This and That: 2022 European Figure Skating Championships (Kamila Valieva, Team Tutberidze)

Спорт

This week, the top skaters in Europe headed to Estonia for the 2022 European Figure Skating Championships. Team Tutberidze swept the podium in the women's event with Kamila Valieva, Anna Shcherbakova and Alexandra Trusova battling it out against Loena Hendrickx and Ekaterina Kurakova. Russia's pairs were supreme, with Mishina and Galliamov, Tarasova and Morozov and Boikova and Kozlovskii putting on a clinic for the rest of the world. In the men's event, Mark Kondtratiuk, Deniss Vasiljevs, Daniel Grassl and Kevin Aymoz stood out among the field. Diana Davis and Gleb Smolkin earned lower scores than they have this season in the dance event. It was a good day for Montreal, as Olivia Smart and Adrian Diaz earned a spot at the 2022 Olympic Games over Sara Hurtado and Kirill Khaliavin. Lilah Fear and Lewis Gibson also impressed in the rhythm dance. We break it all down on the latest edition of 'This and That'.

Timestamps continued: 3:30-7:13 the infamous Eteri Pyramid is back and rightfully so. This event was all about Eteri keeping it real. Ladies (Europeans): 3:43 Kamila Valieva, insanely solid in the short program so much so that I did not expect the mistakes she made in the free, albeit minor there were a few costly errors but she was so above everyone else that it didn’t matter. Better here than imploding at the Olympics (remember the free program at the 2018 Worlds post Olympics Alina Zagitova). 4:07 Anna Shcherbakova, missed the “cascade” in the short program which was a costly error but in the end it didn’t matter she did her job in the free. The free program is growing on me immensely. I didn’t expect the quad to be done as well. I watched the entire ladies event and the last two groups of Ice Dance. 4:24 jumped to pairs for a hot second, Tarasova and Morozov beating one of the Moskvina teams but could not beat Mishina/Galliamov. 5:05 jumped to mens with either Georgian men coached by Eteri. Most notably with I forgot his name lol. I’ll come back in revision lol 5:35 back to ladies with Trusova, I expected some mistakes but she missed BOTH quad lutz combos. Costly. Downgraded 4Lz. Missed trixel in short. I felt underwhelmed by her performances here. Better to have a rough event here than at the Olympics where it REALLY counts. Eteri wants 1,2,3 she didn’t have it last time because she only had 2 ladies and Sotskova was the third and not coached by Eteri

@Yoana Balcheva The PCS situation has simply changed. They are judging what they see. If a younger skater has better PCS than an older skater, their age should not be held against them. Kamila Valieva and Anna Shcherbakova's artistry and technical abilities are superior to skaters who are older than them. Why should they be held back because they are younger? Their points should theoretically be even higher since they are doing this younger, and have had less time to reach the level they are at. Older skaters have less excuses for why their PCS scores are not there. They have had more time to perfect them.

I was so happy about that! 🎊 He came into the season like a beast. I never would have thought he could do this, either. Also, he doesn't skate like a carbon copy of Stephane anymore. And I like his hair the way it is. When he has it cut shorter, he looks too boyish to me. His hair is thick, and he has the bone structure, so he gets away with it. I enjoyed watching a bunch of the skaters that had scored ahead of him in the SP, lose their placement one by one, until he sat in bronze position. That's actually one of my favorite things to watch in a competition, as long as it benefits me. Like at Worlds when I was so angry that Bradie got 9th, and then I watched the girls drop like flies until Karen was in 4th 😁.

Unfortunately he developed a concerning heart condition following a covid infection last year, and said he has had a difficult time getting his programmes and stamina back after being away from the ice for a while. He also said he has to take extra care as his heart issues make him vulnerable to covid. Proud of what he has accomplished at these Europeans despite all these worries, I believe in him and hope he will stay healthy and keep going :)

I know Jonathan saw S/B live and thought they were slow. No doubt, I see that K/S are wicked fast it's not close BUT S/B have been improving a LOT. For example, just look at how much bigger their pattern is at Euros versus on the grand prix. They have great material and clearly work very hard. I wouldn't write them off.

