Great to see that you are thoroughly enjoying this guitar (with Marshall Amp). I held off for quite some time, but decided it was worth a try. Despite high inflation, the price has not rocketed over the last year, even though the Pelham Blue is becoming harder to obtain (no longer listed new by Epiphone). Beats me why they would discontinue this fantastic colour...unless it's expensive to make. I have another great Epi Les Paul, the 'ES' version; same Probucker PuPs but a lighter semi-hollow construction (like the ES339). The 'Modern' will be slightly heavier, but with several bonus features (locking tuners, graphtec nut, ebony board, out of phase, CTS Pots, treble bleed, contoured heel, asymmetric neck profile, Kalamazoo headstock) 👍.

The color is awesome, probably why it's getting harder to find them. The EVH Wolfgang colors this year are absolute garbage.

@@oldguyjammin9732 Yes. That might be a good show - choosing pickups and installation - SD 59 pups may be a good choice. It depends. FYI: I have 3 LP’s. One Epi with Seymour Duncan Hotrodded pups. It competes quite well with my Traditional and is better, i believe, than my Tribute. I look forward to your videos. Thank you.

@@YatJac - dude, I appreciate what you’re saying cause I am playing my Vintage brand LP and the pickups are super nice! (Wilkinson) They’ve got that tone, and would be hundreds less than Custom Shops. I’ll start looking at SD 59s. Thanks Yat Jac!

They are nice for sure and I still have mine. Yesterday I picked up a used JVM and the dude had an old Gibson Classic lite hooked up to it - a limited run from Gibson I believe but much lighter and thinner than the traditional.

I've been thinking about getting a Studio Classic JCM800 head. Two things holding me back are the price, and I'm not a big fan of the V-Type speakers in the cab. Did you sell off your DSL after getting the JCM? Also, I'm looking forward to your bright cap removal. It does wonders on the original JCM800 amps and I'm curious if the tone results are the same on the SC20H. If so, you'll get a really nice range of low gain tones when the cap is removed, and it won't affect the full preamp gain tone.

I did not sell my DSL20... no way. That’ll be my ‘grab and go’ combo should I play out. I find the V-type adequate and certainly better than the 70/80s. I plan to replace one of the V-type with an Emminence DV77 that I have which will give it more and tighter bottom end. I’m looking forward to the cap removal too, after mentioning it I really notice now how the bass goes absent when the gain is turned down.

Clipping out the bright cap should totally fix that issue. The V-Type is a good speaker for sure. I find it to have an aggressive character with distortion that can work well for modern music. I have no experience with the DV. I'll have to check that one out. For the SC20H I think the G12M65 Creamback, Marshall Heritage, or WGS ET65 would be better matches than V-Type. If the DV and V-Type go well together then you'll have some nice recording options in that 2x12.

BTW, my grab & go amp is a DSL5C! (I angle it up towards me on a stand and my drummer uses an electric kit, so volume is not an issue.) It cuts well and sounds very good without the need for any overdrive/boost. I've been considering the SC20H because it has a more classic overdrive type sound, but honestly I can get very close on the DSL5 classic channel with a "transparent" overdrive pedal pushing it. By transparent I mean an overdrive without the mid hump you get from a tubescreamer type. Note: I removed the bright cap from my DSL5C's classic channel. This makes it sound much fuller at cleaner settings. On the DSL20 you may want to change the classic channel bright cap from the stock 1000pF to 100pF, because the DSL20 has a fixed treble cut circuit in the phase inverter circuit. So, you'll probably need some bright cap to keep your cleaner settings sounding good. The 1000pF cap is just way too much IMO.

@@danz4904 - You may very well be right re the G12M65... have one in my DSL20 and love it. I also have a WGS ET65 but don’t think it would have the overall ‘ummph’ but could be wrong, I have one in a 1x12 and it’ll start to phart when pushed. Thanks for you suggestions and the bright cap mod “how to” - we’ll see soon.

