Look into HDMI ribbon cables, ones where you can switch the ends. So if you want it to be Micro on end or 90* bend. I have a normal 7" touchscreen installed in what was previously a 7" portable DVD player. I cut out the back of the monitor, Basically it's an adjustable frame/stand, the pi4 hangs off the back. The 7" screen I bought had an audio circuit. I replaced the speakers with ones salvaged from a laptop. It is basically a sub notebook. I choose the bluetooth keyboard for the scenario, but I have a Logitech keyboard and trackball that work on one dongle. Anyway I use drill batteries to power it on the go. It is a full desktop with Retropie, also runs Android for movies, Anything, anywhere, with a cellphone hotspot. Also built the same into a Boombox... better for movies, plays cassettes as well. Ended up making both devices after my Piboy DMG made me think about dimensions I'd prefer. All that to say I agree. This screen will split people. I got lucky scored my 7" screen for $27 shipped. The fact that it's taller doesn't get in the way or ruin anything. I can set my 7" 1024x600 in front of 2 other monitors and see over it, so I can game and internet and movie/tv all at once. Still intrigues the hell out of me, I want one of these wide screens!

For anyone who is interested in this idea, if you have an old tablet or a smartphone lying around Spacedesk allows you to use it as a secondary monitor. I tried it with both my smartphone and tablet. Feels novel at first but ultimately it doesn’t replace the functionality of a second monitor (or a second device for multitasking)

Solid video!! Love the idea. Would love to see a portrait example set up with updating stats for sports fans, weather nerds? Some fun possibilities. But maybe those are best suited for a Pi standalone project. Loved to see that the car thing was still in use! I bought one after watching your last video and can't wait to get playing with it.

This is a neat idea for a lot of things as comments had mentioned but even a fun idea for aesthetic might be a music visualizer or clock when not using as a productivity tool. I like things like lava lamps and such when working for some added visual interest while on task when needing a short break and this might be a way to have one without needing a dedicated device. I love the macropad idea too, I wonder how well that kind of application might work on a Mac? I know you can only make videos on what gear you have access to but I know so often some stuff is limited to Windows only, and I'd love to eventually see a few ideas or alternatives for Mac users sometime!

mini monitors are a massive understatement. I've been using a mini monitor for about 2 years now and they're incredibly handy without taking up desk space. Mostly use it for messages on discord while gaming or watching a video while needing the full display space on your main monitor. If I had to describe the usefulness of a mini-monitor, it's like carrying a small pocket knife with you. Although it's a small blade and not great for splitting wood or even cutting rope like scissors can, but because it's on you at all times, you end up using it more than any other tool you own.

I use a 13 inch touchscreen portable monitor in the exact same way. People would think "why would you ever want to remove your hand from your mouse" but actually, windows does have some QoL designed for touch screen. For example, if you are using Chrome, you can touch the screen of another app, and the mouse will stay on the chrome page. Very useful for certain work flows, especially if you need different sizes of screens to fit the layout you want.

    @RNMSCАй бұрын

One of the uses that I know people have been putting these monitors to use for on the Raspberry Pi platform is small media centers, for things like running Spotify, or other music platforms. There is enough space to put album cover art, a legible tile being played, a playlist you can scroll forward and back through, as well as contrls for playback, skip, thumb's up/down, and volume. The only limiting factor to using such a monitor on your PC is most likely how flexible whatever you are using to playback music is in layout of the UI elements. But a pretty basic setup with a "landscape' layout is likely to work. And there may be space to add you favorite clock and calendar app to the screen. I can also see using it as an event queue system. Where events that require responses show up, and stay until you pull them live into your active workspace. Something like that might work with the NOtifications tool for your platform, or may be a stand alone application that could bubble up higher priority items based on your preferences. "Boss says this needs to be done yesterday, mark it as done yesterday, Wife is going into labor, top of the heap, and so on, with the top 3 or 5 items being displayed, perhaps like a row of post-it,s that can be slid left or right to see what else is pending. (because none of us has found the perfect way to automate prioritization.) And yeah, they have even higher resolution displays in this size/form factor now. Have fun!