I haven’t seen either live but even on video it’s clear to me StepBuk improved so much this season. Their rhythm dance in earlier Grand Prix vs RusNats and Europeans seems both faster and more precise. And their free too and like you say, their patterns are bigger as well. SinKats are great but their programs don’t engage me as much this season. I agree with you to not write off StepBuk. I find the two pairs very very close in technical and presentation overall.

I have never known an athlete in any sport with the mental grit and strength of Anna Shcherbakova. I thought she was done for and we were seeing the true end to her career but nope! She pulled it out the bag and being there was incredible. The energy and charisma of her skating is incredible and I’m shocked at just how good she is everytime I watch her live. Watching Kamila after was weirdly disappointing, which gave me this weird feeling that she’s peaked at the wrong time. She was so good at RusNats, while here, not so good, in training too. I just wonder if they’ve got the timing wrong. Edit: not sure if anyone is interested but my Russian team event line up is: Women’s - Valieva short, Shcherbakova free Men’s - Kondratuik Ice dance - S/K rhythm dance, S/B free Pairs - M/G

I think what the ice dance situation tells us is that USFS needs to put both ice dance teams in the team event, not just because it's what is fair, but because it gives them chance to go up against the Russians and Canadians and see how things pan out and what little adjustments they can make before the dance competition.

Am I the only North American that thought that the judging of the 2002 Olympic long program really could have gone either way between Russians Berezhnya and Sikhuralize and Canadians Sale and Pelltier, and had no problem with the original result of 5 judges to 4 in favor of the Russian team? And that gets a little cringy while watching Meddling and reliving Scott Hamilton’s crusade? And when the docudrama spends a large chunk of time to erect a sob story around Jamie Sale growing up with divorced parents? Not that I don’t give her credit for her fierce determination, but placed next to Berezhnya’s life, this move to gain sympathy comes across as extraordinarily petulant. And I don’t know who’s idea it was to dramatize certain parts of the story, but, to me, it really detracts from the level of credibility we usually associate with something billed as a documentary,.

Such an exciting week of skating! My hot takes: - Mark Kondratiuk is the most entertaining skater and deserves his crazy PCS because he commits 110% to every program and performs the hell out of it, even if he cannot hit a nice position or point a toe to save his life. I enjoy that his coach reposts fan art of him as Jesus with a whip. What's not to love!? - M/G should do both segments in the team event, none for T/M. They cannot be trusted, even Eteri throwing death stares from the boards can't scare them into doing clean programs. - Daniel Grassl should get negative GOE for having his mouth open during his jumps and making his face look like the terrifying ghostkiller mask from 'SCREAM'

Yes I agree when tarasova and morozov are clean they are Russia’s best chance to try and beat the Chinese because sorry but mishina and Galliamov are nowhere near the Chinese level so I think even if they weren’t skating with eteri they would have gotten a little push because as much they seem to let us down, when they are on they are really on. However I don’t think them skating clean had anything to do with eteri. They have been with her for so long and have not been able to get their act together, it was just a good day for them I think. Also have you noticed how much friendlier and warmer Vladimir is being to evgenia. Since like late 2019 I noticed he was so cold to her and many people were saying that’s why she was always making mistakes because it’s hard to skate with someone who is not supporting you but now he actually looks at her at the end of their program and seems to be much nicer, maybe that’s why her skating is improving😭

