The Year Cartoon Network Got Really Obsessed With Thumbs
Фильм және анимация
Cartoon Network is in a strange spot. They're always in 3rd place behind the two big children's network, but for that same reason they're willing to take more risks. Sometimes their risks pay off and the strike gold and other times... they put all their eggs in a thumb based basket. They didn't think anyone would remember, or that it would have any effect on the children of the late 2000's. And yet... here I am.

Okay I'm going to be real, I though the thumb wars thing was something I hallucinated after watching Spy Kids too many times. The fact that it was on Cartoon Network and not on KZread shocked me, so I must have also watched it online at some point after seeing it air on TV. Wow, thanks for the vid.

No joke: as a kid, I was obsessed with the thumb wrestling show and even had the Evil Ira character as a Halloween costume once. Guess how much other kids at school recognized it (I'll give you a hint: it's a number that's less than one). Anyways, good to know that the show an embarrassing childhood memory was associated with wasn't even that good in retrospect.

the green frankenstein most people are familiar with is actually a copyrighted version of his appearance. the story itself is public domain, but the image of green frankenstein with bolts in his neck isnt, so people cant have theirs look like that without paying royalties or breaking copyright law

its kind of like the Winnie the Pooh incident, where the old illustrated novel Pooh is royalty free and can be used in anything, HOWEVER if you put a red shirt on it then its Disney's Pooh and you'll need to pay royalties to use it.

That's probably the reason why Frankie in G3 Monster High is more blueish and doesn't have neckbolts (although Universal used to distribute movies based on Mattel (the company that makes MH dolls) properties).
TWF is considered a cult classic in latino america. I'm an adult and I've met several adults that still laugh about TWF. It only happened during commercial breaks for us from what I remember. TWF is probably what got me into JoJo.

So do they like quote it or is it somewhere Where do I find it, I mean. I wanna watch it in good español latinoamericano
my family legitimately enjoyed thumbwars when i was a kid. Legitimately quotes from it entered into our common vernacular.
As one of three kids who watched Nicktoons Network, I cannot tell you how surreal it was seeing TWF not only transfer from Nick to CN, but even become part of Cartoon Network's identity for a brief period of time. I thought I was going insane.
I remember waking up early as a little kid when nobody was awake and I watched frankenthumb in the dark on my living room tv. You just brought that memory up from the murky depths of my mind
Its criminal that you don't have more subscribers with the amount of quality in this videos

