This and That: 2023 ISU World Team Trophy (Haein Lee, Junhwan Cha, Knierim and Frazier)

Спорт

This week, the top figure skaters headed back to Japan for the 2023 ISU World Team Trophy. It was a celebration of skating with outstanding performances by Haein Lee, Junhwan Cha, Yelim Kim, Jason Brown, Kevin Aymoz, Matteo Rizzo, Isabeau Levito, Kaori Sakamoto, Ilia Malinin, Hannah Lim and Ye Quan, Madison Chock and Evan Bates, Piper Gilles and Paul Poirier, Alexa Knierim and Brandon Frazier, Riku Miura and Ryuichi Kihara and many more. We break it all down on the latest edition of 'This and That'.
Note: We forgot to discuss Ilia Malinin. We both noticed and improved emphasis on performance during the short program which we commend him for and look forward to see him continue to develop in the future.

This event was huge for Junhwan Cha and Haein Lee. Coming off very successful Worlds, they solidified their status as top skaters in their respective fields at this event. For Haein, it was a particularly big deal, because she came out ahead of Kaori (even though Kaori obviously made errors here - she was obviously tired after a long and frankly difficult season). I am glad for this, because there were so many shifting gears this season as to who's going to rise to the occasion, and it's good to see new stars finally having emerged so that next season we can really get to the business of who's going to maximize their momentum throughout the quad.

I realized that the ISU is taking completely the wrong approach to media. For most media, the buyer are advertisers and the commodity is our eyeballs. The real money is how valuable and how many eyeballs are on that sport. The fewer number of eyeballs and the less visibility of the sport, the less money everyone makes. It is completely inane for a mass media thing to put it behind paywalls. Whatever money you lose from subscriptions, you gain from advertising dollars. And what ends up happening is that you get more eyeballs and more momentum for people to want to see the sport in real time and even live. But the ISU and NBC would rather go after small subscription dollars than big advertising. And then the sport shrinks even more.

Very impressive competition for Alexa and Brandon, both programs were so world class with incredible elements like those throws, and they still have more potential. They built even more momentum for themselves here and would be a favorite for a World medal again next year. I really think they're underestimating themselves and selling themselves short. I really wish Alexa didn't have to move to Illinois so fast for the sake of a regular job and family so that this phenomenal pair could seriously consider another season. A devastating loss if this is it, especially given they've only competed around 15 competitions together. My heart can't take never seeing Alexa again, she's such a special pair skater and looks better than ever on the ice. I could watch those throws all day.

Dave, thank you for explaining the KZread algorithms. side note: NBC is so short sighted not to broadcast the World Team Trophy. Of all skating events, it is the most spirited, most fun, plus shorter than a traditional compeittion. It is the perfect event for "novice" fans that we want to attract to the sport. I stick to the ISU KZread channel (which I needed to set up a VPN to access). Once you learn the tricks of searching the ISU KZread channel it becomes your best friend. I am worried about how "Recast" is going to mess this all up.

My theory about Jason, he will stay in competition until there is a very strong second male skater in the US who emerges to take his place. He seems pretty devoted to Team USA. I heard him mention in one interview that he even tried a few quads and might train them. (It was a long interview -- I think Golden Skate -- and I got the impression that he was dealing with an injury the year prior to the Olympics that he never spoke about publically but now has an intense off ice training regimen that has gotten him into the best shape of his life).

I loved this event! Always look forward to it, and all the silliness is actually a fun and refreshing change at the end of the season. A moment for me was Alexa taking Ilia's quad god cap off when team USA were doing the winner's interview (Jason was speaking Japanese to the interviewer on behalf of the team). It really highlighted the age and maturity difference and variety in this event - was like mama bear reminding her kid to be respectful lol. I really like seeing the teams together and everyone's personalities more. Highlights here were Jason as always, Kaori as team leader and the Korean team in general! Junhwan Cha and Haein Lee in particular, but also loved the dance team and was happy Yelim had a bit of a redemption skate after a few rough competitions. All in all a great way to end the season :)

Chock and Bates built momentum with 4CC while Piper and Paul lost momentum from the injury. I don't think there was a question in my mind that they were on their way to the title. Piper and Paul would have gotten better scores in the later seasons if they were just able to show their faces at competitions.

