This and That: 2017 Worlds - Ladies

Спорт

The 2017 World Figure Skating Championships featured numerous historic achievements. In addition to the record-setting performances by Evgenia Medvedeva, the Canadian ladies landed two medalists on the medal rostrum for the first time. Anna Pogorilaya, Ashley Wagner, Karen Chen and the rest of the field gave us plenty to talk about during our recap of the ladies' event.

12:19 Ashley Wagner 20:16 Karen Chen 26:35 Mariah Bell 33:15 Kaetlyn Osmond + Gabrielle Daleman / my personal opinion: Agree with La, I prefer Gabby over Osmond 37:38 Evgenia Medvedeva / Agree with Dave, that Osmond's program is incoherent, and Evgenia can do a Trump program 40:53 Anna Pogorilaya 46:01 Maria Sotskova / Sorry I still can't get into her skating yet, she needs to get better programs. 46:24 Mai Mihara / Sacrificing an American spot or any kind of magic would not help Mao to PyeongChang because she said goodbye already :'( Lord have mercy on figure skating... 48:06 Carolina Kostner / What's sad is that judges are helping European skaters and North American skaters but not Asian skaters, Mao and Satoko last year, Zijun Li this year are perfect examples 49:44 MK moment

was I the only one devastated by Anna Pogorilaya's failure? She never seemed to get the attention she deserved from Russian Federation, e.g. scoring lower in Russian Nationals than on the international stage; and the Federation's predicament regarding WTT judging by the google translated version of the article seemed particularly cruel. Yet she's the only Russian lady who's been on the world team the entire last quad, and that says a lot in this crazy era of Russian lady figure skating. she's only 19, jumping to the conclusion that her career is over seems unfair and harsh... I do hope she comes back strong and consistent next season, slams the gpf and lands herself in the olympic team.

When she's at her best I think she skates better than Evgenia. But I think part of that comes out of over-doing it. The fact that there are so many Russian women biting each other's heels, making it unlikely her career could come back despite the fact that she is for sure one of the 10 best in the world is sad. :-/

Not rooting for an American in figure skating is no different than cheering for the football team that isn't from your home town. It's important to respect all the athletes for their art form but there is no harm if your favorite athlete is from another country. That is the beauty of this sport. Every athlete is different and great in their own way, and different athletes appeal to different people. I will always cheer for Ashley because I adore her, but I also love Evengia, Anna and Gabby. I mean, don't go booing or wishing anyone would fall, but to each their own.

I feel you Dave, I get all kinds of flack for rooting for Javi and Patrick over Nathan since I'm American. Skating does transcend borders. La, I'm with you! I would have put Gabby ahead of Kaetlyn! Osmond is getting tons of gifts for sloppy skates. I find Gabby more dynamic overall and think she was cleaner at this competition. Osmond looks like she has to battle through a program not to fall apart. I'm at ease while watching Gabby, even if she falls. I adore my Diva Wagner, and this was my favorite program she ever put out there, but this particular performance didn't have the jumps there. And without those, there is no case to be made. I have to wonder if Raf isn't totally over her at this point. 7th? Her worst result in about 4 years. This doesn't bode well for next year. She's not getting any gifts from the USFS. She either delivers or both she and Gracie can watch the Olympics on TV. We all counted Karen out and she's the only one who looked like a possible challenger for the podium. All this talk about 3 spots is silly to me - we have 3 spots for 3 women who don't have a realistic prayer of making the podium. Russia has the top two spots locked up now that Zagitova is coming to the senior level. I'd rather have one spot for a true contender.

I have several thoughts about all of this. First, I think there should be a TSL fantasy pool for Medvedeva's program next year. It's one of the most exciting questions in ladies skating today. ;). Second, I agree with Jonathan, but I think Karen Chen should skate to even more esoteric 20th century French music, like Lili Boulanger or something. I think she could pull it off. Third, I really missed Satoko Miyahara. I hope she's back next season. I'm not Japanese (Kori Ade), but she and Marin Honda are two of my favorite ladies currently! Anyway, already can't wait to see what next season brings. This video made my heart happy.

TurboCMinusMinus Not sure how a calculator will help you, I meant just a fairly tentative guess of what you think is the most probable. I guess I'll go ahead and say: Evgenia Medvedeva Alina Zagitova Anna Pogorilaya Satoko Miyahara Marin Honda Katelyn Osmond Grrrr there are so many more! Other possibilities (in my opinion): Karen Chen Gracie Gold Kaori Sakamoto Elena Radionova Stainaslava Konstantinova Carolina Kostner Yuna Shiraiwa Ashley Wagner Gabrielle Daleman Yelim Kim (competing senior next season right?) Edit: how could I forget about Polina Tsurskaya! If she can fix those URs, I'd say she would take Honda's spot in my GPF list.

Re Mariah competing with Ashley for Raf's time ..... this will be interesting. Mariah is a bit of a chameleon; if you'll remember when she was with Kori, she dyed her hair to match Kori's, and often managed to be photographed with Jason Brown. She followed Jason like a puppy. Now she's dying her hair to match Ashley's and is competing with Ashley for time? Mariah could do well to watch her back with Ashley rather than emulate her. Ashley is a master at psychological competition, and I do believe that part of Gracie's problem the past couple of years has had a lot to do with Ashley. Also, Mariah's success at Skate America had more to do with Kori's influence and the fact that she had made this successful transition to Raf and, in her eyes. had "made it." I believe that Mariah has great style and a lot of talent. I'd hate to see her future ruined due to her insecurity and dramatics. Possibly this won't be a very popular viewpoint, but it's my take ....
