There are perfectly good functioning watches for less then $30us, just buy that if it’s just for function. Or get a smart watch still cheaper than a Rolex with more functions. The Watches here are an investment and appreciation of craftsmanship! With a knock-off, you are paying literally for the name and not the actual craftsmanship and function that made the name!

As a machinist and toolmaker, I can testify that even the small defects you find on some of these watches are still amazingly close to perfect, machining especially by hand such small parts is extremely difficult and the defects are what gives the watches personality and are hand made to very close to perfection. I assume most of the very small parts are made by wire edm using a .006 wire.

I have done jobs on satellite transmitter parts with .002" wire (human hair is .003"). Basically, to go in and chase openings in parts that were originally cut with .006" wire to reduce the corner radii. You have no idea what a complete PITA it is to work with.

@@andreashabeck1155 I can't afford one so I'll admit I don't know if this describes the *whole* product line, but the humbly named Spring Drive uses a quartz-calibrated "magnetic brake" on a caliber that runs faster than normal by design. The extra energy of the balance wheel is turned into electricity and burned in just the right amount to keep the watch accurate. I can get why a "purist" might consider this cheating in a sense. I have heard it compared to a "cheap quartz watch," and maybe that's why they don't use the Q-word too loudly. But IMO it is *the* most advanced and artistic timepiece. Rolex IMO showcases aesthetic traits like laser engraving and superlative finishing/polishing, but inside it's still largely the same watch they made in the 50s. Seiko were not content to stop there. Again, I have more human concerns vying for my money so this is just my perspective as an engineer and builder of (much larger) machines. If I was flush with money and wanted to make a statement, I feel like the GS better exemplifies the spirit of innovation and technical restlessness that moves us forward, and the Rolex is like any other watch. But the Milgauss is also a beautiful piece of engineering for all the same reasons, don't get me wrong.

As watchmaker I have split feelings with microskping like that. Because some customer are disappointed when they see some little faults and brands could come into struggle selling or producing their pieces. But would customer pay 10x more of the actual price if companys would check their watches like that?! Remember the watchmaker check their finishing work with 3x to 10x loupe while playing with light on the workbench not with 200x on the screen! On the other hand I feel like there are too many luxury watches on the market. That magnification thing could help to decrease the quantity and increase the quality. But still a intresting video. I wonder how a watch from the "godfather of finish" would look like under this microscope ;)
