    No offense to Jonathan (bc I really like him). But it's really nice to hear Dave chat with someone who brings a different perspective on topics. I don't necessarily agree with Maya (or Dave) on everything. But I like hearing a civil discussion with opposing/differing ideas being shared. *Most importantly, you could still see the respect between Maya and Dave even tho they didn't see eye to eye on everything.* Great discussion! Hope to see Maya on here a lot more.

    Phenomenal interview. I enjoyed Maya’s insights and her relatively tempered approach to the topics discussed. It’s rather refreshing. I’m a big fan of many skaters in Russia and want the best for them. I didn’t suddenly start hating them because of the war or doping scandal. I understand that Russia has a history with doping and that this is a larger issue needing to be addressed, but I also try not indulge endlessly in speculation and rumors, as it often times leads further from the truth and can foster hatred for others. Yes, rumors can also turn out to be true, but I prefer to take a measured approach, be patient and hope for the facts to be revealed in the end. None of us can afford to be naïve and assume that the Russians are playing out of the same rule book, but I will still operate based upon my own principles in the meantime. I agree with Maya that the senior Russian skaters have the most to lose from the ban. International competition and prestige is ultimately what most skaters seek. Without that, motivation to train and compete will likely decrease. I do find it interesting that there is so much sympathy for Sasha or Kamila, but often times Anna seems to be ignored. She in many ways has perhaps been shafted the most, as her position on the Olympic team was questioned, she was not the favorite to win (either over Kamila or Sasha), she won in the midst of great controversy, Russia was immediately banned after her win, and many fans of her teammates still malign her. Yes, she is making the most of things in Russia, but an Olympic gold medal offers more opportunities and she is currently restricted because of her government’s wrongdoing. Maya seems concerned about finding stars or interesting figures within figure skating in order to draw greater attention to our sport, especially given the decline in interest over the years. While, I do think it’s important that we maximize on opportunities to increase interest, I don’t necessarily think doping scandals are the best type of attention. I guess I can’t be surprised though since many current fans of skating, who seemingly hate Russian skaters, still lap up every drop of Russian skating news and gossip. The truth is, the Russian skaters are intriguing. There are some big personalities, risks taken to drive the sport further, and a lot of pageantry in how they execute the sport. So despite the fact that many believe the Russians are destroying women’s singles, they still also can’t seem to stay away. As for Kamila, I think my approach is unpopular. In the same way that Dave believes that Kamila wasn’t the only one doping, that she was just the only one who was caught (not an illogical train of thought, but would still need to be proven) I also very much struggle to believe that the skater favored to win gold at the Olympics just happened to have her test result come out right as things were getting underway at Beijing. Had this happened before, the entire course of events would have been altered, the story would have been big, but not on the scale that it was, and the Olympics would have had much less drama. I just have a very hard time believing that the timing was entirely accidental. If we’re talking about other skaters doping, or potentially all of the skaters doping, I think there is some irrationality to it and it would need to be taken on an individual basis. For the women, it’s assumed they are doping because they’re landing quads, but then it’s also assumed that the only reason they land quads is because of their low body weight and size, so their teams are accused of delaying puberty. Of course, girls like Anna are accused of doping, being malnourished, emaciated, mentally and emotionally abused by her team, and the profiteer of family money and influence. With this much supposedly happening to one single girl, it’s a wonder she was even coherent and able to train. Some of these things might be true, but some of these things are possibly not and damaging to the skater or skaters that critics supposedly care so much about. I also think at this point it would be very difficult and risky for all the athletes to be doping. The chances of being caught are too high. Where Kamila is concerned, we need to be honest. She’s an exceptional talent. I can guarantee this was not lost on Eteri and they probably raised her up like a thoroughbred. Some note her age as a matter of consequence or not. Truth is, she was 15 at the time. In any other situation we’d acknowledge her as a child, but because athletics says she can compete as an adult we throw that rationale out the window, but regardless, she was a child and really still is. And so it’s not that young people can’t compete and that in order to allow them to compete we need to instantly treat them like adults, but that we need to take extra care and precaution to protect them if we are going to allow young people to operate on such a high level, in such a pressure filled, contentious, and political sport. If we want to get to the heart of the matter and correct it, go after the adults in her life. Destroying a talent like Kamila out of spite, misplaced anger, or hatred for the Russian system is completely ridiculous. Finally, noting that Kamila has fallen behind some of her peers, is a bit odd. The accusations against female skaters in Russia, specifically those under Eteri, is that they have no longevity and will not be able to skate on the same level once their bodies change. We saw Kamila go through this change this past season and struggle immensely. She also clawed her way back and can now land quads and a triple axel again. Will her peers be able to make that transition as well? That is to be determined, so comparing them seems pointless. I’m very frustrated. As stated, I’m a fan of a number of Russian skaters. I want these skaters to have long careers. I do not want them to be done at 17 only to have us move onto another 15 year old who won’t last any longer than the girl before. This is a terrible way to approach skating and it needs to change. Lets go after the people responsible.