Yo! As a kid the I thought the Thumb Wrestling Federation was such a rad show! It's wild that you are the first person I have ever seen acknowledge the existance of this show! 😁
If Bat Thumb had been made this year they could have written a parody song called "thumb-thing in the way"
I was one of the kids who was exposed to 6Teen for the first time with the halloween special. I was 7. For years I thought “Thats what 6teen is. That horror movie I watched as a kid.”
I dunno why, but I loved these thumb things CN did. They were such good... "Dumb Entertainment" I guess. They felt like they were just made to get you to smile, but not understand wtf you're smiling at, if that makes sense. Like some kind of Eldritch Comedy, lol.
when they say "possibly airing in 2022" I just picture the guy who wrote the script in 2010 going and updating it every year like a vision board
I just came to the horrifying realisation that TWF was part of my childhood that I never remembered until halfway through this video
Oh my god, somebody else who remembers TWF! I assumed it was some weird fever dream or some show nobody else watched, since nobody I’ve talked to here in the UK remembers it, but now I’m validated by a guy on the internet over a weird thumb show!
I remember loving TWF as a kid! My brothers and my dad would all watch it together, it was an event we looked forward to each week. My brother still remembers that, but he doesn’t remember the Star Wars parody one. I do though, it scarred me as well. There was a scene where Luke’s family gets murdered and in this universe it means they got “clipped.” The scene of that still bothers me to this day, the nail was cut down the center. It makes me feel uncomfortable just typing this. I was legitimately worried that scene would be in this video and had to keep glancing away just in case. Really enjoyed this video and the Total Drama one, I thought this was a much larger channel than it is due to the quality on those being so good. Anyways it’s larger by one sub now keep up the good work!
I’m so glad I found your creator clash story on tiktok because I’m loving your content and would never have found such gems if it weren’t for that. You my good sir have earned a long time fan and I can’t wait to watch you grow.
I love how I can just randomly see an 50 min long video deep dive on how Cartoon Network liked thumbs for a whole year. The internet is truly something special
I remember watching this on YTV in Canada. When I moved I forgot about this show entirely until I saw Mucha Lucha on Cartoon Network, but then I forgot its name. I only remembered it like a year ago and luckily found a lot of clips. Thanks for making this video and spreading awareness of this show!
I'm really glad I didn't just imagine thumb wars as a kid. Like I remember seeing it on the TV literally once for like 5 seconds, but it was so bizarre that it's burned in there. No joke, I told my parents about it, and they thought I was telling a weird joke, because they thought "oh, star wars with thumbs would be thumb wars, that's cute" but I kept insisting it wasn't a joke, but they had zero clue what I was talking about.
I remember the Thumb era. I was addicted to TWF when I was a kid. I bought the book they made and I made a mini wrestling stage as they had on the show. I remember playing the game they had on the CN website at the time. It was awesome. I always thought Frankenthumb was a dream I had, but I'm glad to know I wasn't crazy.
It’s good to know that we all had essentially the same childhood. I remember all of this when I was kid. Years later I remembered this and looked up all the Thumb movies on KZread and loved them because I was 13 and that was the height of comedy at the time.
I swear I remember one night when I was a kid, I was about to sleep and saw Bat Thumb was about to air so I stayed up a bit cause I was curious and I saw the two thumbs in bed and I just went to sleep and felt uncomfortable and never saw it again so I wasnt sure if I just went insane one night or not
I remember looking up the noods online and I didn’t even know what they were supposed to be. I asked my older cousin “what are noods?” To which he gave me a ver concerned and confused look.
@Demomandan

