I have had a number of lessons where they have said that eye dominance issues are causing my lack of ability. I have been suggested all sorts of things from patches, blinking dominant eye, shooting left handed, and none have worked. In my last lesson I was told to try and miss the target as that may help. Obviously it didn’t. If you could recommend a good instructor close to Norfolk that would be great. Many thanks.

For 55 years I shot left eye closed (left eye dominate). Took a lesson and switched to left handed shooting. It took about a year to get comfortable with it. Now, I can shoot both eyes open left and right handed.

I've liked guns with bead style front beads in the past just for their looks, like on a game gun. Recently, my new F16 which has a fibre optic bead, seems easier to shoot both eyes open or lessens the need for me to squint with my non shooting eye. I think the brightness of the bead seems to help draw the eye down the rib and that's without aiming, I'm fairly confident that I don't aim the gun per se.

I am a newbie at Skeet. I tried both alternating one eye closed, both eyes open. I shot much better with both eyes open. Much easier to really focus on the rings of the clay and I found I was quicker on swinging the shotgun because I was quicker on acquiring the target. But I found that for extremely close targets (

George Digweed also advises to shoot both eyes open and in case of eye dominance issues, to stick a small piece of obstruction on eye glasses, where the wrong eye is.

When I focus on a distant target (the clay) I see two barrels in my 'out of focus' near peripheral vision (I shoot an Over and Under before I get the SbS comments!). When shooting and focussing on the clays although I know it's the left hand barrel I should 'use' from my periphery (I'm right eye dominant and shoot from the right shoulder), it's not always that easy. A patch on my left glasses lens helps a lot, particularly when shooting Skeet, ABT and DTL because I know roughly where the target will come from and I don't need to engage the full range of the two-eye peripheral vision from but for ESP and when game shooting it's really challenging, the patch definitely doesn't help here as for high incomers the bird disappears as I overtake it for the shot without having the full left eye peripheral vision input. I've been told that squinting my left eye just before taking the shot will help, I'm going to give that a go - frustrating!!

Instinctive shooting is incredible! Starting with a proper gun fit, keeping both eyes on the target, then it doesn't matter which direction or what speed the target is travelling. With both eyes on the target, your eyes report to the brain which in turn directs your hands to position the gun into the proper lead, without you having to think about it. I shot "one eye open", looking down the barrel for 55 years of wingshooting. Two years ago I endeavored to learn the "Instinctive" method of shooting. At present I shoot instinctively and it is truly a relief. No concern of what the target is doing. Focus on the front of the target and when the stock welds to your cheekbone, pull the trigger. I've hit skeet up to 70 yds never thinking about the distance, angle, or speed. The biggest issue I've had is making sure I "don't" look at the barrel as I'm coming to mount. It takes a bit of discipline and focus to accomplish this method correctly. But the rewards are well worth it when you witness your shooting game increase and your wingshooting go from average to WOW! Your hunting and shooting buddies will take notice when you shoot a limit of ducks with a handful of shells instead of a couple of boxes worth.

I'm a beginner and bought a cheap, twenty year old F. A. I. R. Master Trap for 300 quid. It ticked all the boxes I'd been told to look for (reasonable 'nick', weighed about 8lb, 30" barrels with full set of chokes) so I snapped it up. It wasn't until I got it in the back yard and started pointing it at sparrows in broad daylight (unloaded of course!) WITH ONE EYE CLOSED that I realised the stock was a good half inch too high. I wasn't going to ruin a perfectly good stock on a cheap gun (was I?) so after some experimentation with bits of old dowel, etc. I eventually remedied the problem with an after-market 12mm high plastic add-on rib; It now comes straight up and zeroed in every time, so problem solved. My point is this; Sure keep both eyes open when chasing clays, but if you need to aim (and you do sometimes need to aim... even in the shop) your going to have to close one eye.

I used to shoot one eye closed until I visited clay ground in early july, first time for 3 years. I know that I have got left eye dominant, and I am right hand person. Instructor from clay ground put a small( ~1cm ) patch from paper tape on my left lense.Just on top of it and in the middle. Big enough to see one barrel after gun mount, small enough use both eyes open when looking for a target. The score was about 70% hit in olympic skeet and some sporting targets. I am more than happy and I know that I will use that method in future.

