    I too ignored precious metal models my entire life. I bought my first DJ in 1998 in all steel. Great watch. Love it. And I had a long hiatus until this year purchasing my 124270. I am now kicking myself for not getting into precious metals. What made me think about it was your palm frond two tone video. Also, I used to go to HK twice a year for business and always wore my steel DJ. And you’re right, it seems like it has the highest concentration of Rolexes out of anywhere in the world. Thanks for the video.

    1) Maybe in your local area (HK?) watch crime is not a major problem - but in many other places, the more attention your watch attracts, the more you put your personal safety at risk. Gold and two-tone watches are highly visible, relatively - and as such, a definite security concern. 2) Absolutely do NOT place your watches crown down. Putting pressure on crown and stem can cause internal damage to the watch which is much more significant than any cosmetic scratches you risk by putting the watch with the other side facing downwards.

  • @KCTimeShare

    @KCTimeShare

    6 ай бұрын

    Thanks for sharing your thoughts! I can see your point of view in 1). And as to 2), I am not sure if it will create that much pressure to the stem especially when the crown is fully screwed in. I guess time will tell when I next take my pieces in for a service 😆

    I'm not sure if I agree with your recommendation on winding a watch. I've heard a lot of differing opinions on this and not just from amateurs but from watch makers themselves. My opinion is that you wind your watch just until the second hand starts moving and then stop. From my experience this will vary depending on the movement but can take as little as 3 or 4 turns of the crown. Then I let the movement of my arm and the rotor do the rest. I would never wind my watch 30 to 40 times. Obviously a Rolex is probably engineered to withstand this but it just seems like unnecessary wear and tear on the movement.

  • @sinjinadams2862

    @sinjinadams2862

    6 ай бұрын

    HaHa! Maybe not. The reality is, Rolex movements are extremely well made and should be able to handle the wear and tear. Other movements like ETA, not so much. Regardless, I only wind my watches just enough to get them running or I gently shake them but that's just me. 😊😊

    Do not let your AD blackmail you into buying something else, just wait, as the hype is declining and you still want the watch for the watches sake you will be informed in the near future. I don’t let somebody who is after my money tread me like a beggar! If they don’t want to do business with you buy another brand! I think the mass of complaints drove Rolex to buy Bucherer and do direct to customer business in the future.

    Rolex S/S sports models aren’t even great value compared to several more inexpensive models from other brands: Omega SMP 300M, JLC Polaris, BP FF Bathyscape, Omega AT small seconds, several Grand Seiko models. Not trying to be a wise ass but have you ever owned one? Break it down to a yearly cost. Then compare it to the guy that buys a $1-2k watch once or twice a year. Those essentially have no value retention, it costs more in the long run, and they’ll never be passed down. If they are they’ll be worthless and no recipient will ever see the value in it like the purchaser. Rolex is the opposite.

    I disagree about manual winding. When the automatic router moves, this powers the watch in a way that is much safer than compared to manual winding. Manual-wind gears are not as robust as the automatic gear train. Only in dedicated manual-wind watches is it safe to manual wind on a daily basis, as there is no automatic gear train, and the manual wind cogs are beefed up. The same can't be said for automatic watches. For the first ten minutes of my autos I slap them on and wear them to charge them up that way, and only set them after that.

  • @KCTimeShare