@@oldguyjammin9732 The G12M65 is my favorite current Celestion. I haven't experienced any issues with the WGS ET65 lacking lows or pharting out, but it's a stiffer/cleaner speaker and I like it best in open back cabs. I'm really curious to hear if the DV blends well with a V-type.

I would buy one in graphite black If it was a solid body and no pickguard.

Locking tuners ARE for ease of string change as well as speed of string changes.

I agree, but it seems like I’m always hearing people say “and it has locking tuners, so your guaranteed to stay in tune” as if it’s a complete locking system ;-)

@@oldguyjammin9732 you can run less wraps, which helps with tuning, but the string path of the LP headstock is the Achilles heal of the design when it comes to staying in tune. At least with the shallow headstock angle the Epi is arguably a better design than a Gibson in that regard!

@@scod3908 - yes, gotcha. There are some string tree type gizmos out there to straighten the splay angles on the head stock that I may look at, but so far so good.

@@oldguyjammin9732 You definitely need one haha! It was so nice trying out in the shop, '61 has thinner neck than Standard, (Slim Taper). It was pretty nice.

I love mine, but the frets were rough and so far out of level and action so high that it was practically unplayable out of the box. Not sure if this was covid production related as mine was particularly bad. Would recommend budgeting in a comprehensive setup and fret job into the purchase price, or buy from a retailer which uses a PLEK system and/or has a competent technician on site. With the frets sorted, it plays really well and is an excellent guitar for the price (less than 25% of the Gibson LP Modern!)

Yaaa, I know what you mean and is why I said “I got a good one” cause you really never know these days, lol. Mine is light and has that “right” feel to it. I’m actually thinking about putting a pair of Wilkinson pups in it. I’ve got a pair in my Vintage brand LP and it sounds amazing.

​@@oldguyjammin9732 most owners report that the frets are unfinished and require minor work and polishing, but unfortunately mine was drop shipped to me during covid in a rough state. I spoke with 2 techs and made some measurements with feeler gauges, both recommended I warranty it rather than fix it as in their view it needed extensive work and several low/damaged frets replaced. I weighed my options, bought the tools and had a go myself, one of the advantages of owning the Epi at 1/4 cost of the Gibson is not worrying too much! ~$100 in tools, an afternoon of fun in the shed, and I'm 95% happy. I now also have the skills to do some minor fret work on my 6 other guitars :)

If people want a modern LP style guitar that has some updated features and a higher QC out of the box I'd probably recommend a PRS Zach Myers Signature. They look great, PRS SE range have a good track record in quality, and they have updated features where the Epi Modern retains some more antiquated designs: The PRS headstock has a better string path to hold tuning, the single piece bridge style is probably better for tone/sustain (the antiquated 2-piece isn't needed for a solid body guitar), pickup covers look great but we all know bare pickups have a clearer and more defined sound. The main things the Epi has over it are the locking grovers with tulips and the push/pull pots.

Hi there, was it you that wrote about the bright cap mod on the JCM800...? I didn't write it down and my comments only go back a month on KZread. Would you mind telling me again which cap it's likely to be? I know it comes of the center tap lug of the 'gain/volume' knob so it should be easy-ish to find. Thanks

No, but I pull off in the up direction, when finger tapping anyway. Single hand pull offs (trills) are usually downward I guess but I haven't had that issue.

Yes my hahahaha string swips off the finger board just sometimes playing cords , Let me know if you figured it out , I'm thinking about trying to Re slot the saddle on the bridge b**** our baby put a whole new saddle down , and my nut is a mess also, the high and low 8th string are way too low and the middle strings or too high you make a cord on the 2nd Friday accord and it's been out of tune So let me know if you figure thing anything out thanks

@@jasonnorris5298 - consider the EarVana compensated nut. It's $40 but you can cut it yourself and it really helps with proper intonation on Les Paul guitars. I put one on my Epi Modern and love it.

You haven't seen my sanding video then... takes about 5 minutes and turns that sticky glass into velvety smooth butter. I agree with you, hate gloss finished necks.
