Mean Girls, Wonka, and Other Secret Musicals

Фильм және анимация

What was supposed to be a short detour has turned into nearly an hour of talking about movie musicals. For years we’ve been watching blurry shaky footage of the Mean Girls musical, but now we can actually see it on the big screen. Only issue is… several issues with the film. The biggest of which seems to be the lack of clarity around it being a musical at all. Why is Paramount trying to hide this films musicality? Does it actually hold up? What is the purpose of doing anything? Let’s find out

As a gay I lowkey missed the homophobia in mean girls. Janis seems way less justified in how much she hates Regina now (still understandable, but I feel less angry on her behalf)

This is so intresting because I expected people to have the opposite reaction. In the original Janis is a straight girl that gets accused of being gay and called a dyke. I assumed them making Janis a lesbian that gets outed and repeatedly pubically humilated for being gay by Regina would make people sympathize with her to the point of muddying the message of her also being a mean girl, even without the use of the slur

  • @ouci

    @ouci

@@lilly4836yeah i think janice being a lesbian works better. in the new movie regina also kissed her during spin the bottle and then made fun of her for being gay which would give janice a lot of weird feelings probably. reminds me of in moral orel where stephanie gets kissed by her crush who wants to piss off their teacher and when stephanie catches feelings and confesses she gets laughed at and stuff

this is exactly how i feel. It’s like watered down and if they want it to not be so blatant that it’s bc regina calls janice a lesbian, don’t have the lesbian bit in there at all?? either go all the way or don’t go at all, because it feels like a weakass move on the movie’s part

  • @morganorwhatever

I think the most accurate way to go about the homophobia in this movie would’ve been for them to bully Janis for being butch, not just for being a lesbian. I think most teens know it’s fine to be gay but stereotype jokes are still considered fair game

As a queer guy, i count myself as crazy lucky that i went to a preforming arts high school bc bullying people for being gay or even trans didnt happen that much. Still happened bc it was in utah. But i remember this one girl and her group were really outspoken against gay people and one of them was getting very agro towards a friend of mine (for weeks at this point). i got so fed up that i told her no one likes her except her 3 friends and 2 of them only liked her cuz she was hot and they were dumb jock types so they fell for it. She tried to clap back by calling me the d-word and that the whole school was full of f-slurs or something and i said that she didnt have to here. Its a charter school and she can go to public tomorrow if she hated the school so much. I got called down to the office and the school counselor said i had to apologize bc i guess she cried or whatever. And i said she used slurs towards me and the student body. And the counselor said "shes not a bad person for not liking gay people. Almost everyone in the school system calls us The Gay School but i still work here! In fact I dont like gay people, do you think im a bad person?" And bc im autistic, she used the 'hey lil bud' voice and figured id back down but i said "yes you are a bad person why do you work here" and i got suspended for a day and when my mom found out why, that counselor was mysteriously transfered to a new school and that girl and her crew slowly left over the course of a few weeks bc everyone found out what happened and stop including them socially or working with them on projects. So happy ending there but even at a Gay School (tm), people will still get bullied for it and the bullies will get away with it unless a vitcim has a bad ass super woman tiger mom like mine.

It was so hypocritical how people were complaining that these characters looked like adults and not teens, and that the 2004 ones looked like teens. But if we're being completely honest, Karen and Cady were like the only ones who looked like teenagers in the 2004 movie. Even though they did a good job acting as teens, it was clear that someone like Rachel Mcadams was not a 17 year old junior. So idk why people online were complaining about this casts age, because none of them look out of place in a high school.

Then also acting gay as the jocks did or other inline folk with the Jock or Cholo crowd mocking actual gays but then you're actually LGBT they fucking piss all over you... also something else in school. Second, "if you're not making fun of them you are not with us" mentality" and that "First rule of fight club, don't talk about fight club" BS at my HS they actually (the boys) had their own fight club. It wasn't until summer vayakay at a party (Yes those kinds of parties) I met up with one of the girls that used to attend and mentioned that stuff and she said they girls heard about it from the guys and started their own girls only fight club. I remember being called down to the office for questioning since I was not participating in the fighting, I wore my emotions on my shirt so I'm sure they could tell that sort of thing dealing with kids all the time. Third, the entire BS dating trash we go through only to find out they are worth far too much trouble than what you can put up with. Mommy or worse than normal daddy issues, or dating other guys and using you as a rebound like an arse hole, ignoring the actual "good dating choices" and shit all over us nice guys not one of THOSE but genuine human beings get laughed at while the bad boys end up getting fat and going to jail after High School. I have seen school peers become parents and become parents upon Aunt's or Grandparents in some cases. While life passes them by I just remain the same, unchanging and stubborn in the face of natural forces like a stone in the dirt only being etched by the weathering's of the climate seasonally. Did I mention I also have depression and anger issues, probably not someone you want to come unhinged in a dire situation where the former school bully is now in need of a job or something in the way of "asking for help". Pathetic, help themselves they have before and they will again, they do not need nor desire help, to give it to them is to only make them take advantage of you after. I have seen a "nerd" from the 50's all grown up and now a man taking care of his own property and even letting some people live in his land as a land lord. This guy as a kid had the farmers life taking care of animals and farm land and then would go to school only to come home to finish up the farm work go to bed, get up early milk cows get eggs ect. and the repeat everything the next day. He's not a man to mess with nor call names, and if he could he'd probably run ya through with a log and I am starting to get that way myself, only a bit earlier in my life because it requires adapting.

