    Thank you. 54 years shooting with one eye closed. I went to the range after watching your video and shot two eyes open following your instruction and it was magic. Totally changed my shooting, now I shoot two eyes open. Forget the master eye!

    I'm so glad you touched on the subject of poor teaching as a headnote. One can practice for a 100 years the wrong way and never be good, but 1 minute of proper teaching can profit so much more. This holds true in many types of short range shooting. Doesn't matter if it's a shot gun a bow or a sling shot

    Doug, thank you from another Doug. For long I have tried to understand what caused this business in some, all novice, shooters to lay their head over to one side. The conclusion I came to was they were trying to get their master eye over the barrel, as in right handed, left eye dominant. Now I see that it is mostly a gun mounting issue. The problem, as usual, refers to a failure of a basic, which failure is mounting first to the shoulder. The solution, as you so clearly show, is mounting to the cheek first, which will cause the master eye to naturally align itself directly down the barrel, then pull the gun into the shoulder. This will also reveal, to a knowledgeable coach, a gun fit issue. Thanks again, this clears up something that has long been a mystery to me.

    I think I actually am left eye dominant but right handed. I discovered it in vr shooting. Then I tried an experiment trying to look through a straw with both eyes open. I could do it easily with my left eye, but just couldn’t with my right eye.

    Interesting. Will try these tips tonight. In my case my non-dominant eye automatically focuses on the vent holes on the side of the raised rib, which comes off at an angle from the perspective of my non-dominant eye, as opposed to the straight top of the rib that my dominant eye sees, as this view occupies less space in my vision. I hope the tips in this video will solve this!

    As a beginner I do have an issue with eye dominance, I shoot right handed, but my left eye is dominant, I'm mounting the gun to my cheek, and the gun fits fine so my right eye looks down the rib, problem is my left eye is forcing my to shoot right of the targets, the simplest thing to do is close my left eye, and that pulls it back to the left, but I then loose speed and depth perception. I have found a small piece of tape on my glasses in the correct place, blocks my view of the barrels, but not the targets, forcing my right eye to correctly aim.

    Well I’m kinda stuck because my right eye can barely see, even with glasses. I’m not left eye dominant, I’m right eye useless! If you were in front of me I would see you, but you’d be an undefined blob of colour. I’m going to have to attempt to shoot left handed. I don’t even know where to start to learn to do that. Did you happen to come across anything that might help me when you were figuring out what to do for your issue?

    I wish u had a similar video regarding pistols..i cant seem to close my left eye properly to save myself..im great with long rifles though was i have a trick i use to block out the light to my left eye..i shoot right handed..my trick is to semi clear tape over the left side of my shooting glasses ..it works with pistols too , but just wish i had a better solution..

    I shoot pistols righty but my left eye is dominant. Try turning your head 30° or so to the opposite side of your dominant eye. And keep both eyes open. Works wonders for me and you’ll never have to tape your glasses again

    I am direct with the gun, that is, right finger on the trigger, I see better at close range with the right but better at the distance with the left, even though I have good vision in the distance with the right, my director eye is left, when I try to shoot with both eyes open I always see two barrels and two plates, what can I do? thanks in advance from portugal

    What about the other 25%? Is there another video on that? I am right handed, but have a damaged right eye, and have to use my left eye for sighting as I can't see clearly enough with my right eye. How would you best address that? Those who know more than I say that a crossover stock is probably not worth the effort, but other than 'shoot left-handed', no one had any better suggestions.

  • @TSCTheshootingchannel

    Hi Nicholas. yes this video doesn't address your situation where your right eye doesn't see well enough to shoot. A crossover stock is one possibility; shooting left handed is not as bad as it might sound, have you tried it?

    Thanks - I have, and can do it with marginal success, but it does not feel at all comfortable. I wonder whether some form of offset bead to correct for the use of a misaligned eye might help, assuming some form of standard range setting; alternatively, learning to assess where I have to point the gun relative to the target to have a reasonable chance of hitting it!

    @@nickcallington9273Nick, @cratxn1 suggested you watch a video that might solve the problem. The video does not clearly express the solution so I will state it clearly for you. The answer is that cross-dominance does not matter IF (1) you have a good mount AND (2) you maintain focus on the target. I learned this from a member of an Air Force shooting team member. I was at a skeet tournament and he saw me shooting with scotch tape on the left lens of my shooting glasses (because I am left eye dominant and I shoot right handed). He explained that the tape was not necessary. All I needed was to ensure I had a good, solid mount AND that I maintained laser focus on the target. It just takes discipline NOT to look at your front sight. If you do your dominant eye takes over. Your laser focus on the target and good mount ensures that the gun is pointed where you want it so you don’t need to look at the sight and cross-dominance problem disappears.

    I took some tests with my fingers, and found out that my dominant eye is left, and i am right handed. This would probably be a REAL master eye problem, right? Or would fitment and mounting still correct the issue?

  • @orion7873

    @orion7873

    Yep, it's pretty common. You can keep shooting hand handed, close an eye and only ever be an ok shot... or you can practice shooting left-handed for a few months and that seems to work for a lot of people... but it does take time. Me personally, I didn't enjoy shooting left-handed... I just close my left eye.

    This rule only applies to shotguns. What about stationary targets like a sitting duck. Are you supposed to keep both eyes open not look down the barrel and not line it up with the front sight?

    coomer point at something in the distance with both eyes open. If you’re right handed close your left eye. If your finger no longer lines up with what you’re pointing at you’re left eye dominant i.e you have a ‘master eye problem’. I have it.

    What a terrible demonstration. At 2.01 he is meant to be demonstrating a perfect gun mount and how this will solve the wrong master eye problem but he is still using his right eye despite shooting from the left shoulder.

  • @StrictlyShootingUK

    I think you've misunderstood - it's not a wrong master eye problem, it's another problem which is wrongly diagnosed as a master eye problem. I filmed that piece, and he was actually using his left eye (correctly for a left-handed shot) and (correctly) keeping his right eye open. Because he doesn't hold 100% rock steady aim on the lens, you've assumed he's aiming with the right eye.

  • @nickchloeclaire

    @nickchloeclaire

    +James Marchington I have not misunderstood at all. I am very aware of what he is trying to explain and I agree with the argument that incorrect gun mount and gun fit can cause problems, but it's strange how at 1.47 when he closes his right eye he has correct alignment with the camera, but when he keeps both eyes open and uses the "correct" gun mount he is very obviously using his right eye as the master eye and is not aiming at the camera. I agree with the theory but as I initially said it's a terrible demonstration.

    nickchloeclaire - I think your perspective is locked into the master eye/eye dominance issue. When he shoots with both eyes open AND concentrates on the target NOT some bead or even the barrels...his innate athleticism can put the shot string where it needs to be, provided his gun fit is close and his mount is him bringing the gun to his face and NOT taking his face down to the gun.

    This is horrible information! Don't fall for the British accent. When you have a new shooter trying to shoot clays you should start pre-mounted. The gun mount comes later.

  • @TSCTheshootingchannel

    Appreciate your interaction Chuck, but you're wrong here. First, this is about people who have been shooting a while and been told they have a master eye problem. Yes a total beginner would do well to pre-mount the gun for their first few clays, but you still want the gun mounted correctly and the eye correctly aligned with the rib. Otherwise the beginner may be diagnosed with a 'master eye problem' which isn't.

    Chuck Dean ......what rubbish!!! The gun mount, feet in the correct position, correct use of the body, balance etc comes way before the student pulls the trigger. You must become familiar with the gun before you go out and squeeze the trigger on a live cartridge.