During the watch of the Chock & Bates' long program - I realized half way through that it almost appeared that her body movement was creating the music; the ebb and flow of the music matched her body movements perfectly, it was amazing. So many of the dance pairs looked like they skated to the music while C&B created the music through movement.. I also enjoyed C&B's program because they have moved beyond the simplicity of portraying a character from a movie, etc and have developed a more abstract thought-provoking theme!

I get that they've had to make a lot of changes to it this season, from the story it tells, to the music, the choreography, and then the costumes. I don't love the music, but I love how much they had to fight for this free dance this year. They really made it beautiful for Nationals, World's and World Team Trophy. Their alien skate was my favorite. First skate I saw them perform when I decided to watch U.S. Nationals last year.

You really hit home to me with the broadcast conversation. The way people watch television is so very different than it used to be. Also, in these difficult financial times people often have to get rid of extras just to afford the day to day. I currently pay nothing for television because I am unemployed. I only had Netflix and Peacock anyway but have dropped both. I am a skating fan that kind of drifted away from the sport for the last few years. I recently started watching again but got frustrated with the lack of in demand availability of Peacock as well as the lack of commentary - I’ve been away a while so I need the commentator giving me info. I’m also an avid gymnastics fan so I THOUGHT I could use KZread for skating just like I do gym. There is very little geo blocking or videos being pulled (except for pac 12 network) so you can really keep up with gym even if you can’t afford other options. It’s very frustrating and disappointing that you can’t do the same with skating. The only thing I got to see was junior worlds and a handful of world’s highlight reels this whole year and I hate that this sport is so very short sighted on this.

On the subject of streaming/media for skating: I follow another sport very closely that has an extremely well-done App and I think that's a place the ISU could really improve the skating fan experience. Adding time zone conversions, connections to google/outlook/apple calendar events, a video tab with highlights, integrating the news feed to include federation accounts vs. just ISU, having articles/quizzes/prediction activities before events..all ideas to increase excitement and ease of participating. Also, this other sport has live text updates during events for those unable to watch live, and I think that could be really cool. Overall the app could actually be a great resource for this sport, and it falls so so so flat...

After hearing that Belinda (and Mark, as she says) spend so much time researching every (!) competitor and “practising” saying names thousand times before each competition, the repetitive ‘Mai Miyahara’ and ‘what a great athlete’ sounds like nothing more than a lack of professionalism. Belinda was so right that commentating has to be about ‘people’ and that's what viewers get drawn into. Fluffing is nice as long as it has substance, which is only possible with thorough research and constructive analysis of technical/judging rules etc. Hearing the generic “this young man’s time will come with more practice and effort and hard work” gives us little excitement or satisfaction, and to me simply superficial or even rude, 😢especially to the athletes...

Regarding drilling edges, as a competitive skater in eastern Canada a lonnngg time ago 😜 every session had 15 minutes of full on “stroking” between compulsory ice dance and freestyle. Kind of akin to Tracy’s edge class but not as sophisticated. It was not optional. It’s maintenance and makes all the sense. I skated in the prairies and this is how it was as well. When I was really young that seemed to be how all the clubs nearby operated. But from roughly 2010-2015, most clubs switched away from doing daily stroking. Around the same time, much less focus was put on dance and there stopped being scheduled times where everyone had to practice dance. Seems like the rural clubs held onto this 'older' way of doing skating longer than the city clubs, at least in my area.

I've never paid much attention to Matteo Rizzo until this year. His skating is nice and it looked like he was enjoying his programs. Moving forward I'd like to see what else he can do. While I enjoyed his programs this year I feel like they have penultimate group vibes (if that makes sense) when he has what it takes to be in that final flight. I love all your ideas for docuseries lol I'd love to see Jason and Rohene working together, the rivalry between the Frenchmen, etc. I think after a long, strange, and oftentimes frustrating season I'm glad it ended on a good note. It's so frustrating that we can't easily access figure skating in the US. In the days where cable was just taking off, NBC always did a broadcast on Saturday and Sunday on the regular network NBC so anyone could watch it Then ABC, who had rights to a lot of ice shows, would throw up a competing ice show on network ABC so anyone can watch it. I miss the accessibility of those days

