Yeah, in this final duel, they really switched roles. Burr, also the cautious “wait to see how the wind will blow” guy, made a gut reaction to Hamilton wearing his glasses and shot to kill (or at least wound) and Hamilton, more of the “bull in the china shop” kind of politician, made a calculated decision to throw away his shot.

Lin is a genius. "Throwing away your shot" is a term for shooting your gun in the air. So, Hamilton's theme was never hesitating and always being "non-stop". While Burr was the opposite "wait for it". So the one time that Hamilton "threw his shot" it ended up costing him his life.

@@THEBEAST9P Hard to say. Burr never committed his thoughts to paper so everything we know about him is second hand. But was he actually sorry that he ended Hamilton’s life or just sorry that his actions had ruined his own political ambitions?

@@gracievore206 Burr was a pretty shameless opportunist (“The Schyler seat was up for grabs so I took it”). LMM makes it seem as though the Hamilton-Burr duel took place shortly after it was determined that Jefferson would be President and Burr would be Vice President but in reality, Burr spent 4 years “serving” as Vice President first. I put serving in quotes because Thomas Jefferson didn’t trust him any further then he could throw him and gave his VP nothing to do. With the passage of the 12th Amendment to the Constitution and Jefferson free to pick a VP he would prefer, Burr chose to run for Governor of New York and Hamilton intervened again. Now we can all certainly understand Burr being pretty ticked at Hamilton at this point but what I neglected to mention was that Burr was on the ballot for NY Governor AS THE FEDERALIST CANDIDATE. Yeah, you read that right-he had just served as Senator and Vice President as a Democratic-Republican and now he decides to switch parties so he can have a shot at being Governor. Clearly, Burr was loyal to no one but himself at this point. He had no established political principles other then “what will appeal to the people I need to get to vote for me to be elected”.

The line “I imagine death so much it feels more like a memory” is a constant theme throughout the musical. Where Hamilton came from in the Caribbean, many people died very young. He almost died in his mother’s arms as a child when they both got terribly sick, but sadly his mother passed and he survived. So we see images of his mother on the other side throughput the play as well. The staging of everything is done so well, you will love it when you watch.

  • @sinswept

The part "Is it like a beat without a melody" is also a recurring thing. First time he sings it he is young, he is singing and he is backed by drums, so there is both beat and melody. When Philip dies they don't sing the words, but his final moments is backed by just a dying beat and then silence. And then when Hamilton dies he is backed by just silence for his final stanza and he changes the line to "There is no beat, no melody".

This is kinda outta pocket but what makes me unreasonably angry about Burr is when he said “This man will not make an orphan of my daughter.” I get his intentions as a father, and I don’t blame him for not wanting Theodosia to go through what he did as an orphan, but THEODOSIA WAS 22 AND MARRIED AT THE TIME. Hamilton had SEVEN KIDS, like FOUR of them under the age of 13, who needed a father.

Hamilton says the line "I imagine death so much it feels more like a memory" 3 times in the show. The first time is in My Shot, as he thinks of his future for the first time: I imagine death so much it feels more like a memory When's it gonna get me? In my sleep? Seven feet ahead of me? If I see it coming do I run or do I let it be? Is it like a beat, without a melody? [...] The second time is in Yorktown, when he is finaly given a command: I imagine death so much it feels more like a memory This is where it gets me: On my feet, the enemy ahead of me. [...] And the third time in The World Was Wide Enough, as he faces Burr in duel and sees is life flashing before his eyes: I imagine death so much it feels more like a memory Is this where it gets me, on my feet, several feet ahead of me? If I see it coming, do I run or fire my gun or let it be? There is no beat, no melody. [...] Lin is a lyrical genius, so many lines and motifs are used throughout the musical with a different layer of meaning everytime.

The line "I imagine death so much it feels more like a memory" was used earlier in Yorktown, but first came up in My Shot, when he said "I imagine death so much it feels more like a memory / when's it gonna get me? / in my sleep? / seven feet ahead of me? / If I see it coming, do I run or do I let it be? / Is it like a beat without a melody?" And that's why he repeats it, with alterations like "I see it coming, do I run or fire my gun or let it be?", but the most important part is that the first time he sings them, he hasn't been so close to death (like he says in Hurricane, he couldn't seem to die), so he's wondering what it will be like when it does get him, but in this song, he finally has his answer, and it's reflected by how there is no melody to his dying monologue.

Just noticed they also had a heart-beat thing going on with Alexander's death, just like in Philip's death. After the gun-shot and throughout Burr singing what he did after the duel, there're this almost muted percussion thing playing along. I don't have the right terminology lmao, but you hear it playing along with the piano. It stops at the line "Angelica and Eliza were both at his side when he died," which helps keep that idea that Alexander lived long enough to say goodbye to his family.

4:00 The reason it sounds so echoed and that Hamilton is far from the mic is because we are in his thoughts. Around him on stage dance numbers from previous songs are being carried out, visually taking us through Hamilton's life while he prepares to die and sees his life flash before his eyes. His monologue here is supposed to take place in the span of one second as the bullet travels to him. (the bullet is an actual character in the play who is actually trying to cross the stage to Hamilton while he performs his death monologue).

I took a college course freshman year about Hamilton the play and the line that seems misplaced where Burr just says "I get a drink" is meant to sound that out of place because all throughout the play Hamilton and Burr compliment, rhyme with, or harmonize with one another and Burr has suddenly lost that so his line is met with a uncomfortable silence and it seems off balance because Hamilton is gone.

I believe an earlier version of this song had the view before the dual from both Hamilton and Burr's point of view. I def recommend checking out the deleted songs! Also the staging of this song is insane- can't wait for you to see it!

It's hard to say what actually happened at the duel with *complete* accuracy, because the only witnesses were two people who were each on one of the men's sides, but the report is that Alexander put his glasses on to see Burr's face so he could tell if maybe Burr had changed his mind. Also, a bit more factually based, there's the tree branch that was damaged when it was hit with Hamilton's shot. As the song says, Hamilton was a marksman. He had fantastic aim. And yet, the branch that was hit by the bullet was so far away from the target that there's no way a *marksman* could have shot it unless he intended to shoot *away* from his opponent. It's not even certain if he intentionally pulled the trigger, or if it was a reflex reaction when the bullet hit him. Either way, Hamilton could have shot Burr, but he didn't. And of course, Burr shot anyway.

And yeah, they went to the same field in Weehawken, NJ that Philip had his duel. That must have sucked.

Fun fact: Burr wasn't trying to kill Hamilton. He was aiming for the right shoulder just to maim him but he was such a terrible shot he killed him on accident.

It's kind of a big thing between fans when it comes to Burrs reasoning of not wanting his daughter to become an orphan. This is because his daughter is about 21 and already married and if he killed Hamilton he will be leaving Hamiltons four living children with only their mother who no longer has much money as the schuyler fortune had mostly being used up. On the other hand burrs daughter had recently lost her mother to illness.

It's funny how you pause at every detail. When you pause, at least go back 5 seconds, It's annoying because you miss lyrics.
