ups as they think they can. Done correctly, it’s a 15 to 20 rep max, or about 60 total in 4 minutes , exercise for most people, even fairly fit people, meaning it’s heavy enough for hypertrophy and strength gains.

It's basically bodyweight exercises. It improves your overall strength for complex and diverse movements (contrary to weight lifting where you build more strength but for a limited number of moves and ranges again and again, which is less efficient in an everyday situation). It also builds a lot of relative strength (your strength compared to your weight), your core, and your physique (obviously) in a very balanced way. Although it's a bit harder to progress and the result comes slowly. Legs are a bit harder to build but there are some great exercises for them, most people just don't dig deep enough into Calisthenic leg exercises. And you can add weight to the exercises or complete it with weight lifting if you want. ACalisthenics also improve your stability, agility, and flexibility (especially if you add some yoga exercises, which most of the advanced practitioners do). It's great for your body, physique, and most importantly health.

This is inspirational! Thank you for doing a channel “for beginners” who are keen to do calisthenics. I’ve been weightlifting for the past 20 years+ (yes, that’s right) and frankly as I get older it’s getting boring, losing my strength and growing a belly. I want to reboot my body, gain strength and get back into shape and been hype about calisthenics, I think it’s the way to go! Just sub!

Since you're experienced do you know how to work your shoulder blades in other ways than push ups

Christian Figueroa Best would be to show u a visual but guess I have to explain in words and hope it makes sense. Stand straight. Take 2 light dumbbells (1.5kg to 2 kg) or 2 bottles of mineral water (if u don’t have weights). Hold them tightly and stretched out your arms at 90 degrees. Chest out and shoulders back. Then stretch your arms upwards and backwards at a 45 degree angle focusing on squeezing your back. You can face upwards if you want to get the traps involved too. Do as many reps till failure at a moderate pace. Just hope this explanation makes sense.

If you're getting a belly, you're eating too much. Fat is simply stored calories.

Dude, you just popped up in my feed. Been looking at alternative ways of establishing a new workout routine/regiment and looking into calisthenics. 35 year military, retiring, broke in different areas .. I’m listening, thanks.
