EYE DOMINANCE.....WHAT TO DO.....Roger Pace

Спорт

We look at cross dominance and whether it's a big deal or not. An opinion is given on the products that are marketed to remedy the situation........opaque patches,long sighting beads,various gadgets to attach to your gun and shooting glasses.We discuss switching shooting hand and discuss the pros and cons.
There is a test for eye dominance using your gun.
Finally we look at what to do ...and it's all good news...Happy Shooting.....ROGER PACE

    I am 53 years old and I have been a life long shooter mainly pistol and I rifles. Shotgun shooting was mainly hunting. But recently retired from law enforcement after 33 years. So I started shooting sporting clays. Always knew that I am right eye dominant and I am left handed. Never realized the issue with cross Dominance as I would close my right eye. But I am definitely determined to overcome the problem and stop closing my right eye!!! It's a hard habit to break and I am fighting it every time I shoot. I have patched, used chapstick and bought the beads you talked about, not going through that again!!! I will get it straight!! Have a good one and May God bless y'all!!!

    I think your spot on Mr. Pace and I'll tell you why. I am cross eye dominant and with that said, every sport that involved me using some degree of precision, such as baseball, basketball, and golf, has never stopped me from achieving good results using my right hand in light of the fact that my left eye is dominant. As it relates to shooting, I think that so long as you don't look at the barrel and your mounting and gun fit are consistent then your eye dominance is irrelevant. Just look at the target and your brain should know what to do with the gun.

    I have been saying a lot of what you just did for about a year now. But I was checking dominance with finger. I always tell people to focus on a stationary object and mount while still focusing on object. It not only helps with eye dominance, but also not to sight down barrel. Thank you Roger, very good, simplistic explanation.

    Thank you sir. I'm about to start shooting shotgun this year. Never shot a gun before but I successfully passed the mandatory Canadian security in handling of firearms course. I found out in that course that I'm cross dominant left eye - right hand. I'm glad I've come across your video before starting shooting. I'll start learning the proper stance/mount etc from my left hand.

    Thank you Roger, you've put a lot of work into this and it's massively appreciated. I've not long started out, just bought my first shotgun and my coach's advise exactly mirrors yours (I'm right handed, left-eye dominant)- eyes open, look at the clay, ignore the gun. if you've got your mount and your lead right it'll break. Stop shooting a shotgun as if it were a rifle (One eye closed, staring at the bead/clay). Looking forward to watching more of your videos, thank you for contributing your knowledge to the community.

    Thank you, as A younger shooter who is cross dominant, I appreciate you making this video. It was easy to understand and reinforced my belief that my brain did most of the work. I currently use patches to cover my left eye. So when I go out to shoot again to practice, I'll see the results of taking off the patches. Again I appreciate you making this video.

    Great video. Love your style of teaching. I formerly closed my left eye, but switched to stereoscopic vision last year. It’s better. I acquire targets much faster, especially crossers. Forget about which eye is dominant. Perform the shooting basics and your targeting computer will adapt. I recently added a Shotkam. My trend was low left on misses. Amazing self coaching tool.

    you have a new cross eye dominant subscriber. I have been an avid pistol shooter for a decade, and have recently fallen in love with shotgun shooting. I have spent so much time on the pistol because I can simply present in front of my left eye. so far, when shooting the clays, I will mount the gun, check the bead with my left eye closed, then focus downrange for the clay. like Nora, I have been keeping my left eye closed. I will be experimenting with other methods in coming weeks. so far, I have done alright with closing my left eye. I also use my bead quite a bit on everything but crossers. just my way after shooting pistols for so long. I thoroughly enjoy your videos, and I appreciate you sharing your experience.

    Finally someone who understands the problem. Roger you are the first person I have heard to suggest to do the test with the gun . It is the ultimate test in my opinion and by the way this is what I have been doing with every new shooter for sometime now.It simply is the very best way to make the determination. I suggest all one eyed shooters give it a try they might just surprise themselves not all but many will.

    Hi Roger, first let me say I love your series of videos . I have learned so much from them. The eye dominance thing has got me stumped. I am left eye dominant and right handed. I dedicated an entire year to shooting with two eyes and the best I could do was hit straightaways maybe 60%. Forget it on anything going right or left (left being worse than right crossing targets ) I completely agree in theory that it shouldn’t matter as long as we are hard focused on the target. What I don’t understand is that my sense of where the gun is relative to the target can change dramatically while the bird is in flight. My periphery can sense the gun is where it needs to be and in an instant it can shift to four feet behind the bird. Sometimes my periphery catches the left side of the barrel instead of the center in the rib. When I check my gun mount, I have to close the left eye to get the beads to line up . What might be going wrong for me Roger? I’ve been shooting with the opaque dot on my left lense and my scores improved significantly. Keep up the great videos, I learn so much more from you than anyone.

