@@nihilist1680 you see results in a couple weeks doing this too. It’s just more difficult to see progress because the progressions aren’t measured with a definitive number and progressing from one exercise to another typically involves a significant load difference (certainly not as simple as adjusting in 5lb increments). So progress appears slow. At the end of the day how quickly you progress depends on how good your routine is and whether you can tailor your routine to reach your goals. Neither method is superior. The only muscle group you really can’t hit effectively without weights is the low back, and legs absolutely benefit from weighted exercise over bodyweight alone. But to say that weights build superior strength is just wrong. Strength is relative. A calisthenics athlete may not be able to win in a deadlifting competition, but the average weightlifter can’t do a muscle up, planche, human flag, or single arm pull-up (not without injuring themselves at least). Its a different kind of strength. Weights tend to build larger muscle groups while calisthenics train the large and small muscle groups (less isolation). I think the perfect exercise routine would include both bodyweight and weighted exercises to get the benefits of both.

Well said. I‘m a 50+ guy and I started moderate exercise - but every day - a couple of years ago. I followed an online program, started small and worked up. One exercise I absolutely hated was the humble pushup… I can do a decent number of pushups now but it took about a year to really get them flowing. I found building chest muscle to be really hard. Most fitness things seem to require that 6-12 month time frame. But once you got them, it‘s so good.

8-9 months to do a push-up?? Girl that makes me feel so much better .. I feel like so many fitness instructors/trainers make it out to be this quick process when in reality for most people it takes time.. of course it also depends on current fitness level, genetics, etc etc and so for others it may be quick and easy but for the rest of us it takes a while .. thanks for being up front about this !!

This video is amazing! It's actually surprising how much you can do for your body with only the furniture you have at home lol Also, let me just say THANK YOU for reminding me that it takes time and practice to be able to do these exercises properly. Controlled strength all the way! It's so easy to forget that sometimes! Thumbs up for a great video! Cheers :)

This was rather helpful. Before I ever joined the gym, I used to practice tricep and chest dips on the edge of my bathtub. I never knew what they were but always loved the feeling of pumped muscles.

I'm 48 and never been athletic and didn't start working out u til in my 40s. I finally enjoyed working out just last year. It took me a year to do push ups and my next goal is to do pull ups. I'm new to calisthenics and I'm very interested so this video is great to learn from the basics.

I did the same exercises, however I modified it to my own needs. Like doing knuckle push-ups (for Range Of Motion), seated rows/lat pulldown/straight arm pulldown (w/ recycled bike tubes), and hindu push-ups (alt for dips).

This is exactly the information I’ve been looking for! I’m training in circus right now (which is crazy upper body demand) & my upper body strength was the worst. Anyways a year later I hurt my knee in the air, & now I’m stuck at home with a bum knee and can’t go to the studio, so I’ve decided to learn a pull up. It’s been the hardest thing ever, & I was looking for this video 2 months ago (when I first hurt my knee). Oh and your right about the pull up bar- I have a portable pull up Bar/I can hang my silks Off of it bar & getting it was the best decision ever. Anyways, Seriously thanks!
