I'm so wildly excited about this upgrade! The Icarus roof conversion by Alu-Cab is a serious game-changer for how I live and travel, and definitely THE top product in the world of overlanding. A MASSIVE thank you to Alu-Cab for partnering up with me!
In addition to the rooftop conversions (available to Defenders and some Toyotas), they also make awesome cabins and campers for many other car models. Check them out: www.alu-cab.com/

I have advice on the mud from the pupper, Vilk. Somewhere between 1.5 and 2.5 years of age, he will begin to calm down. The training done in the first two years? CRUCIAL as it determines what kind of experience the owner and dog will have over the years!!! Until then, your sanity is occasionally tested. To prevent a dog from jumping up on you, put your knee into the chest. There’s no-jump harnesses, but I don’t think it’ll be needed. Give a command once. Wait. Correct if necessary. If you want the command for “come” to be “Come here! C’mon Vilk… c’mon buddy… let’s go.”? You don’t. SO much about training a dog is about the MASTER learning and being disciplined. Consistency is huge. Try to leave emotion out of it! NOTE: you’ll fail again and again with emotions and giving a command once. The better you do, the better result. Never plead for obedience. You’re not asking. Ideally, you’re not even demanding. Informing or directing are good ways to think about it. A flat, even tone is best. It’s not like being a drill sergeant, so much as saying “pass the salt” and you’ve got a brilliant breed that’s eager to learn and work. He wants to be given orders!!! On KZread, there’s tons of videos on dog training, German Shepherds, puppy behavioral issues, etc. and you might want to download some things before heading out of wireless range. Try to have a Kong or tennis ball or a small rubber tire, in the vehicle. The urge to chew is irresistible to a teething dog. If there’s not something that you don’t mind him chewing, he’ll make due with something. I used retractable leashes with my Rottweilers. You might not be interested, but please inquire about hiking when it’s just the two of you. Ask yourself how he’d react to a bear. He’s not been alive long and so many things are new to him. I’m guessing that the fascination of a bear might leave him mesmerized and not hearing or obeying a command. Well, at some point I began directing this stuff to Eva. lol Ohhhh… idk if you have a security system for the vehicle, but since it’s all your stuff (and at times this includes the two of you)? The day will come when Vilk can jump up into the upper level on his own and that’ll be sweet. 🤌🏻 I’d say that I could go on and on, but it’s already apparent. Please stay safe. There’s wonderful people and animals in this world. However, being grateful for life should lend one to recognizing that some of each may lack compassion… entirely. You’re an inspiration. God bless.

@@junior.von.claire Good advice. I'm not a great dog trainer, but I remind myself to act like a strong alpha. This does 'not' mean being cruel to my dog - not at all! - just firm and confident. I'm lucky because he's a smart dog and seems to understand what I want. He's a Chihuahua - they're not supposed to be smart, but I'd argue that.

Yes, this is a far safer setup that leaves you far less vulnerable to predatory humans or animals & far less unnecessary, unpleasant exposure to the elements not to mention the extra comfort and space for both you and Vilk. Great idea and Vilk seems like a very happy, contented dog, why wouldn't he be given he's so cherished.

👍Hilary, your comment is appreciated. There are other women YT creators whose rant to other Women is “ Who me afraid?” If you’re an attractive female (sorry but odds don’t favor) in urban or wild sh*t’s gonna happen. At least you acknowledge this. Lived urban, short stints in youth. Lived free range wild most yrs. To ignore there is has been a long raging war against women is just ignorant. Remote hiker. With my dogs. Decades. Fear is my friend. Precaution. Preparation. Endless. Reason I’m alive. Many stories. Still I go. Knowing that sh*t goes down, I don’t survive, headlines will read “Why Was She Out There Alone?! My bad. In my next life I’d love to have the freedom to wander w/o utmost concern for 2 leggers. No worries. Pitch a tent wherever. Guess that means male. Wth.

