This and That: Daniel Grassl to Team Tutberidze, 2023 Korean Nationals

Спорт

This week, Daniel Grassl traveled to Moscow to work with Team Tutberidze and the Russian media has reported that he intends to stay and be coached by Eteri Tutberidze and her minions. Meanwhile, Jia Shin narrowly outskated Yelim Kim at 2023 Korean Nationals. Jun Hwan Cha, Haein Lee and Kim Chae-yeon also highlighted the event. Piper Gilles and Paul Poirier announced that they were withdrawing from the 2023 Canadian Figure Skating Championships due to an appendectomy. We break it all down and preview the 2023 Canadian Nationals and 2023 University Games on the latest edition of 'This and That'.

    Wish KFed had supported her a bit more with PCS. She didn't have the strongest skates, but they could have placed her in the top 6, 7, or 8 skaters if they'd wanted. And they could alter their criteria to keep her on the national team since she had the second most successful Grand Prix season of any Korean women this year, not to mention coming in 6th at the Olympics. They could have sent her to smaller competitions this spring, or even saved her a spot for 4 Continents. It just feels like they're hanging her out to dry. I feel for her, too. But there's a long time before the 2026 Olympics and this could be a minor set back in the big picture.

    @@quintupleaxel it's pretty commonplace to align PCS with reputation and consistency. Compare Young You to Jun, for instance, who also came around 5th or 6th at the Olympics and who also just narrowly missed out on qualifying for the GPF. He was awarded PCS in the 9s because he's consistently been Korea's top male skater for years. Young You has also been really consistent over the last 4 years as Korea's top or second best skater, but when she fell they gave her PCS in the low 8s. It's an inconsistency... Although I acknowledge that awarding PCS based on reputation/consistency is controversial... But if one skater is going to get that cushion, then the system should work the same for all.

  • @quintupleaxel

    @quintupleaxel

    @@zackwilson8701 but why would or should they in this case? Junhwan is clearly better than his nearest rival by a considerable margin. Womens is a much deeper field, and Young You is not leading it this season. Also Junhwan Cha often (but not always) gets 9+ PCS because his presentation and skating skills are absolutely outstanding. He's Korea's top skater because of those things. Not everything is politics- sometimes someone is just very good. There's bound to be politics in sport, but your opinion on how the scoring works is conjecture.

    Daniel is DAMN well aware of the backlash he has gotten over having been "caught" training at Sambo 70 (I don't think he has made the change to Eteri though as this video implies, I think he was just visiting to spend a period there) as he turned off his comment section on Instagram because they were mostly criticizing him for his actions (even fellow Italian skating fans). Daniel being there isn't just an issue of working with a team known for abusing, starving, and drugging their students (his presence there tells us that he's more than okay with the abuse), but also the fact that he is willingly training in a country whose president raged war on an innocent country. Not only has Italy been a huge refugee country for Ukraine, but Daniel's coach, Lorenzo Magri, was one of the coaches that took in Ivan Schmuratko during the off-season since he couldn't train in Ukraine so Daniel probably would have seen first-hand how the war affected him. His choice to train in Russia in very disrespectful to fellow Ukrainian skaters. I will also make a correction. Team Tutberidze does technically have a male skating internationally. They have Nika Egadze of Georgia training under them (Dudakov was with him at GP de France and NHK Trophy.

    Jonathan, the reason Jun doesn’t do more than one quad of the same kind is his consistency I believe, because one has to be a combo. He’s someone that suffers from URs. And the reason that you can only repeat one quad and overall, repeat two different jumps is so skaters would be practicing a whole variety of jumps, and not just the lutz, flip, and toe for example.

    Re: Deanna. Two points. 1. Without knowing the details of her situation, unfortunately researchers are finding that even a mild COVID-19 infection can cause immune dysfunction for an extended period of time after "recovery". It's possible she may have had a prior infection which is making it harder to kick the RSV. Lots of folks right now are getting "the cold from hell", the UTI they just can't shake, etc, and don't realize they may be unknowingly dealing with this afteraffect. 2. Long COVID is not the only post-viral illness out there (I likely got POTS from the flu). Rest is truly key during/after illness! Tiffany Chin adopted them by the 85 season. Can't seem to identify tan skates on any females earlier than that.

    It's weird and not weird at the same time that Dany chose to go there. As you said, he has spoken positively about Anna (he said that they are friends) and Tut in the last few areas (a bit tone-deaf if you ask me). Also, YGA seems to have a good relationship with Russia and took in Ekaterina and then Morisi. Also, Nicolaj Memola was training with Mishin but he's half-Russian so I guess it's sort of fine there. This filo-Russian tendency that we have in the Italian figure skating community has always been a bit weird to me but it has given some results in the past. Anyway, Dany's choice is very inconsiderate and weird at the moment considering 1) the shitshow Beijing and the doping, 2) her brutal methods and 3) the damn war. I'm assuming the pressure of not wasting another reason, undesirable results in the GP series, maybe see Ilia (seems friends with him too) get a medal, and the media attention (compounded with the results of Charlene/Marco, the pairs and Nicolaj) might have taken a toll here and send him to the wrong direction. He good kid and desperately wants to grow (they should have definitely helped him more when he was younger, but he was getting the scores) and achieve results as seniors, but he probably doesn't get that he needs time and is really a decent coach definitely not Tut. This choice and the negative press that comes with it can only worsen his performance in the next events. Hope the FISG can step in and steer him in the right direction. maybe towards some other US/Canadian coaches. P.S. I wonder also what happens when it comes to the fact that he (as the rest of the national team) is part of the military sports groups. He's part of the Police and he's training with a country we are sort of at war with!

I don't necessarily care about blending outfits, but if they wanted to, I think it would be nice to change up skate colors, even to include colors sometimes. (I don't skate, but it seems they don't change skates that often so maybe it's not so convenient to change skate colors and have different pairs, etc.) I'm typing as I'm listening, I didn't know Hubble wore black skates. @@L.Spencer It can take awhile to break in skates, so yeah it would not be practical to have multiple pairs in different colours or anything like that. Customs can take months to make as well. For elite skaters most would have 1-2 pairs of boots per year, the rest of us probably a pair every 2-3 years. I'm not sure about wearing black unless you were wearing black pants, I personally think it would look weird with a dress, but each to their own. You can also get boot covers if you really want to change the colour often, a lot of people do this for shows.

    I've never been Daniel fans so his move to ET never really bothers me as much compared to his fans. He is losing a lot of fans though cause many criticize his decision. Not surprised he chose Eteri because he had mentioned in the past about his interest to train there and he's such a fan of Anna. But I'm still surprised he's STILL going after the war broke. This is my main concern rather than why he is with Eteri The thing with Daniel, I've never really liked his skating. I think he has bad posture, he's flexible but he's doing weird things with his limbs, super bad jumping technique, and subpar skating skills. The only positive thing is that he commits to choreography. I think most fans like him because of his off ice personality, he's a fanyu (hence many hanyu fans like him as well), and overall looking like a nice guy. But after this not sure how he would recover - character wise