I think it’s interesting that you guys are discussing the death in figure skating and how it is difficult to actually watch figure skating (which I agree with) but as a new fan I do think that figure skating is being rediscovered again primarily because of the trending videos on TikTok! The Russian ice dancers Kaganovskaya/ Angelopol seem to always be trending on the platform and after this team event thing (which again I’m a new fan so i still don’t totally understand the sport) I keep getting videos of Ilia Malanin on my fyp! Maybe figure sling in general should focus on promotional material on this platform so it can bring in even more new fans and also young fans. Just a thought!!

But more so: I really do feel like after what Gabrielle revealed in the documentary, I just don’t know if they are going to compete again. She went through a lot even just to get to the Olympics that season. I think next season is when we’re going to see the Olympic push in ice dance. The senior field was overall really lackluster and stagnated this season, so hoping some of these teams start really making moves with revelatory programs.

I just want Chock and Bates to stay on through the 2026 Olympics. I really feel like their scores this season were reflective of the low scores they received at the 2022 Olympics. They were robbed. They deserved the bronze medal, if not the silver medal. I can't believe that a boot slip by Madison got them less than 85 points in the rhythm dance... I'm disturbed by the people claiming that they "bought" their numerous wins this season or that they were scored based on favoritism, as if they don't have the potential to win on their own, by their own merit and artistry... Sickening.

It was a shaky edge during an element, of course it's going to take their score down. Add to that the fact that their skating and edge control doesn't even come close to the ones that made it to the podium. They're a fun and interesting team but there's no way they were above those teams.

The problem is that in tech and specifically in the midnight blues, both Sinitsina Katsapalov and Hubbell Donohue were significantly better than Papadakis Cizeron. But then in artistry we have the French in 1st then Chock Bates in 2nd. So in my mind either Papadakis/Cizeron should be behind the Russians and H/D (it would never have happened but it should have) or Chock/Bates should be 2nd behind P/C if artistry is king.

Are you two serious? Dave, Ice Dance is not Singles. Next season the Junior Czechs won't even beat their more talented Senior teammates, let alone stand a chance of winning Worlds in Montreal! Their lack of Artistry refinement will be exposed at the Senior level. It should've affected their PCS at Juniors but they were the flavour of the season amongst fans who don't always watch Dance. Has Jonathan even watched the British couple yet? That's Artistry. My favourite FD of the season, and Junior Worlds was their best performance, shamefully not on the Podium.😢💔

Idk, I don’t think they were the flavor of the season: I think their power, speed, attack, and depth of edge is something that you don’t see a lot in juniors and is therefore really valued in juniors. They have ways to go, sure, but they have really good skating skills and that goes a long way at this stage. Their performance quality is good and I think they’ve already found a style that works for them: powerful, dynamic programs. They obviously have to work on many things, including extension, posture, precision, etc., but those are things they can improve on. Do I think they’re going to suddenly be able to win in seniors? No. But I think they’re a strong team, and they certainly could find success in seniors not necessarily right away, but possibly in the next few years. Bekker/Hernandez are very good: they have really nice lines and good extension, and they are very musical and have a great connection. They are also considerably slower with less ice coverage than the three teams above them at Junior Worlds. So, there are different things for each junior team to work on.

Ice Dance Scores for Chock and Bates are a joke if compared to V/M and P/C, but I believe it is not because they were hugely overscored (they did indeed get overscored, no way Chock Lvl 4 in StSq), but because the elements are different, the choreo elements are getting a hug e% of the total and the there are more of them now. I think, when it comes to the olympics team competition, they could have the same number of skaters per discipline they have been having but should allow substitutions in all four disciplines and not just two. That is how I would change it. Also, as far as letting the Russians back, the only way I could MAYBE stomach it is if they change the scoring to make artistry count for AS MUCH AS the technical score! That goes just in general though for me regardless of whether they allow the Russians back. But the Asian skaters absolutely must be competitive with the Russians!! I would hope that they lose a great deal of their political influence in artificially inflating their scores!! I just remember being disgusted listening to Tara and Johnny try and make me, as a viewer, believe it justified to give a skater a positive GOE when they fall on a jump! Are we serious?? @@zozaazz8044 I think Rachel is more referring to the women's competition. Artistry is not appreciated enough there, while it is being appreciated more in the men's event (though Ilia is massively overscored in PCS consistently).