I felt Dennis GOE for his well executed jumps, spins and steps were small and PCS were not enough compared to what he delivered and gave in both SP and FP. did he do that in the sp? Also to be fair at least marie france has the french who are obviously leagues ahead and to the general skating fans, ice dance is much harder to understand than any other discipline. So even if those who know ice dance can see that marie france has a hold on the judges, to a lot of people, they dont know. Unlike the ladies where even the lesser educated ones on skating can see when someone falls, when someone's spins travel, when someone's goe is too high, when their technique is wrong. I know its nothing big but with the top ice dance teams, its much harder to tell who is really not good and whos deserving of their scores compared to ladies. So i actually dont think this can go on for much longer. All was going well for her until russian nationals where people just had enough. I was so suprised to see diana in 8th after the sp, seems like the judges arent protecting her as much anymore. What im trying to say is more people know about the eteri bonus now, and its glaring how much its infected skating, so to protect the sport they are going to need to do something about it I hope that after these olympics she will be no more

My thoughts listening to this: Let's have a moment of appreciation and celebration for skaters (for example, Yuzuru, Jason, Liza with her jump quality) who ignore the out of whack judging and still aim to judge themselves by their own standards and develop to meet them. Skaters shouldn't need to be their own judging system to this extent, but it's still just appreciated. This also for coaches as well that aren't going for the cheated tricks. I'm just genuinely putting hope out into the universe for skaters like these to continue to exist against the current.

What the hell feelings about Anna or anybody else have to do with bribing of judgement, cruelty in training children, at least 5-times higher percentage of physical injuries children obtain in Tutberidze's training compared to any other places? Anna is not guilty about that, the other girls also are not to be blamed, they just work obediently every day and want to win. But I am not to be expected to admire that Anna is brought to continue to win via doping stimulations, and if it works, the other children will follow the raw. Trainer's team should not use illegal methods in their work, and no reason to applaud if they DO use.

She has what it takes to be champion, but concentrating on just her jumps isn't helping her much in competitions. Scherbakova was going to be part of the Olympic team no matter what. Glad for Smart/Diaz on getting the spot for Spain; that Zorro FP is Olympic. Didn't bother with watching Pairs or Ice-dance, since this was an all-Russian event.

Trusova has everything to be battling the gold medal with Kamila, but sadly that train already left, it’s known from a very long time that she does not care about PCS, it’s has been mentioned before, I think eteri said once that she does not want to improve on those and even Yana, Plushenko’s wife said one time something along the lines that, if she had listened to plushenko she would have won worlds but she just wanted to do all these quads, so I think Trusova’s goal is to land all these quads and then hope for the best, but I feel like even if she does, they will give kamila the gold medal anyways based just on PCS

I don’t think Trusova has much potential for gold but sure for silver. I do wish that she would take out the triple axel from her short - she just can’t land it at the moment in competition- and maybe go for 2-3 quads and not phone in the rest. I have seen her put more effort into her PCS. So she has it in her, but when she tries to go for the Axel or five quads, understandably, she just doesn’t have much else left. If the jumps don’t go well, she’s struggling to podium (and does so because she’s so generously scored). If she just would be a bit less ambitious with her programs and skated cleaner she would podium anyway Imo.

I have to say, team StepBuk really convinced me with this outing. They just looked a bit faster, stronger, and smoother. Sasha, and her long legs especially, just looks so floaty and dynamic when she's controlled. I love the mum opening piece but still dislike the R&J vocal edit. Still, the music is better than most of the other top teams this season, IMO. The judging in the Women's event is just....I can't even. It's such a hot mess. Obviously the judges haven't read the judging book for this quad and it's most noticeable in this discipline. Moment of the week: Deniss! Short Deniss, long Deniss, medal Deniss, gala Deniss....so happy for him! Edit: The Eteri Storyboard this week was a 10....with a +5 GOE!

Anna's ability to deal with pressure is something I admire, others would have had a total meltdown in the free facing the same pressure, wow! The PCS for all the Russian ladies were just ridiculous -- I swear there's a rule somewhere that you shouldn't get a 9 PCS if you fall, and in any event none of them should be getting 9s. Anna maybe 8, Trusova solid 7, Kamila 8.5, something like that. Also, just chuck the GOE guide out the window, clearly it's just moral guidance at this point :P