  • @rogerpace9322

    @rogerpace9322

    Jeff...you say..."sometimes my periphery catches the left side of the barrel"...if you can see that then I would suggest that you are not 100% focussed on the clay...make sure your gun shoots where you look (pattern board) and then just look at the clay and shoot ...if you see your barrels you are aiming and not pointing. Do not think...see clay...shoot clay...stay well and thanks for your kind comments.

    Thank you for your excellent videos. Well spoken and to the point. I used to shoot for about 6 years at a yearly competition but stopped after team captain moved away and other guys quit. I am retiring soon and looking to get back into shooting. I shoot right handed but am left eye dominant and have problems with double vision. I keep both eyes open on skeet and close left eye after acquiring bird and only keep right eye open on trap. Seem to be better at trap but do good (17-20) at skeet. Biggest issue is with crossing birds especially on doubles. Have tried sporting clays and 5 stand some but shot very poorly (5-10). I even tried an attachment close to bead that blocked bead from my left eye and this helps but still can’t keep both eyes open. I am going to try some of your suggestions (I tried shooting left handed but hated it). I thoroughly enjoy your videos, tips and information. Keep up the videos. They are truly helpful

    I've never commented on youtube before but had to say thank you for this one. I'm left handed - right eyed, per the simple look at your finger trick. However, and as you so brilliantly mentioned, you should use your gun to determine eye dominance. Using my gun for the dominance proves that I'm left eyed dominant when shooting. There's a lot of people (and I was one of them) who put tape on their lenses and shouldn't be. VERY HELPFUL VIDEO!!!

    After shooting by closing my left eye just before the shot for 55 years I challenged myself and switched to two eyes open left hand. It took a couple of years of shooting to be consistent and shoot 24 or 25 reliably. Interestingly if I shoot right hand now I can do it both eyes open. Even more interesting is when I shoot left my old muscle memory closes my left eye and I still hit the target (happens a lot). You instruction makes total sense! Thanks.

    Roger, thank you for the great video on eye dominance. I have been shooting for 3 years and improving consistently. I shot sporting clays this summer and my scores were going up. Then I moved to 5 stand and did horribly. A shooting coach noticed I was left eye dominant even though I shoot right handed. I am not sure that is my problem after watching your video. I think 5 stand exposes other problems (how I stand, peripheral vision etc.) more so that skeet, trap or sporting clays. I am going to work on the other items first before I make a major shift to shooting left handed. I tried a couple of rounds left handed and it did not feel natural. Thank you again for your well narrated and clear video.

    Discovered last night that I am cross dominant. I'm a right handed shooter. I've been shooting since I was a child. I have always shot my shotgun with my left eye open but have recently begun to miss birds coming straight on and high, or quartering away from me and crossing. Your video made a lot of sense but here's my dilemma. If I close my left eye, my right eye takes over just fine. As soon as I open my left eye the barrel "jumps" and my left eye wants control. I'm trying to learn how to shoot with both eyes open but my sight picture is all messed up. Should I switch sides?

    I have always found your advice to be well placed. I am right handed and right eye dominant. I recently suffered a stroke that affected the vision in my right eye. My daughter is a physical therapist and she has ordered me to make whatever adjustments I have to make to continue shooting. She feels it is much too important a part of my lifestyle to easily give up, so I have begun my search for advice. First stop, Roger Pace. Thanks, your information is encouraging. I would like to continue shooting right handed and not have to convert to left handed shooting. I’m heading to the range soon, any further specific advice?

    Wayne Jenkins...your comment has touched me deeply and my eyes are slightly teary as i type this...sorry about your stroke ...i am going to give this answer the best shot I am capable of...firstly your daughter is correct in saying you should not give up shooting...secondly do not change to left handed shooting...you said you were heading out to the range soon...when you do go to the range ...say to yourself ...my gun will shoot where i look...NOTHING HAS CHANGED...I CAN STILL SEE THE TARGET...call pull and shoot the target...yes ...it might be a bit harder at first...but it may not...the most important thing is to go out there and BELIEVE in your ability...it's all about confidence...see bird,,,shoot bird...please let me know how you go...God bless you both...stay well and from the bottom of my heart...HAPPY shooting !!!

    Hi Roger thanks for the great videos. As I am cross dominant and have been shooting for nearly a year now and have been using this technique. I have just one question. Just say your stance and mounting is good, how would you know how much lead you have given the clay if you have not taken your eyes off the clay because under theory you should be shooting were you looking which is at the clay, obviously understanding that you still swing through. As you say if you miss, miss in front. Your help would be appreciated. Regards Chris

    Chris...a very good question... I do not think about lead... basically it's "See Bird Shoot Bird" but...on a left or right swinger after i have shot... somehow my sight picture tells me i was in front of the target...it is hard to explain...but if i consciously think about lead i slow down and miss the target...sorry i can't be more helpful...thank you for watching.....much appreciated...stay well and happy shooting !!!

