    This is why Thierry’s runways are so loved by everyone. Models are of different age, heights and bodies. And notice how they smile!!!!! They have fun! They are not just selling you the garment, they are giving you an experience. They. Give. You. Life!!!

    But they aren't of different races! He used one Black model and one Asian. Everyone else was white. Thierry had the clout to do better. This lack of diversity is an ongoing problem at the big runway shows.

    94110mission uh no. Thierry is white. His clothing is an expression of himself. He’s not going going to have other races portray something he isn’t unless it’s for an artistic purpose. Clearly all you want to is push the race issue when people are happy with seeing white women in Thierry Mugglers art. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that and clearly you’re making up problems. Fashion design in the high culture context is a European thing.

    @@BlackNoiseCat By your logic these should all be men's clothes since Thierry is a man. I mean it was the 90's and diversity wasn't even remotely close to being a concern in society so it's not his fault and as an artist he can choose whatever models he wants, but saying " Fashion design in the high culture context is a European thing" as an excuse not to use models of different races feels a bit....well there's a reason most people's minds jump to Europe when they hear the words "white supremacy"

  • @BlackNoiseCat

    @BlackNoiseCat

    christmastiger I mean why do you think he played with masculine silhouettes as well as feminine. Cause he’s a man and he’s an artist. High fashion IS European. If people want to call that “white supremacy” then they’re insecure about their own culture/race.

Any of the 90s house djs would have worked with him. Fun trivia - Thierry is wearing a shirt from the motorcycle shop Mickey Rourke owned on South Beach.

    It kind of feels like we've gone backwards at times when it comes to models. Mugler's models are performers and are visually telling a story with the looks, as drag queens say. Nowadays you get a lot of models who just stand there and think their faces and bodies are going to be all they need. If that were the case, we'd use mannequins.

By 2020, scores of legendary department stores and swanky boutiques had fallen into a tidal wave of bankruptcies. The remainder would struggle for survival with the rest of the brick-and-mortar crowd against the ever-growing dominance of Online Retailing and Discounters before the sudden catastrophic arrival of a historic global pandemic. I was lucky enough to have seen this show in Paris. I was once a nanny who lived with one of Mugler’s celebrity models, Julie Newmar, and took care of her son John when he was a tot and I was a student. John has severe, multiple challenges yet is also a sweet, loving young artist. As a treat, many years after I had moved on from nanny to Special Education teacher, Julie took me to Paris and this show. I not only sat in the front row for the show, but was also treated to a free shopping trip to the Mugler store in Paris. I was gifted a haute couture dress from that very show. Also spent time at fittings, rehearsals, after party, and met Manfred and many of the models and celebrities. I have endless stories and memories! It was one of the most astounding experiences of my life! Mugler remained a lovely friend to Julie until the very end. He always sent beautiful birthday flowers. When her son John was in the hospital, Manfred sent not only beautiful flowers but a heart-felt note. He was a creative genius and a dear, dear human being!

    this is one of the coolest comments I have ever read on KZread. how thrilling for you!!! incredible! you are so gracious. what an experience. and brava for your work in special education and with children in general. my mother got her masters degree in special education, which she taught for years, until she was made principal of a school that was entirely for special needs children. then the last 20 years of her career she became the principal for what had been the grade school I had gone to as a child. so my growing up experience was all through the lens of special education, and being an educator. and you all are simply the best people in the world. you do such important work. and the average person has no idea what your work demands. you are not paid what you should be paid. and our culture doesn't value educators the way that they should. so I am saying that I understand and appreciate what you do in your work, and it is MAJOR! luckily, when one does good work in life, sometimes the fates gives such folks a special reward here and there. because you deserve rewards for all of that hard, mostly underappreciated work. this whole experience you describe sounds like a marvelous reward that came to you actually because of the work you do. amazing! and you got to work with and know Julie Newmar?? too cool, as well! congrats on all this! and I love hearing that Mugler was also a good, caring guy. I am not surprised but how nice to hear it in earnest. thanks for posting! a marvelous story!