That setup looks absolutely amazing, I can imagine it makes a huge difference, especially keeping in mind how miserable you looked in the storm episode! And it is so cool to see how you are starting to see the moments where Vilk is showing signs of calmness and compusure. Yes, mud and dirt everywhere. And I have a “domestic” setting. You are going to have even more! 😁

Hello Eva, I just found your channel and I am loving it. Being on the wrong side of 50, solo female traveling was not done when I was your age. No internet, cell phones, and absolutely no way to make a living traveling unless you were a truck driver (something I considered). I backpacked, camped, and rented cabins in the woods for years until I bought my home in the Catskills, NY. where I live today. I was so happy when you got Vilk, great name BTY. I am on my 4th GSD. Each has taken me through a segment of my life, and I can’t imagine not living with one. Well trained, they can travel anywhere. Just make sure your recall command is spot on. A dog must come back when called, it can save his life, especially in the forest. I was wondering how you were going to manage to get Vilk in the roof tent when he got big… So, bravo on the Odyssey upgrade! Keep the content coming because I live vicariously through you. Heading into my 60s and not willing to give up a toilet and shower, I’m considering an Airstream and starting my own adventure.

I tried to get my husband to do a drive around the USA back in the 1980s when in my 30s, but he had no interest. Now I'm also on flip side of 50 & with some health issues. I can live vicariously through others adventures. I still recommend she gets a small sat phone that functions where cell phones & internet do not. I'm all for adventure, but travelling alone as young woman makes me cringe sometimes. -- She wants to know about rules for life, which I'd say to be more careful. Things don't always work out & not everyone is nice. This is a good upgrade!

For some reason 'problem' dogs keep turning up at my place as the last step before they end up at the dog pound, I currently have my 7th dog so far. Every dog has turned out to be excellent after I taught them 2 things, the meaning of NO!! and Come Here!!. Unfortunately the young women who these dogs previously lived with thought it would be unfair to give the dogs limitations and boundaries, but I can tell you now it was so much more unfair on the dogs to be abandoned because they thought they were uncontrollable. The dogs were definitely sad for the first 12 months but turned into the most beautiful animals ever. Please, please, please, People, be the Leader of the Pack even if it is only the 2 of you, dogs are pack animals and need a leader. The dog doesn't realise it has done anything wrong but suddenly it is unwanted and doesn't get to see the first love of their lives ever again.

2.0 looks & functions amazing! Does the added weight of the pop up roof give concern to increased rollover scenarios? Not that you rock crawl, but you are off road often to an extent. It may be worth it to have a shop fabricate some sort of roll over bar, whether within the cab or an exoskeleton type of application.

Looks like it’s comparable to the weight she already had up there. Maybe even less. Cuz she won’t have that extra cargo space she did above here center of gravity. Even if it was “added weight,” don’t forget she lost a lot of it when removing shelf and cargo from up top. I think finding how to economize her lower level to accommodate her cargo etc would be the next step in this build. Adding weight with an exoskeleton would not be efficient in this scenario since as you mentioned she’s not doing extreme climbing. If she economizes cargo and weight distribution she should be fine.

I found the specs...it's 155 lbs (70kg) heavier than the factory roof so pretty negligible after all. Good points on redistributing the weight from the removal of the shelving.

My dad sort of gave me playbook because he messed up maybe once a decade: oversleeping: always set two different alarms, one electric and one mechanical in case power or batteries fail. Getting locked out: always carry two sets of house and car keys on your person. Then I keep a third set in my home (for the car) and in the car (for my home). Computers: keep at least 4 backups of everything, never ever count on your phone or one computer and keep backups both on online servers and portable harddrives. Those phone backup services are a ripoff with a capital R and if you miss one payment all your data is gone or held hostage. I put my data on one backup service, they went out of business, and we were all left high and dry. Take ownership of everything and trust other people and companies to the least extent possible.

Very cool, love the upgrade Eva. How does this impact your storage space tho? You might want to let the pup sleep in the lower level tho, when he gets bigger you might not be able to lift him into the upper level. Can't wait to see what else you have planned. It will be interesting to see how well it will hold heat or how hard it will be to keep it heated on a cold night. Nice thing tho is the whole car will be warm.

Wow, that’s a much needed upgrade. So much better that you don’t have to climb out of the vehicle in the rain and carry your boy up with the packs. He’s such a great doggo. And like the guy at the garage said, being able to make a quick escape, if necessary, is very important. Congrats on the new amazing roof. But bears can climb up on there in Alaska, I would be VERY cautious in places like that.

@Solar Warden that's the dog's job. First, it provides early warning for you to take action; second, bears usually steer clear of dogs like the plague; third, this is all weirdly hypothetical since grizzlies and black bears usually avoid contact with humans unless you are doing something incredibly stupid like leaving food out at night. I've lived and camped in bear country most of my adult life, and I've never had a run-in with a bear (although a baby bear did wander into the prep room of the kitchen I was working at, but that's a different story), and I've been far more exposed than she will be.