    This video was a revelation for me. I've struggled with cross dominance for quite some time. I've taped my left lens and then took it off, only to put it back on again. But you're right. It only makes a difference if you're looking at beads and barrels and pointing at something. If you are truly looking and focusing only on the target, eye dominance should not matter. No one I know goes out pheasant hunting with taped glasses, but will put it on when trap shooting. What's the difference? None, that I see.

    Roger thank you for some very helpful videos. I have been shooting trap since December. I was steadily improving. Now I find myself shooting 15 consistently. And I don’t seem to be able to improve. On the subject of eye dominance. I am cross eye dominant. I have tried a small piece of tape on my glasses with limited success. Could you to clarify your approach to eye dominance. Once you have checked your gun mount. Do. you keep both eyes open and focus on the target ? How does this affect the sight picture?

  • @rogerpace9322

    @rogerpace9322

    5 жыл бұрын

    Peter...keep both eyes open and focus only on the target...never look at the gun...if you started in december you are going well...remember ...always miss in front...too much in front and youve still got a chance of breaking the clay...shoot behind and you have no chance...go to the pattern board and make sure your gun is shooting where you look...consistent twenties wont be too far away!

    Been giving this a lot of thought lately. I am starting to believe it is just like driving a car. You dont really think about it, your brain and sub-concience do it all for you. This is how I am going to shoot from now on. I have always tried to aim the shotgun at the target, rather than letting my hand-eye co-ordination take over. Thanks for the vid, great info.

    I am Right Handed, left eye dominate and shoot with the gun on the LEFT side, left hand on trigger and right hand on fore stock, up there in age and always shot that way with a rifle and shotgun, very accurate, If I switch sides just for fun to see how it feels, hold on my right shoulder, not only Is it awkward I feel so stupid, but I shoot a pistol with my right hand, very accurate, but since I was a kid with my first BB gun and cap pistol, always shot that way. WORKS FOR ME, I always close my right eye so I will be on target

    Roger - Thank you for the great video. I have a couple of questions if you don’t mind. This video seems to apply heavily to clay target shooting or lighter bird hunting which is great. However, it’s not uncommon where I live in the mountains to actually use a shotgun to hunt something like Deer or Elk and obviously these shots are very different. You’re going to use real sights, the target is still or moving slowly, you are 40-75+ yards away etc. Would you recommend in these situations to simply close your non-dominant eye? If you were teaching a new shotgun user this style of hunting in addition to bird/target shooting would you simply start them by using their non-dominant hand so that their dominant eye was appropriately placed? Thanks again for the great non-nonsense information.

    Floyd...i hope i've understood the question...if you are using real sights ie front bead and rear sight then line up the barrels with right eye if right handed ...check the point of impact of the gun and you should be good to go...i hunt with my trap gun and just look at the rabbit and fire...stay well and happy shooting!!!

    Hi Roger, top class video! I have a bit of a predicament on which I feel I strongly need your opinion as an experienced shooter. I am right handed but left eye dominant. Since I was young, I have shot with rifles and air guns with the left handed stance. I have recently been told that it would be more beneficial to shoot right handed as it would keep the uniformity of everything being right handed and thus me being better behind the shotgun. I have recently been introduced to the sport of shotgunning and am definitely taking it up. I would like to set a firm foundation and learn "correctly" how to shoot. I would gladly appreciate any advice/guidance to what I should do in terms of switching my shooting stance(i.e from left handed rifle shooting to right handed shotgun shooting) and so on. Kind regards Gregory

  • @rogerpace9322

    @rogerpace9322

    Greg ...if you have been shooting rifles and air guns with a left handed stance you obviously feel comfortable shooting on that side...the preference is to always shoot on the side of the dominant eye...so if you are left eye dominant...have been shooting left handed...then I would advise to also shoot left handed with the shotgun...get a gun with cast off for a left hander...and make sure that the gun fits you...hope this is helpful...stay well...Roger

    Hi Great Videos, Does the clothes that you wear make a difference. Shooting clays in the winter you tend to wrap up more and I find too many clothes can make a difference to my gun mount. whats your thoughts, My son wears same summer and winter as is a better shot than I do you think that is the answer, Most times I have the gun up before I call for the bird. all these things get me confused Many thanks for your time Bill Miller Scotland

    I agree 100 percent that using two eyes is better than one. However this is something that I simply cannot do and have tried many times swapping to left handed and opening both eyes, both of which makes me shoot terrible. I am now in B grade and at the point where I constantly shoot 24 or 25 out of 25. I would also like to say that nora ross is also a one eye shooter and somone who I regard as an absolute champion. I think if what ever you are doing is working and you can consistently shoot well than there is no reason to change. At the end of the day we are all here for fun and to bust some clays. Happy shooting and thanks for the videos I have watched them all, keep them coming