I think this show in particular was mostly inspired by 50s, 60s, but I also think some looks are especially fruity looking so I wouldn't be suprised if what you said is true. The reason why the gays were never this stylish is because they could not afford haute couture level tailoring, fabrics etc lmao. These pieces were truly ahead of their time; and it's hard to believe that this was 24 years ago...The only person who's runways still had this level of style, flair, and personality, was the late Alexander McQueen. Fashion shows used to Define the clothes people actually wear. Watch ultimate fashion history’s 50’s 60’s 80’s and 90’s videos. It started with Christian Dior creating the New Look after the war, by 1990 women were out of skin to show. Every hemline had been done. And at that point fashion started to separate from street style and become more of a high art. Disconnected from how people will actually dress. In 1950’s every woman wore a girdle- Daily! The dramatic runway look was adopted by the culture, which was much more homogenous and concerned with ideas of propriety and conformity.

    You know what the BEST part about this immaculate show was? Besides the garments themselves, it's the diversity. There were women in their 20's, 30's, 40's, and I believe there were a three or four famous models in their 50's or 60's as well. There was also racial as well as body diversity. It wasn't about being a shapeless twig weighing 105 pounds, it was the celebration of FEMININITY, femme fatale, and GLAMOUR in all its forms, first and foremost.

    Only that the 90's was the most unglamourous decade ever. Male hatred, Prozac, Tony Blair and Oasis, give me a fucking break! Mugler fashion shows and super models were great of course, like isolated pockets of lush in a sea of dreary, but his entire aestethic actually harps back to a previous era, namely the 80's, without which any of the above would have been impossible. The 90's... they were nothing. The 80's and late 70's, on the other hand, now we're talking. :)

    Slick Monique As a person who spent her late teens and 20's in the 90's, I beg to differ. Male hatred and Prozac? WTF? Obviously, you have only read about the 90's. Oasis? Really? More like Nirvana, Metallica, Tupac. The nineties had a lot of minimalistic and toned down fashion here and there, however it wasn't "unglamorous". You are so far off I can tell you didn't live through this time. You're either older, spending your time in the cringey 80's with their Debbie Gibson and neon, or born after the 90's and are getting your opinion and info from the internet. Oasis......lmao.

    @@anonymousunnamed3026 The only thing dull about the 90's was the minimalist fashion of that era. The 80's had much better, and bolder fashion in my humble opinion. Other than that though, the 90's ruled!

    This is not just a fashion show, this is performance art at its best. In 1995 I was 34 years old. I remember very well how runway shows, models, and how fashion used to be. Everything today, movies, tv, music, and fashion is oriented towards youth, & young folks. This is not always a good thing. Thierry Mugler represented a certain style and class for adult ladies that are completely absent from today's fashion culture. The models in Thierry's show were performance artists. They wore the couture the couture didn't wear them. The models in this show were and are legends and legendary: Jerry Hall, Claudia Shiffer, Linda Evangelista, my girl Naomi Campbell!!! the queen of the catwalk and many others including a model whose name I don't know but I do know she was in her 70:s when she did that show. The music in the show reminded me of my youth in NYC. Speaking of Naomi Campbell, it blew me away near the end of the show when she came down the stairs and out pops the late great legendary JAMES BROWN, the godfather of soul music. I almost lost my mind. Special props to Melanie Griffith's mother the late great actress Tippi Hedren, star of the classic movie Alfred Hitchcock's "The Birds" who modeled like a professional. She was stunning,elegant, and refined. I agree with some other comments regarding the fact that these ladies smiled, they were all sizes and racially diverse. I crave the old days when there was such a thing as class and glamour. Nowadays being that everything is oriented towards youth and young folks, class and glamour no longer exist. I loved this throwback to the 90"s it makes me realize how fortunate I was to have once experienced a time when there were class, glamour, models who weren't anorexic and who smiled and enjoyed themselves on the catwalk. Thierry Mugler was a fashion genius of a bygone era.