I haven't seen the movie yet, but I know there's more cameos than just Tina Fey and Lindsay Lohan. The French teacher is Ashley Park, who originated the Gretchen role on Broadway. Also, the principal is the same as every other Mean Girls movie. Edit: I wouldn't read the book Mean Girls is based on. It's actually a self-help book instead of a narrative story, and most of that is explored in the scene where all the girls are held after school.

Finally! Someone who compared the broadway musical and the movie musical. A whole lot of other reviewers just stuck to 2004 MG vs 2024 MG. Very spot on review! They watered down the songs esp Regina's imo but Renée still slayed those notes, just wish they bettered the arrangement. 95% of the tracks in the movie musical just didn't hit (Sexy and World Burn still trumps everything else) and I See Stars was murdered to oblivion and shoved straight to the backrooms.

Disney especially struggles with letting broadway songs stay broadway and not pop, and I'm starting to think this may be a Hollywood issue as well with how they're actively hiding the music in musicals during promotion. Also, side note, but the film was filmed in an actual high school, I think the actors mentioned using abandoned classrooms as dressing rooms, and finding abandoned belongings, because the schools was shut down before its student body even graduated.

47:09 hmm ok I have a theory… A FIL- anyway. So it would be easy to assume that because you play all your characters that this could just be another completely new character just with your voice. But this character directly made notice to a thought that the bhultra we have been following made in this video. so I propose that this- in the cannon that I think I understand (if I don’t this just throws this whole theory out the window) is the Andrew that has been living his life that shares his memories and or his consciousness with the Andrew we’ve been following throughout these videos in this new era of lore -LOOOORE- And he also made note of how that voice sounded familiar. That again could be a bit that’s just like poking at the fact that Andrew plays all the characters, but it could also be hinting at this theory. I also find it very deliberate that we haven’t seen this person’s face so this reveal can still be plausible. But idk that’s just a theory.. A BHULTRA THEORY, thanks for reading

They had lots of friends, were in student council, played sports, were popular. I just graduated in 2020 so I am sure it is even more accepted now. I also dont understand how lesbian is a bad word? Isn’t that a whole letter of the community- it isn’t a bad word, it is a descriptor and one that people of that sexuality call themselves? Why was it being censored?

from what i heard, the logic behind taking out the slur, is that even someone as mean as regina would know that it's not okay. obviously that's not true, i think it has more to do with renee being queer, it made sense for her regina specifically. but honestly not mad at it, i know the world is very homophobic still, but honestly i don't think that's an excuse to not make movies aspirational, media impacts how people act, sure society is still hella homophbic, but if the media is at least not normalizing it like it was not that long ago, it's an improvement imo. but bottoms is the best movie.

Idk I don't think a homophobe watching the movie is going to go "omg even REGINA didn't say dyke....I have to change 🥹"

Hey, no. Gay person here. No. A) america isn't really that homophobic anymore. B) I trust that the audience is mature enough to tell that saying slurs is bad. C) how is it any different from portraying racism or sexism in media? Saying mean things on TV isn't gonna make people say mean things in real life.

@@magentawool2556 everywhere is still that homophobic. i'm in my little gay bubble so i think it's all cool, but my little sister goes to high school, and they still throw around the f-slur and call things gay as a bad thing. we're just more conscious of it now. as for the rest, yeah, sure, i agree w you

I did dislike a lot that the movie was so close up. It felt claustrophobic

Another comment about handling the homophobia and stuff in the movie lol, but just based on my own experience and what I’ve seen, gay/bi/lesbian etc people(generally not trans from what I’ve seen but idk), plus people who aren’t white and exceptionally skinny in general, *can* become stereotypically popular kids, they just have to be willing to let their friend group make jokes at their expense for it and be willing to throw anyone else that’s “too gay” or fat or whatever under the bus. Imo changing it from the d word to smth else makes sense since I’ve never heard the d word actually used, usually people just use the f slur for everyone if they’re looking for smth offensive to say(bear in mind I am a guy so I might’ve just not been around when d*** is used tho), so updating it for accuracy sake makes sense. Though to be fair, toning it down into something less outright hateful probably is nicer for anyone already getting those words used on them and would probably make the movie a more enjoyable experience for them, as long as whatever they toned it down to kept the point of what they were actually bullying Janis for, which they kinda did, but they probably didn’t need to add pyro. Again, this is all my own super subjective experience though, idk any more than anyone else lol :)