It's so odd to me how passionate and vile people can get about this topic. (Due note that there are numerous champions who either only have one eye, or shoot with an eye all the way shut, squint the off eye, or wear a patch over the off eye). I suspect the reason this problem continues and is forever debated is that too many zero championship "coaches" don't have a clue what the issues are because they don't have the issues. Many have no idea that it's not just somebody shooting from the "wrong" shoulder... It is not simply people shooting from the wrong shoulder, but people who have some form of dominance that is less pronounced or switches in certain instances. In my personal experience I have noticed, doing numerous eye dominance tests, that if my head is tilted slightly to the right, I test left eye dominant. Likewise, if my head is tilted slightly to the left I'm right eye dominant. When we mount the gun we are putting one eye slightly forward of the other. In my case, either side I mount causes the wrong eye to take over. Therefore, when I shoulder on the right side my left eye tries to take over and when I shoulder on the left side my right eye tries to take over. If either worked better I would be using that shoulder.(If you shoulder from the opposite side and you don't see the pronounced double image I'd learn to shoot from that side) In my instance, it doesn't matter and I suspect I might not be alone. Therefore, a solution is needed to prevent crossfiring. Find what works for you and adapt. You do you. Call for the bird, see the bird with both eyes, start tracking and as this process is happening then squint or close the eye... you've already used both eyes to tell your brain the distance, direction, speed etc and as you close down the off eye you'll have a less confusing sight picture and the gun will be pointed where you think it is pointed. Or wear a patch on your glasses(works great for me and I then I don't have to squint). And quit listening to these "experts" who don't share this problem tell you how to fix it... They have never seen what you are seeing. They all think they know better, but they do NOT know what they do NOT know. They are no different than a man explaining what child birth feels like to a woman.

Wow, I'm surprised that there are so many people trying to shoot against their eye dominance. Identifying your dominant eye is a key part of those first few steps into shotgun shooting, even before gun fit in my opinion. You are going to have an uphill battle fighting against the way your brain prefers to 'see' things, and taking one eye out of the equation makes it more difficult to judge the speed and distance of a target. I am right handed, slightly shortsighted and have astigmatisms in both eyes. My right eye is definitely my 'best' one and I shoot a rifle from the right shoulder. However, I shoot a shotgun from my left shoulder as I'm left eye dominant and that is definitely the one my brain favors with moving targets. All the shotguns I own are technically right handed but they were selected because they have neutral cast stocks which makes fitting them to a lefty relatively straight forward. You don't need to spring for an expensive/rare L/H gun if you don't want to. If you've discovered that you're left eye dominant but only have a right hand gun it is quite possible you could make it work with the right advice. I think that just as good gun fitting should help you to choose/modify/adjust a gun to suit your natural physical attributes, it should do so taking into account your natural 'visual' abilities as well.

I unconsciously seem to dim/close my left eye on a long (50 yard +) crosser where i have plenty of time to calculate the target, i know i ought not to but it's kind of instinctive for me. That is an issue i need to work on. A high tower clay, both eyes open, no problem. If i closed an eye on these targets i wouldn't be able to see through the gun! Any other ESP targets that i have less time to evaluate the clay i just go through it with both eyes open, no problem.

I funny enough agree with all discussions or even arguments on this subject as I believe it is all down to training and the length of time shooting or longevity of shooting. I myself have a long long time experience as a rifle shot so concentrating in my case as a right hand shooter my left eye closed was a given. On progressing to clay shooting I still close my left eye before taking the shot and have a decent +70% hit rate of which I am happy with as I do not shoot competitively. For me it is how you started to shoot clay or game and what works for you. I am sure that there are highly respected world class shooters who have just one eye through circumstance is all they have to work with, and respect to them. I think it is a ridiculous notion to say one or two eyes are needed to shoot anything. If you can hit your targets it's down to your hand eye coordination and how your brain handles the information presented to it. I have missed countless shots as I have arthritis in my index finger in cold weather but I still go and have a go. Whatever suits you is best! Muscle memory and the rest of it is the same as driving your car... Take care peeps and enjoy!!!