Thanks for showing one of those screens attached to a keyboard! I had the idea to attach a larger one of those (like one the same display panels used for the secondary display on ASUS ZenBook Duo and ROG Zephyrus Duo models) to a premium Cooler Master keyboard I already had and a Raspberry Pi Zero series in between, to show me function key assignments and keyboard shortcuts for various apps I'd use, as well as having a text editor installed for reduced distraction writing sessions, before I drew a mock-up in Figma and realised that it wouldn't be feasible. While on holiday, I decided to set up my Xencelabs Quick Keys (that I normally use with my workstation) with my laptop to control Evernote, since I'd keep forgetting different keyboard shortcuts in there, before I found your video and realised that you did a similar thing! (3:20) That reminds me of when I'd sometimes have Milanote open on my pen display so I could interact with cards and draw on boards using the pen!

I like the idea the only downside is the 400px vertical real estate... A lot of app dialogue boxes dont play nice at that size past win XP so it's possible to get the dialogue stuck on that screen since the title bar and confirmation buttons get cut off and the window is unscalable. 600px vertical is the sweet spot.

I recall having this issue on Thunderbird email client the auto set up wizard put the Ok/ Cancel buttons below the viewable screen on several installations such that I had to use tab and guess where the focus of the buttons were, and press enter to continue. The good news is there is a relatively simple, like control + shift + click on the window which allows the mouse to be dragged off the screen taking the dialogue box with it which would reveal the hidden buttons. The bad news is I can't remember if the control + shift + click is the right combination ! but there is a way to handle this.

Great option for gaming in certain scenarios too. I played Escape from Tarkov and needed a map app on a second device and this would have been perfect for that.

Ive had this exact setup for a few years now, I use a "Field Monitor" with a power adaptor and an phone arm clamp so I can hide it behind my regular monitor when i'm not using it.

I just use multiple _large_ screens. For Photoshop and other Creative Suite programs, I put all the various control palettes on the left screen, leaving the main working area un-obstructed and nearly full screen. That beats a single control that doesn't even fit vertically, as in your example.

I would like to add that you could also utilize a tablet with the app and software "Super Display" it can connect wireless or wired to your computer and creates another display for your tablet like this. I use it all the time.

I am using a re-purposed ipad screen that is sold off Aliexpress that came with a case power adapter and cables and stand. It's a bit pricier at around $65. I won't link the actual product that I ordered but you can search for something like "9.7inch 2K Monitor 2048X1536". Pretty handy for like keeping an eye on alerts, chat at work. Only thing is that it lacks touch screen which would be useful for certain things.

I totally see the use in something like this. I kind of have a workflow like this with my laptop and two monitors that I use. My laptop screen is my "mini monitor" and my two 27in displays are my main. I use the laptop pretty much the same way you use your mini monitor. Music, messaging, the odd editing tool or window.

If you have a small desk, stacking your monitors vertically is a great solution. You can have two matching monitors that only take up the desk space of one.

I really like how you are using the mini screen to track your work. I probably will copy you with one for my work laptop and another for my personal workstation. Do you have social media I could follow you as well? I really like this type of content to be in my feed. Thank you for showing us such amazing tech!

I bought one over a year ago as it just released and I had the idea of putting it on my forearm with a raspberry and using it as a smart “watch”, cyberdeck type thing. I never ended up doing it though and I still have it lying around.

Logitech high end keyboards use to have a diagnostic & short cut screen. It was tiny and gray scale, thus it was very limited almost useless. Now this is the perfected version where you have full colour video touch screen. I already know how i'm going to use it, Music & Chat is exactly what I already use on my auxiliary monitor.

I work from a laptop, so use the laptop display that way. And that's true for both work and personal (both at home but in different rooms). I have 2 external screens, side-by-side, and the laptop screen just below them. I put all my communication and scheduling apps on the laptop. They would be in the way or a distraction otherwise. If I had a desktop computer like yours, with a massive curved screen, like yours, then the mini display would be cool.

My desk setup is a little nuts. Triple monitors with a 55 inch tv mounted above them that I split into 4 virtual monitors. I do something similar to the mini monitor. I keep my phone on the stand that clips to my keyboard. Not a set up for everyone but I can't live without it now.
