These cats are on rat patrol

A cat shelter in Chicago is selling feral cats for up to $600 to combat Chicago's rat problem, which is believed to be the worst in the country.

    lived in a cheap apt during college. very infested with rats. after trying all kinds of traps, i managed to coax a stray cat in with a bowl of milk. the cat wasn't very friendly, but he (she?) turned out to be one helluva a mouse-catching machine. one moment he'd be sleeping on top of my VCR (remember those?), then in an instant spring into action, curl its back, hiss and in a blur seemed to pull a mouse out of thin air. he'd then torture the bejeezus out of the mouse, showing off his various foosball moves, and it's like they somehow both agree it's game over time and proceeded to eat the mouse, making loud crunch sounds until he finally slurps the tail. 20 years later, i still miss that cat. he was a lousy companion, but magnificent at his job.

    I should add that the cat eliminated at least 1/2 dozen rats, cuz he did it in front of me. in fact, one day I came home and he had pinned down two rats with his paws, waiting for me to compliment him. When I ignored him, it was like 'pfft' then crunch, crunch crunch. A few nights, while I was sleeping, I'd hear sudden 'Raaar' then some ruckus, followed by more crunch, crunch. I thought he just serviced my apt, but a neighbor once noted he hadn't noticed any rats for a while. I had to move out when the city shut the place down for infestation. But again, a magnificent rat killing machine. BTW, it was a feral cat.

    Yes! The ancient role of cats. I would dare to say that we, as a society, have a bit of a distorted view of cats nowadays, given our modern way of living and our current relationship with them, but once you have tried stockpiling food, you will notice the immediate, absolute, completely unavoidable need for real, predatory cats for rodent control. There's simply no way around it. This was specially true in situations like seaships.

    @The Darkman Maybe for some definitely. Especially the working ones & as long as they're not too skinny. But my spoiled little indoor her whole life cat has caught & killed mice. She proudly brought me the first to show off. The second she turned her back & growled like a possessed cat. Man she was pissed I took it. But yeah gross. Besides I gave her & her brother an entire can of food for it. Poor cute field mice. But you come into my house you die. Cats are one of the few animals that seems to hunt for pleasure as much as food. I recently saw the neighbors cat go after little birds. I know he's well fed too because he sometimes follows me home for my little turds stale food. Still they probably hunt & actually kill if a little hungry. As opposed to my eat what they want as long as they don't get really fat cats. Harlequin is sitting in the kitchen right now staring at me because she wants canned food. Micah just curled up in my lap because he's cuddly. Harley's staring at me is starting to freak me out. I'd better go feed her.

    I can understand the logic behind this, but ONLY if they are spayed or neutered. Cats, even cute domestic ones, are some of the most efficient predators on the planet. If the population of these "rat patrol" cats weren't managed (which it looks like they are in this case), you'd see the end of more than just your rat problem. You'd also see the end of your bird problem, your squirrel problem, your frog and toad problem, basically any small animal that they can catch is a good meal for a hungry feral cat.

  • @MaureenLycaon

    @MaureenLycaon

    5 жыл бұрын

    I'm noticing that these cats have the tip clipped off one ear. That's a common way to identify a feral cat who has been spayed or neutered and vaccinated. So they are indeed being managed to make sure a rat problem doesn't get replaced with a feral cat problem.

    Even cats who aren't hungry will take down prey if it's available. My two are indoor only & always have been. But Harlequin has taken down a couple of mice. The first she proudly brought me. @@anonamust8697 - Have you any idea how fast cats breed. Also do you know how much breeding reduces the life of a female cat. Male cats also lead a much shorter life as they need to constantly fight to get a mate and maintain their territory. Cats can also be seen as an invasive species, especially if there is not a range of effective hunters above them in the food chain, in which they are in the middle. As well as rodents, cats predate a number of other species vital to bio-diversity. In shelters all over the world tens of thousands of healthy cats are euthanised each week. If you need more cats save a few in the shelters. Believe me, the world does not need more cats.

Otherwise, if it is someone just offloading a bunch of kittens you still have the costs of neutering, vaccinations and health check, as well as the possible costs of collecting them. You want your basic Domestic Cat, not some inbred thing. The standard feline has full motion ears, perfect balance and proportion and is an ideal athlete. Persians, Siamese, Scottish Fold, Munchkins etc all are inbred to reinforce recessive traits. The traits bred for are usually deleterious (Persians’ flat faces cause respiratory problems and build ups of gunk in eyes, nose and ears) and breeding for recessive traits will reinforce other recessives (so Persians also often develop severe arthritis early on).

    It's called 'ear tipping'. It's done when feral cats are part of the TNR program (Trap, Neuter, Release). The ear tip is shaved off with a surgical cauterizer, which provides easy visual identification. An untipped cat needs to be trapped for TNR; a tipped cat has already been caught, vaccinated, given a de-wormer and flea treatment, and fixed. It's a lot cheaper than trapping and euthanizing strays, and new ferals just move into the old colony's territory, anyways. This reduces the feral cat population while offering the cats a little medical support, and local pest control.

    Hi Steve - Read this post, and just a couple of points. You seem to be assuming a feral cat is unhappy and is just a cat without a home. While I agree that when a cat is under ownership they will live longer due to better healthcare, it may not be happier if it is an ex-feral cat and is now an indoors cat. Outside cats, imo have a rich and stimulating experience, that is not always replicated indoors. Cats, unlike dogs, are still wild animals and can survive. If a cat has gone through a TNR program, especially if it is a female cat, it will live a lot longer than otherwise. I am not saying the cat you may have socialised is not happy now. Although saying that, just because a cat is accepting food from you does not mean it is socialised. Far from it. Unless a cat looks as if it is struggling or ill, it should in general be left alone, but that does not mean refrain from putting some food out. Be careful with this, as you could end up with a lot of cats coming round. They are certainly not averse to a free meal. It must never be handed into a rescue centre, especially kittens, as the chance of them being euthanised are very high.

    Of course long, long before they will take on a rat, they will get the easiest food first, like birds, then mice, then anything that doesn't fight back. Rats are 10x the size of a mouse. If you ever saw a rat fight, you'd know why very few cats will mess with rats. They ignore each other. They did an experiment in New York City where there is a waiting line for feral cats. They set up cameras at a dump and there were only two rat kills by feral cats. Australia has plenty of mice and rats. It's the native species the cats are decimating.

    They get food, shelter and medical care in exchange for their services. You don’t get the kitties if you don’t take care of them - and even though they’re all feral, in some cases they’ve become quite friendly with their caretakers and will accept pets and even cuddles, although it shouldn’t be expected