    Agree with her about Trusova. That girl is so driven. She’s the type that needed a coach that could hold her back to help prevent injury (& someone to make her work on skating skills more along the way). Her skating skills are terrible, but her focus & drive insane. However, she got mentally broken at the Olympics so I’m not sure she wants to compete in skating anymore. I’m hopeful whatever she decides she wants next that she didn’t lose the ability to drive towards a goal. Agree with both of you about Kostornaia. So insanely talented, probably the most talented girl that ever went to Eteri’s school. But her personality seems a bit more on the flighty side & I could see her being a more high maintenance athlete to coach. I worry that if she & her partner break up in their personal relationship, that could spell disaster for her continuing skating. It would be awesome if she could succeed at pairs, whether in Russia or another federation.

  • @Lennuci

    @Lennuci

    The point is no coaches could hold Trusova back. All she always wanted was 5 quads in her free skate and she is not interested in the rest of the programme. She says it herself. And sadly that cost her an Olympic gold. I don't think she was "broken" in the Olympics. She just let her emotions out and it was broadcast to the whole world. She is probably not interested in competing just at the national level right now but can return if she wants. She is into making money out of her name at present and Rudkovskaya's money-grabbing attitude and influence don't really help her skating career.

    ISU including Yuzuru as an ambassador/commentator/performer would certainly be beneficial to them for the time being. I don't believe it would benefit Yuzuru in any way though. As a professional skater, he's getting more money, better treatment, and more creative control than he ever did while competing. Maybe, if the ISU implemented some of the positive changes proposed in the financial report, he would see involvement as worthwhile. But as it is, slapping a Yuzuru bandaid over the mess that is the ISU wouldn't do a lot in the long run.

If doping isn’t heavily punished, it’s too tempting to try to get away with it. I don’t care if the person has a great personality and great talent, the rules need to apply equally to all.

    I understand why you would think that. But it really is like that in Russia, if a person is Georgian, Armenian, Azerbajanian, etc, he would consider himself Georgian, Armenian, Azerbajanian, etc, living in Russia, even if his ancestors moved to Russia several generations ago. And people in those countries would also consider him a representative of their nation. That to be said, I agree it comes as a very convenient way of thinking if you need to switch national teams.🙂

    The ISU is probably playing a wait and watch game on letting Russia back in. At the earliest, it could be post the Grand Prix season or perhaps next year. But given Bach's performative act of repeating the Olympic Athletes from Russia soap opera trope like a dead character coming back to life again, Russia will surely be back by next year and ready to try and contend for those three spots with the help of magically regurgitated performance enhancing glasses of water.

    I enjoyed this interview so much- so informative!. I definitely disagree with the view that “all dopers deserve a second chance. “ And if this is the case, then many many people are owed that second chance - they never got it. Simply, this is not sound legal reasoning . Kamila is to be given a second chance because she is talented? So the rules don’t apply to her? Bottom line: the tragedy is is that she would most likely be quite good without doping, but doping she did. The rules are the rules. Fair is fair. The rules shouldn’t be changed because someone is young and talented. And, yes, the doping helped her. Did it get the quads for her ? No. Did it help her acquire them - yes.

I hear the ISU and IOC both want them to clean house before discussing letting Russian athletes back in on international competitions…. Kamila is said to have been cleared of any doping, due to the FFKKR orchestrating a sabotage effort of her urine samples. Dr. Filip Shvetzky is stated as the guilty party carrying out the sabotage of Kamila’s urine samples.

    I could be wrong, but I think the Russians are saying that the Americans infiltrated their lab and put in fake tests in order to blame the poor Russian skaters for doping when they so clearly were not because tarasova said so. It has to do with the timing of the results. The doping test was taken from Russian Nationals in December. Why did it take the lab so long to give out the test results? If it had been done in a timely manner, Elizaveta could have replaced Kamila and the Russians would have still won the gold medal in the team event. It is very suspicious that they waited to announce the results when they could make the most splash…. Internationally. Labs should be neutral and unbiased and something just seems off due to the timing of the results.

    Watch out, your xenophobia is showing. And very insulting to say that Georgians and Russians are the same nation. I can tell by your comments that you're very young but you should really reconsider your biases and be more mindful of what you say because the negativity will slowly eat you up.

    Me too. I love journalists that say exactly how they feel. Loved the parts where she didn’t agree with Dave, because it shows she has her point of view and she is not worried about agreeing with Dave or catering to the American audience. Please add her to your future guests list.
