This and That: Daniel Grassl's Doping Tests, 2023 Lombardia Trophy, Yuma Kagiyama

Спорт

This week, Daniel Grassl had to depart Team Tutberidze after missing three doping tests after moving to coach Eteri Tutberidze in January. He may face a suspension of up to two years. Meanwhile, the '80s rhythm dance continues to confound us - as Barbara Fusar-Poli outdid herself with the selection for Guignard and Fabbri. Green and Parsons made their season debut, but it didn't quite go as planned. Yuma Kagiyama made a victorious return to competition, Minkyu Seo delighted us at the ISU Junior Grand Prix. So much happened this week and we break down all of it on the latest edition of 'This and That'.

Well it needs to stop there will have to be a rule 😗The height difference of the Italians has never bothered me. It doesn't hinder them at all in the lifts. What I don't like more is the difference between Kazakova Reviya. They look like a pair team.

Papadakis/Cizeron's Fame RD is still the best 80s RD. Every team this season is missing the fact that the costume, music, and choreo have to all align to showcase the theme-just skating to a mish mash of 80s music and having a side ponytail does not a successful program make.

  • @janicehill4776

What side pony tails? I haven't seen any at all. I'm incredibly disappointed. No one seems to know what people wore in the 80s. So much great music is being left on the shelf in favor of mediocre pop. Where is the Safety Dance? Only Katarina Wolfkostin and her new partner look like 80s kids. TV ads do better it 80s music than the ice dancers.

I LOVE the Mrazeks but I'm surprised you didn't comment on her posture last season lol (the height difference doesn't seem much different from last season imo). It's always (well, for all of 3 years they've skated together/done ice dance) been a major shortcoming for Katerina. I'm going to consider this season as an exercise to work on their weaknesses. 😂 At least for them, it's their first senior competition/season and only 3 years of doing ice dance for both of them. Running out of excuses for the other senior ice dance teams, however.

I just rewatched the documentary to jog my memory. It’s crazy how sensitive they were to size back then. Trixie doesn’t even look large. She looks like a normal, fit woman. Peggy definitely stood out for being a bit more waif like, but she still had muscle. Aside from a tall skater here and there, most skaters in the photos, from previous generations all appear to be relatively similar in size. I mean the variety is like maybe a size 4 to size 8, with an occasional smaller or taller person. No wonder many of us that are elder millennials and Gen-xers grew up in a skating world so obsessed with weight. We weren’t even allowed to wear short sleeved dresses in competition until I was in my teens.

The US doesn't want to confront the coaching system being a complete racket because it benefits everybody financially and ego-wise, including USFS leadership. They're all friends and it's a great life, esp for "top" coaches making a Dr's income. A manager at one of the east coast's most prestigious facilities once told me many don't even report their full income to the IRS. Must be nice!

I've been observing with Tammy Gambill for quite some time wondering what is the fuss about her or why is that USFSA has been promoting her so hard as "Top US Coach". I did some research about her along the skaters that she mentors with and turns out that it didn't last long due to inconsistency when it comes with international competitions even if she has political clouting in the local competitions thus she comes off as incompetent as a coach. It is unfortunately that she claims more victims in a form of small fed skaters.

What strikes me maybe the most in this Daniel Grassl story is where did Italian Fed have their brains and morals?! How could they ever give their blessing to this move. I mean, to Russia during the war, this horrible aggression and then to Eteri, who is who she is and the whole sporting world knows it. And now Daniel of course stands there with his very own doping related issues. A bit harsh maybe, but I cannot feel sorry for him. And by the way Dave and Jonathan - what you are doing for the clean sport is truly extraordinary. Blessings!

Wouldn’t happen today but not sure how much of a stretch it will be if Brazil, Russia, India and China (BRIC) team up for a competing brand of intl Olympic style and World Cup sports. It happened quickly with Live golf vs the PGA. Tons of eye balls in BRIC and they could buy other smaller countries to go with them.

Most likely, information about the missed doping test was not received by Grassle in time. There are many reasons, because of the change of state, the telephone and mail have changed. Why, as in the situation with Valieva, does WADA withhold information? Valieva was tested in December, the result was delayed until February. Grassl learned about problems with the tests after 3 absences. After the first missed test, WADA could not contact you or did not want to?

I just can’t comprehend how one could be so stupid. It’s just so many things all together (going during the war, the ongoing doping scandal, her not being successful with men, etc) & now missing so many doping tests while training in doping central in the grand finale of how stupid can you be. It’s also likely the finale of his career.

If USFS is paying more attention to Amber (which, yay) and Ava this season....does this mean something about Isabeau, Bradie, and Lindsay? I mean, I heard everything you said about Isabeau, which we all started to really notice last season....but what can we infer this means for Bradie and Lindsay?

I‘m aware this is never going to happen, but you chatting about mismatched partners in ice dance made me mentally rematch them for fun and imagine if Lewis Gibson and Olivia Smart were to team up. 🔥 Also, I remember there were once rumours that Maya Khromykh was looking to transfer to Italy. Wish that she had and left the Tutberidze group too, she could have been coached by Carolina Kostner in PCS. I always thought that Maya was an elegant, artistically gifted skater, but team Tut tragically failed to refine these talents (as per usual).

Last year she was coached by Naomi Nari Nam, and I thought her skating was more endearing with that leadership :(

I do not mean this is any shady or dismissive way, but I often just don't see the critique and negative aspects that Dave and Jonathan discuss. E.g. I don't see the terrible height difference in the Italian team, I don't think Green and Parsons are that bad etc. I am not a professional or even an amateur. I often try and see what TSL discusses and have looked at some skaters or programs differently after their discussions. But sometimes when I completely disagree - I wonder is it my total blindness and incompetence or the beauty of this world that we are all different and like different things? :) anyhooo always interesting to listen to!!

I can’t with the Grassl situation… I met him last year and had my photo taken with him and judging by his interaction with the young female fans who bought him chocolate strawberries, he seemed like a “massive tool” . Not the brightest bulb but I also feel the adults in his life failed him too. What parent would let their kid move to Russia and train with Eteri? I’’m sure he thought his “manager” or maybe federation would take care of the address change. Maybe he thought thought WADA or whoever would find out where he was by google or look at his ISU bio snd find him in Novogorsk 😂 And I also think it was a ploy by the italian federation to buy themselves a team medal in Torino. Yes he is an adult but a young one. Young adults make bad life decisions all the time. I.E choosing the wrong college. But this was beyond that… Finally, I hate to say it other than Olivia and Tim, my favorite Rhythm Dance is that or Maria and Giorgi. It’s not too much and captures the essence of the music. Green and Parson’s were painful to watch. And Charlie’s junior team seems like such a carbon copy of he and Meryl it bother’s me and I was a Meryl and Charlie uber fan.. One things for sure Carreira and Ponamarenko’s RD is beginning to look better and better. At least it’s different..

Though no-one said this specifically, the subtext read (to me) that KHaw should have been dumped, Guignard should have been dumped, Caroline should have been dumped, so their amazing male partners could find someone better and smaller. If that is NOT what the hosts meant, I hope they will consider choosing their words more carefully in the future.

Kostornaia is my exception to the rule, the rule being that I haven’t cared about or paid attention to any of the Russian skaters since the Olympics fiasco and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. But she is too talented, charismatic, fabulous, likeable, and special not to pay attention to.
