@@jadezee6316it does give him an advantage tho. Maybe won't make his opponent underestimate him, but rather, make them feel the pressure of having to win because GMs can't lose to FM. Like a psychological trick

I'm getting some conflicting information. One source says, "to become GrandMaster attaining the title of International Master (IM) is essential." And then "Elo chess rating of at least 2500 at one time and three favorable results (called norms) in tournaments involving other Grandmasters, including some from countries other than the applicant's." So if someone can clarify, I would like to know...

  • @PsyloJ

It is possible to become a Grandmaster without ever having been an International Master. Larry Christiansen of the United States (1977), Wang Hao of China, Anish Giri of the Netherlands, Olga Girya of Russia (2021) and former world champions Mikhail Tal of the Soviet Union and Vladimir Kramnik of Russia all became Grandmasters without ever having been IMs. Bobby Fischer of the United States attained both titles solely by virtue of qualifying for the 1958 Interzonal (IM title) and 1959 Candidates Tournament (GM title), only incidentally becoming IM before GM. The more usual path is first to become an IM, then move on to the GM level.

You need 3 tournaments and rating, the title below is not required. You can also gain GM title if requirements are not met. World chess senior champion and candidate winner/champion challenger (maybe something more) are achievments that grant you GM title.