I also remember watching the zombie episode of 6teen and being very confused when subsequent episodes lacked any surreal elements except when they watched the Ron the rent a cop music video
I remember loving twf a lot as a kid, literally the best live action thing cn has produced and i guess i never get tired of it because they passed them during commercial breaks in my region
I'll take an obsession with thumbs over Nickelodeon's foot obsession any day
I found a full boxed DVD set of all the thumb shorts in a closet of my house left by the previous owners. There were 6 shorts in total I'm pretty sure. There's thumb wars, bat thumb, frankenthumb, the godthumb (a take on the godfather) the Blair witch thumb, a take on the Blair witch project, and my personal favorite, thumbtanic- a play on titanic where it gets taken over by a gigantic spider
I would say 2008 started my puppet trauma but then I remember baby Einsteins
holy shit i remember this phase and it's been stored in my mind this whole time like "was that thumb wrestlers show a thing?? was it a short or what??" so i was stoked when i saw your tdi video and you showed the thumbs i was like woww then at the end you mention you made a video all about it and im like stoked!
I feel old the way this is being talked about. I'm only 31, but these thumb films were the best when I was growing up. Everyone I hung out with loved them. Hearing you call them bargain bin parodies stings my little heart. Edit: Awww. Nevermind. You liked it!!
the thumb wrestling one was actually my favorite thing on cartoon network, i looked forward to seeing it every day and i remember putting it over adventure time
That thumb fighting flash game just unlocked so many nostalgic memories
I used to own the book, and read it every morning going to school until the spine wore out, splitting the book in half.
I just wanted to say that your videos have really helped me with my anxiety and sleep issues, something about your style and voice is so charming and calming to me. I hope your channel grows :)
Mentioning the thumb movie unlocked so many memories in my head and so much confusion about what was and was not spoofs, robot chicken, and just some commercials that I never figured out until now, Thanks man
I never forgot TWF and I never will, I was so strongly fixated on it when it was a thing that it actually has an impact to this day on how I make my own characters. I've made characters for stories, roleplays, and game concepts I've yet to do anything with that are on some level based on TWF characters. Also I remember the flash game on the CN website that was basically glorified rock paper scissors was actually weirdly addictive
I'm Brazilian and I watched all the episodes of TWF and it would go by early in the afternoon right at my snack time and the dubbing was very funny
This needs more attention
I have unapologetically loved these movies since I was a kid and I'm so glad to see them finally getting some love. They're hidden gems.
Grew up with all 6 thumb movies on DVD. They hold legendary status in my household. My brother and quote them regularly to this day
I remember seeing the original movies at Hollywood Video on VHS as a kid and being deeply put off by the box art. Had no idea it ever made a comeback on CN.
I was a Thumb poser growing up, I was interested in the wrestling and kept up with the tournament despite not catching a single episode and was morbidly obsessed with the thumb movies despite never watching them because Bat Thumb had a disclaimer saying it wasn’t for children
I... LEGIT thought that I hallucinated Thumb Wars as a kid. I remember it so vividly, but I thought "no way this was real"... well, good to know it was-
I never saw these on CN, but my sister used to rent the Thumb movies on VHS constantly. The image of Darth Vader flipping open their cloak, revealing a pink dress and saying "LOKE, I AM YOUR *MOTHER!* AND NOW, MAMMA IS GOING TO GIVE YOU A LESSON IN MANNERS!" has been burned into my brain because of it lmao
I vaguely remember that from when I was a kid, and mostly just remember being annoyed and slightly unsettled by it.
The red bar at the bottom of the thumbnail got me thinking I already saw this so I ignored it for months bruh
I completely forgot these existed until I saw your thumbnail and it all came back. I thought this was hilarious back then and even now, this is beautiful.
I remember the thumb wrestling thing being called “wrestling thumb federation” but them changing it and I assumed some higher up noticed the “wtf” joke and got mad
You are SUPER underrated, your content is amazing!!
Thank you. This memory has been haunting me for over a decade.
You just unlocked a memory that was buried deep in my soul. I don’t know how to feel remembering this.
omg i still quote the thumb war wrestling thing with my brother to this day and this is the first time someone else even acknowledged it's existence
you unlocked long suppressed memories with frankenthumb
I remember the thumbs from watching Diamond and Pearl. I thought I'd never heard of the thumb wars, but that block brought back some deep memories
this is AWESOME! love the effort and quality, you totally deserve more views! i love the topic and id love to see you cover other similar topics
Thanks for unlocking another part of my memories
This was such a trip. Nobody I’ve talked to remembers this shit so I thought I was just tripping. Thank you my g
I can relate to the searching through schedules, I myself went into a deep dive into the history of the Hub Network awhile back, and one of the things I did was compare the archived schedules from the WayBack Machine to the first and final air dates displayed for each show and movie on the site, Nickandmore, and some of the dates on said site turned out to be inconsistent to what I found on the schedules I salvaged.
I've just found this video recently and I love it! You've clearly done a lot of research into this video, and I especially love all the details you added! I'm definitely subscribing after this! Side note: Cartoon Network did air Thumb Wars several more times around September/October 2009. And there are very few listings for TWF matches on the CN/AS Archives wiki, mostly since there's very little information we could find. Nice video though!