Men killed it again, and I am so glad Malinin got the marks "he deserved" so he can reassess and start working on his abysmal skating skills (PCS in both of his programs and especially in the short were LAUGHABLE). Let's hope USFS will do what it takes to keep Jason around because without him the field is so much poorer. IMO Tomono proved once again he's not reliable and I am afraid this was likely to be his last valse. Shoma, Yuma and Miura are the Japanese Top-3 with Sato and his splendid 4Lz trailing behind. Huge props to Jun, and also to Kevin! Ladies: Yelim Kim deserved to win the FP but the judges gave it to Haein Lee to kinda compensate for robbing her of the World title she 100% deserved in Saitama. Hope Yelim's growth spurt is over and next year she will be killing it. Isabeau Levito is so delicate and beautiful to watch and I want to see her win something internationally. Ice dance: Chock & Bates were given the World title on the silver platter. They did not deserve it for what they showed in Saitama, no matter how we loved them. At this event, Lopareva & Brissaud were the best to me. Piper & Paul looked tired. Pairs: Loved Alexa but my heart was all for the Italians. I effing LOVE Sara Conti. She must be the most gorgeous woman to ever touch the skates :) They skated so smoothly in the free. It was commendable and good to watch. Sadly, I find the Japanese pair underwhelming and I feel some kind of relief when they finish their routine. This was a very long season and I am already looking forward to the new one: Matteo, Adam and Kevin with the new programs, Yuma coming back with a boom effect, Isabeau, Rinka and Yelim making a leap to be considered contenders for the next Olympics, the Taschlers and the Mrazeks making a huge splash in ice dancing next year, alongside Papadakis & Cizeron, Fournier-Beaudry & Sorensen AND Zingas & Kolesnik. And yes, I will be rooting for Conti & Macii, even if I were the only non-Italian to do so :) As for the return of the Russians, I dunno... These competitions are wonderful regardless... When I see what Zhulin said about Adam Rippon and about Ukraine, and knowing that he's the main coach of the two top Russian ID pairs... I want to scream -- hell NO! But then again, when I see Gumennik, Kaganovskaia & Angelopol and even Mishina & Galliamov - I am all, oh yes! I saw the Ukrainian response to the Russian lists of sportsmen who are forbidden to come to Russia (including Tessa and Meagan)m and -- to my big surprise -- Tuktamysheva is listed. I thought she kept quiet. Did she explicitly support the war crimes and atrocities in Ukraine, do you know? Sorry for the long post. Thanks for the show and cheers!

I bet you know nothing more than the MSM has been brainwashing you about the conflict. No history of the Ukraine and Russia otherwise you would not have formed your opinion in such words.

Isabeau is overscored in PCS too not just Ilia. Yes she’s very musical but her skating skills and speed are worse than almost all the other top skaters including Bradie. Only Gubanova is slower but overall Gubanova’s SS are much better. Lopareva/Brissaud left no impression on me. I thought Taschlers were the best technically and Chock/Bates or the Canadanes the best artistically. Tuktamysheva was listed because she appeared at that Z rally I believe. She said she didn’t know it would be a political show before appearing. A shame because I would have loved for her to be the only senior Russian woman allowed to skate as an individual.

@@Plaspos She's much faster than she was at the beginning of the season. Maybe her PCS is a bit inflated too but it has nothing to do with the GIGANTIC PCS Malinin receives for no reason whatsoever. Malinin cannot skate, has no edges, his presentation skills are dramatically poor and any component above 7.2 is outrageous.

@@wotanworld5504 oh so she improved in speed from slowest of the top skaters to second slowest of the top skaters? and that is more because gubanova was much slower this year due to injury than Isabeau improving. you have to remember Malinin does "hip-hop" which the old dinosaur judges think is "cool" and "unique."
