Great information. Too bad I am not in the UK. I am severely cross dominate. Your explanation on seeing and perception was spot on in my case. I am severely left eye dominate and right handed. When sighting down the barrel it actually looks bent. The right eye sees the bead and the last 2/3rds of the barrel and the left eye sees the first 1/3rd of the barrel with the left eye taking in all the information and the right eye focusing only on the bead and only along for the ride.

Ha! The irony that I wear pretty much the same gold rimmed turtleshell arm aviators as Ed and Johnny when its sunny. Had my eyes lasered a few years ago and I will never look back *pun intended*. I want a set of Pilla's but the price tag for something that might not work in terms of lens colours is what has put me off so far. I don't want to waste £600 on lenses that might not be right for me, so when the time comes I will be speaking to Ed Lyons, had him on my radar for many years and soon I'll bite the bullet and get myself a pro set!

Nice to have an interview with an optometrist who has really built his business around specialising in shooting-related optometry. There is nothing more infuriating than hearing self-proclaimed eye dominance experts giving their sermons from on high (or over KZread) and then trying to sell their apparently life-changing invention that will solve all your problems, regardless of who you are.

I’m didn’t learn until very recently that the reason why I can’t see down the sights on a gun at all when I hold it left handed. I am right handed in terms of shooting and right eye dominant so when I mount a long gun left handed it always appeared that the sights were way off from where my cheek well and eye were. Then I realized my eye dominance won’t allow me to see down the sights with my left eye unless I close my right eye because it is dominant. I felt so stupid. I always through that right handed guns must just be really right handed but when I tried this with an AR in a gun shop I knew something was funky.

I’ve shot a few times now I’m looking to get into the sport, when I’ve been with a friend I’ve shot both eyes open and when on experience days I’ve shot left eye closed which I don’t want to do as I get into the sport I want to minimise any bad habits. I have a slightly lazy right eyes but do not wear anything to correct this as it’s very slight. Will lessons help fix any issues or a corrective lens

What would you suggest for a lens color that could possibly assist my shooting. I know it'll never be perfect, but possibly better for myself. Thank you.

As a beginner in shooting I struggle to understand the picture I see. If I focus on the clay I see two barrels, and if I focus on the barrel I see two clays. I try to fix it by closing my left eye, but that leaves me handicaped in seeing the field. Is this normal, and I just have to learn to understand the picture?

The physiological diplopia, is something I experience when trying to shoot two eyes open. So i have to close my left eye as I am a RH shooter. Any advise on how to resolve this, or is it a matter of just getting used to it!?

No need to close the eye, just understand the picture! Right hander will need to reference the left barrel and vice versa. I always see two barrels when I shoot. Ed S

Great question! So Physiological Diplopia is totally normal, though it can be visually confusing. Phys Dip on its own doesn’t indicate an Eye Dom problem, this is a myth that continues to be perpetuated! There are shooters who aren’t cross dominant but find the PD irritating so close an eye to resolve it, then there are those who see the Phys Dip phenomenon AND are cross dominant too. What we’d need to establish is your true eye dominance state by taking motor and sensory measurements, that way we can make a proper visual plan 🤓

Thank you both for your replies. I have tried basic eye dominance tests at home which if i am doing it correctly suggest I am LE 'dominant' so to speak. So not sure how that impacts my over all picture when shooting 2 eyes open. I don't struggle with picking the clays up against different back grounds but I do favour a purple/violet lense which I feel highlight the greens and oranges better than dark or clear lenses. But will switch to a dark grey/black lense on sunny days.

@@K80Ed the bad with me its the left "picture" of the gun, where it is indeed,it is the transparent and the right picture, the false point of barrel is the strong one and that confuse my brain in shooting. i have try and more than 20 years to shoot with open both eyes, just fast as i have the gun in my shoulder but that trick has give me other troubles. so i have stop to shoot clays and try to close left eye in hunting.