I actually remember seeing Franken-Thumb when it first aired on CN, and laughing so hard.
I'm so glad I got to be a part of this... adventure? This PHASE in Cartoon Network👍
It's shocking how I remember loving TWF as a kid, but forgot it even existed until 2019, forgot about it again a few days later, then here I am remembering it again like it's a drunk memory thanks to this video
oh my god thank u for explaining what the noods are called, i've had this image of their christmas commercial break bit stuck in my head for so long but nobody else seemed to remember it and i had no way of getting the info from google (or i was just not great at googling lol). hAte that they're called "noods," but glad to have their existence reaffirmed
I remember watching these and I loved them. I remember the Frankenstein thumb version and it stuck with me for years after
My favorite times as a kid I remember this phase all to well. Sum of those thumb shows had sum “grown up” humor 💯💯
This original run of thumb movies was in the 90s and I loved them. The Blair Thumb holds up
the thumb wrestling show was genuinely something i care about a lot as a kid
9:18 Wow that must be where Joe (Due who made the dog of wisdom anim) got his iconic *yEeEs*
I'm a bit younger than you and I remember having fond memories of this show, even though I shouldn't. Then it clicked, the Latin American version of cartoon network had reruns of this show. According to this video they did it well into 2013: Tandas Comerciales Cartoon Network Latinoamérica | Febrero 2013 (+ Cortos TWF)
This is the most underrated KZread account of all time
Thanks for mentioning out of Jimmy's head offhandedly, I have had vague memories of that for years and for the life of me I could not remember exactly what it was
I grew up watching the entire thumb movie series as a kid, seeing all this as an adult is W I L D
There’s so much grain in this video you can use it as sandpaper.
i have every thumb movie on dvd like blair thumb or bat-thumb or even thumb wars and seeing this on my for you page really suprised me
The Pokémon DP bumper unlocked a perfectly preserved memory I completely forgot I had
Oh my God you just unlocked a big chunk of my childhood I couldn't remember
I wasn't prepared for the BatThumb voice to be so spot on for Christian Bale, it's uncanny
Bro you have unlocked a big memory 😭
I totally erased the thumb shows from my memory until now
I always remembered the thumb wars being on CBBC in the uk! I always remember watching it while having dinner after school. Good times :)
Man I just knew about Batthumb/Thumbtanic/etc back in my middle school years (think around 2004-05), I didn't have proper cable at this point and didn't realize they took the thumb thing and RAN WITH IT
i remember this because me and my sister had the luchador masks that came in Happy Meals and would use them in thumb wars.
dude ive been waiting till the end of the video to comment... I legit thought this was a fever dream and am relived that this wasnt only me. Ill tell you as a cartoon network kid that your math adds up with 16 and clone wars. Cartoon network went through phases like a child would and the thumb and live action shit was either you were there or weren't;. jimmy's head omfg you were in it. So happy to know I wasn't alone bc what is our lifes; and god bless your younger sister you POS
I remember making sure I would catch TWF three afternoons a week at my nan's as a kid. The size of the space it holds in my memory makes the fact that I could have only seen it for two months (I went swimming every saturday morning so I would have been completely unaware of the crushzone) almost unbelievable.
The thumb wars federation was something I kinda forgot, seeing this made me immediately remember that it existed.
I used to love Thumbwars and Thumbtanic. Your video has convinced me to watch all these films.
Seeing that red and blue slime in the background unlocked a memory for me
Every time there was a pop-up, I just imagined, "Muffalo 14 has started to roam away."
I was obsessed with these thumb parodies on KZread, even before they were aired on TV. Bat-Thumb my FAR my favorite
I remember watching thumb wars, tumbtanic and frankinthumb as a kid, and the thumb wrestling, I actually got a magazine as a kid that had little things you put on your thumb to make it into the characters
I remember thumb wars vividly because of the “I am your mother Joke” my single digit age self loved that joke. The thumb wrestling bit however is definitely unlocking memories for me
Mannnn I loved both the TWF and the Thumb movies as a kid. I do recall that there was a twist that blew my ten year-old mind in the third season of TWF I think, where the villains actually win the finals and there was a genuine cliffhanger I was invested in. I do think it was resolved in the first episode of that next season but still cool for me back then. And I also bought all the Thumb movies as a kid. Genuinely loved those back then even though I did not remember the more “adult” scenes as a kid… Anyways, thanks for this video! Love how similar of a shared intrigue/love that you have with me for this era of cartoons. Those were very formative years for me as I really started to get on the Internet and ended up competing at the Pokémon Worlds stage in 09. Now I’m just rambling so I’ll just end it here okay
I remember there was a tie-in thumb wrestling federation flash game in like 2012-ish. I never played it but i remember being in first or third grade and watching a bunch of the other kids playing it on the computers in the back of class.
Iv never seen the show but the Mexican masked thumb has an iconic design that could be spotted a mile away
bro i remember as a kid playing thumb wars on the cartoon network website. idk why but that shit was actually pretty fun for a CN flash game
Remember Team Smithereen? The show aired on Disney XD alongside "The Secret Life of Suckers" (or "Suckers" for short) and the cast featured Thrill Kat, Whoop, Brave Little Francis and Stunt Pig, who perform crazy and dangerous stunts. It was crazy, honestly. Does anyone else remember seeing this show? I saw this as a young child about years ago
This has to be the underrated channel