Gun fit is most important get that right your on a winner, I shot both eyes open for years till I was about 50 as my dominant eye the right one was looking down the barrel so I was able to keep both eyes open, then I found as my eyes changed and I needed glasses my left eye started to take over so as I was about to pull the trigger I dimmed the left eye and that worked well but things change so for over 20 years of my life I have been dimming my left eye and it's worked well, now in the last year or two things have changed again I am now 76 and my eyesight is not as good as it was, low and behold my right eye now is the one with better sight and is taken over again so I can now shoot with both eyes open especially at night when it's harder for me to see with old eyes, I do find in bright sunlight I do still out of habit dim my left eye lol. I have shot a lot of evening and morning at wildfowl still shoot pigeons and Woodcock and Snipe, I may not be as good a shot as I used to be but as my friends would say I can hold my end up on any day lol. I will add I had my own clay shoot for many years and did instruct, I must repeat the most important point is the gun must fit!!

What happens when you have sight in only one eye . Luckily I shoot right handed and my right eye is the one I have sight in . If a bird comes from the left I really struggle . Incomings are ok as are rabbits but high left going away are near impossible . I’m finding it difficult to get about 35 on a 50 bird shoot . I have a gun that fits ( Benelli 828U ) and Mount my gun correctly and consistently . Do I just have to accept that I won’t get any better . I do enjoy it non the less . 😁

I am a lefty that has only ever shot right handed, even a left handed bow is insanely awkward. But I have an astigmatism and my vision fluctuates a lot. Some days are great some days Im better off shooting both eyes closed. lol I have heard of vision strengthening exercises. Are there any that can be gone over to help my slightly visually stronger right eye win over my mentally stronger left eye? lol

I shoot with one eye closed and when I open both eyes I can see the top of the rib and the side of the barrels in one sort of merged image. I would also say I am right eye dominant when doing the finger sight test. Any thoughts people?

Train yourself to IGNORE that second image. Had a fellow shooter who was complaining that he had tried tape, blocking one lens, and all the other suggestions to learn how to shoot with both eyes and he asked me what I did. I told him I can see the second barrel but I simply ignore it. That round of Skeet he shot a 23 and thanked me for my advice. The next weekend he saw me again and insisted on paying for my ammo as we shot Skeet. BTW, by nature I am right eye dominate but 40 years of looking thru the viewfinder of an SLR camera has left me Selectively Dominant. When I am shooting a handgun if I shoot left handed I use the left eye, when I'm shooting right handed I use the right eye.

New shooter here. I’m right eye dominant and was told by an instructor to close my left eye…I couldn’t hit a tortoise with a handful of rice. I watch all the top shots such as Digweed and Childerhouse et al shoot with both eyes open and they all recommend it. I struggle to get on the target as it comes into view and feel I am playing catch up and rushing the shot. I have just tested to see how much more I can see with both eyes open and it is night and day - I just know it would give me more time to pick up the target and track it more efficiently. I don’t think anyone other than left eye dominant (right handed) shooters should be taught to shoot with one eye closed. Interestingly enough, my “instructor” hasn’t even spoken to me about gun fit - he just handed me his shotgun and showed me in 2 seconds how to mount it. Madness.

For me, because my "wrong" (left) eye is so strong, I have to close it. I aimed the gun at a point in the distance with my left eye closed... opened my left eye, and the gun looked like it was pointing at some trees about 15m to the right of the where it was really pointing. Just holding an arm out, my finger looks to be 2 inches away from where it really is... imagine multiplying that angle over 40 yards or more! So I've no choice but to keep an eye shut (confirmed by my instructor when I tried shooting two eyes open)... my accuracy dropped from low-80's% (one eye closed) to 0% (both eyes open - but might as well have had them both closed!) :D

I have only light perception in my right eye as the result of an accident when I was seven. I've been shooting left-handed for 79 years. Perceived light is not a problem for day to day activities, but it does bother me when shooting skeet. Closing the right eye isn't a solution because it causes me to squint the left. Tape doesn't work because the right eye is smaller as a result of the accident and the tape doesn't stay fastened. A black, right lens and a shield on the right bow of my shooting glasses solved my problem. If you can close the off-eye without squinting, do it. Tape the eye closed if you can do it with comfort. If that doesn't work, as an expedient, try covering the left lens with black electricians tape. That's what I did initially.

If you shoot with one eye, you wont be able to estamate de distance of the target, so you will never shoot that well. Its like driving a car, just try to drive with one eye open instead of both eyes open. I used to make the same mistake, I hitted about 11 clays on 25, now with both eyes open and a proper gunfit (switched to the B725) I hit 23 of 25. Big difference for me.
